  • We have prepared organophilic inorganic particles and polyimide (PI) nanocomposite having excellent thermal stability and high dielectric constant that can be used for electronic application such as capacitor. We have chosen barium titanate (BT), a high dielectric constantmaterial and its surface was coated with nylon 6 to improve the affinity with PI. The FT-IR and TEM studies showed that the organophilic inorganic particle (BTN) has a polymer shell with thickness of 5 nm. We have suggested that it is possible to control the thickness of coating surface and also indicated the relationship between the ratio of inside and outside radius of BTN and the weight fraction of BT. The PI nanocomposite films based on poly(amic acid) and BTN were prepared by cyclodehydration reaction. The homogeneous dispersion of BTN in PI matrix was identified by using SEM. We have investigated the effect of BTN content on the coefficient of thermal stability, integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), and dielectric constant of PI nanocomposite films.

  • High-speed melt spinning of syndiotactic polystyrene was carried out using high and low molecular weight polymers, HM s-PS and LM s-PS, at the throughput rates of 3 and 6 g/min. The effect of take-up velocity on the structure and properties of as-spun fibers was investigated. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns of the as-spun fibers revealed that the orientation-induced crystallization started to occur at the take-up velocities of 2-3 km/min. The crystal modification was a-form. Birefringence of as-spun fibers showed negative value, and the absolute value of birefringence increased with an increase in the take-up velocity. The cold crystallization temperature analyzed through the differential scanning calorimetry (OSC) decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity in the low speed region, whereas as the melting temperature increased after the on-set of orientation-induced crystallization. It was found that the fiber structure development proceeded from lower take-up velocities when the spinning conditions of higher molecular weight and lower throughput rate were adopted. The highest tensile modulus of 6.5 GPa was obtained for the fibers prepared at the spinning conditions of LM s-PS, 6 g/min and 5 km/min, whereas the highest tensile strength of 160 MPa was obtained for the HM s-PS fibers at the take-up velocity of 2 km/min. Elongation at break of as-spun fibers showed an abrupt increase, which was regarded as the brittle-ductile transition, in the low speed region, and subsequently decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity. There was a universal relation between the thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers and the birefringence of as-spun fibers when the fibers were still amorphous. The orientation-induced crystallization was found to start when the birefringence reached -0.02. After the starting of the orientation-induced crystallization, thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers with similar level of birefringence varied significantly depending on the processing conditions.

  • A stretchable polymeric membrane shaped diffuser was used to homogenize the coherent laser beam. The developed RGB module was used to focus and defocus test by beam combiners. Average oscillation frequency was set at 180Hz~300Hz and it resulted in the best homogenization effect in visual range. The blue laser module turned out to be the worst case for the transmission and primary reason is believed to be the short length of irradiated laser beam. The developed system removed the speckling and the brightness was decreased by 10 ~ 20% for the RGB laser. Overall the brightness was decreased by 13% and homogenity with respect to the temporal axis was improved from 30fs to 110fs.

  • The objective of this study was to assess the biofouling characteristics of the Bacillus biofilm formed on reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. For the study, a sporogenic Bacillus sp. was isolated from the seawater intake to a RO process, with two distinct sets of experiments performed to grow the Bacillus biofilm on the RO membrane using a lab-scale crossflow membrane test unit. Two operational feds were used, 9 L sterile-filtered seawater and 109 Bacillus cells, with flow rates of 1 L/min, and a constant 800 psi-pressure and pH 7.6. From the results, the membrane with more fouling, in which the observed permeate flux decreased to 33% of its initial value, showed about 10 and 100 times greater extracellular polymeric substances and spoOA genes expressions, respectively, than the those of the less fouled membrane (flux declined to 20% of its initial value). Interestingly; however, the number of culturable Bacillus sp. in the more fouled membrane was about 10 times less than that of the less fouled membrane. This indicated that while the number of Bacillus had less relevance with respect to the extent of biofouling, the activation of the genes of interest, which is initiative of biofilm development, had a more positive effect on biofouling than the mass of an individual Bacillus bacterium.

  • Hot embossing master is indispensable for the fabrication of polymeric optical waveguides using hot embossing technology. Sidewall roughness of silicon master is directly related to optical loss of optical waveguides In this paper, a silicon master was fabricated by using a deep-RIE process. Additionally, thermal oxidation followed by oxide removal was carried out to minimize etched Si sidewall roughness. Thermal oxidation and oxide removal were performed with $H_2O_2$ atmosphere at $1050^{\circ}C$ and $NH_4$F:HF=6:l BOE, respectively, for the oxide thickness of 400$\AA$, 1000$\AA$, 3000$\AA$, 4500$\AA$, 5600$\AA$ and 6200$\AA$. The sidewall roughness was characterized by SEM and SPM-AFH measurements. We found that the roughness was improved from 12nm (RMS) to 6nm (RMS) for the scalloped sidewall and from 162nm (RMS) to 39nm (RMS) for the vertical striation sidewall, respectively.

  • Organic fouling observed in submerged membrane filtration as a pretreatment for seawater desalination increases energy consumption for membrane operation because of requiring frequent chemical cleaning and membrane replacement. In membrane pretreatment for seawater facing with algae blooms, membrane fouling was observed in submerged microfiltration using sodium alginate model compound which is one of the main components of extracellular polymeric substances. Without aeration, aglinate fouling increased with its concentration while aeration reduced the alginate fouling effectively regardless of its concentration tested. In the absence of aeration, alingate fouling tended to be decreased with increasing calcium concentration. However, this effectiveness was reduced by increasing sodium chloride concentration. At high concentration of sodium chloride and calcium similar to the seawater conditions, aeration reduced initial fouling. However, as time progressed, the effect of increased airflow rate on fouling reduction was not significant, implying that optimum airflow rate to control alginate fouling in submerged microfiltration can exist.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymer composites, which are made by combining a continuous fiber that acts as reinforcement and a homogeneous polymeric material that acts as a host, are engineering materials with high strength and stiffness and a lightweight structure. In this study, a shape memory alloy(SMA) reinforced composite actuator is presented. This actuator is used to generate large deformations in single lightweight structures and can be used in applications requiring a high degree of adaptability to various external conditions. The proposed actuator consists of numerous individual laminas of the glass-fiber fabric that are embedded in a polymeric matrix. To characterize its deformation behavior, the composition of the actuator was changed by changing the matrix material and the number of the glass-fiber fabric layers. In addition, current of various magnitudes were applied to each actuator to study the effect of the heating of SMA wires on applying current.

  • The polymeric membrane pH sensor based on HDBA(hexyldibenzylamine) or HDPA(hexyldiphenylamine) as hydrogen ion carrier was prepared and electrochemical characterization for the variation of a temperature and membrane thickness were studied on. The sensor based on HDPA was not responded selectively to hydrogen ion. The sensor based on HDBA was responded linearly to hydrogen ion in the range of pH 2 - pH 10, it showed the fast response time of 30 - 50sec. and Nernstian slope of 53.6mV/pH. The interfering effect on alkali and alkaline earth metal ions of pH sensor were lower than glass pH sensor. There was shown a good reproducibility and stability with the precision of 2 - 4mV (${\pm}0.1mV$).

  • Investigating the properties and durability of high-strength concrete exposed to sulfuric acid attack for the purpose of its application in structures exposed to this acid is of outmost importance. In this research, the resistance and durability of high-strength concrete containing macro-polymeric or steel fibers together with the pozzolans of silica fume or nano-silica against sulfuric acid attack are explored. To accomplish this goal, in total, 108 high-strength concrete specimens were made with 9 different mix designs containing macro-polymeric and steel fibers at the volume fractions of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0%, as well as the pozzolans of silica fume and nano-silica with the replacement levels of 10 and 2%, respectively. After placing the specimens inside a 5% sulfuric acid solution in the periods of 7, 21, and 63 days of immersion, the effect of adding the fibers and pozzolans on the compressive properties, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and weight loss of high-strength concrete was investigated and the respective results were compared with those of the reference specimens. The obtained results suggest the dependency of the resistance and durability loss of high-strength concrete against sulfuric acid attack to the properties of fibers as well as their fraction in concrete volume. Moreover, compared with using nano-silica, using silica fume in the fibrous concrete mix leads to more durable specimens against sulfuric acid attack. Finally, an optimum solution for the design parameters where the crushing load of high-strength fibrous concrete is maximized was found using response surface method (RSM).

  • Rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs) were prepared from polymeric 4.4'-diphenyl-methane diisocyanate (PMDI), polyether polyol, 1,4-butane diol, silicone surfactant, and distilled water. The density of the PUF was decreased from 173.7 to 41.7 kg/㎥ with an increase in distilled water from 0.5 to 3.0 php (parts per hundred polyol by weight), respectively, at the 0 php butane diol. The cell size of the PUF increased from 115 to 258 $mu extrm{m}$ with an increase in the amount of distilled water from 0.5 to 3.0 php, respectively, at the 10 php butane diol. It was found that the compressive strength of the PUF increased with the content of distilled water, at the same density. Out of the study for the surfactant effect on the properties of the PUF, it was observed that the cell site of the PUF decreased from 360 to 146 $mu extrm{m}$ with an increase in the amount of the surfactant from 0 to 0.33 php, respectively, but the tell size did not change significantly when the amount of the surfactant exceeded 0.33 php.
