  • In this research, polymeric anionic surfactants having various molecular weights and acid values were synthesized using a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The CSTR has an advantage of higher production rate and more constant product properties compared to batch and semi-batch reactors. The polymeric surfactants were made using butyl acrylate as a hydrophobic group and acrylic acid as a hydrophilic group. The synthesized polymeric surfactants were ionized with alkali solution and were used as an anionic surfactant. To investigate the properties as a surfactant, the properties of the synthesized surfactant, such as acid value, critical micelle concentration (CMC) and molecular weight, were measured. The results showed that the acid values of the polymeric surfactants were 60 to 380 and a number average molecular weight were 8,000 to 13,000 g/mol. Also, it was found that the CMC was around 0.01 g/ml, which showed similar level values with ordinary surfactant. To prove the performance of the polymeric surfactant, acrylic emulsion PSAs were synthesized using the acquired polymeric surfactant. The results showed that the maximum peel strength of 21.24 N/25mm when acid value was 150 and molecular weight was 8,500 g/mol. The values of peel strength and initial tack of acrylic emulsion PSAs using polymeric surfactant synthesized in this study showed much higher than those of reference PSAs synthesized using ordinary anionic surfactant, SDS (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate) and SDS/TRX (Triton X-100).

  • An environmentally friendly water-based pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) was designed in an attempt to replace the solvent-based adhesive for dry lamination used in flexible food packaging films. Instead of using a low molecular weight surfactant, which may have variable material properties, a high molecular weight dispersant was used for emulsification. A polymeric nano-dispersant (PND) was synthesized using solution polymerization, and it was used as a micelle seed in the surfactant, resulting in the synthesis of a core/shell grafted acrylic adhesive. The shell and core exhibited different $T_g$ values, so that the initial adhesion strength and holding power were complemented by the film's flexibility, which is required to provide good adhesion of thin films. Results showed that the PSA designed in this study using the PND instead of traditional low molecular weight surfactant had adhesive properties applicable to the flexible packaging with appropriate tack.

  • In this study, solubilization experiments of n-octane oil were performed by micellar solutions of polymeric nonionic surfactant Pluronic L64 ($EO_{13}PO_{30}EO_{13}$) at room temperature. A single spherical drop of n-octane was injected into aqueous surfactant solution using an oil drop contacting technique and solubilization rate of n-octane was measured by observing the size of oil drop with time. It was found that solubilization rate was independent of initial oil drop size but inversely proportional to the initial surfactant concentration. These results revealed that solubilization of n-octane oil by L64 micellar solution is controlled by interface-controlled mechanism rather than diffusion-controlled mechanism. Dynamic interfacial tension measurements showed that interfacial tension decreases such as from $2.59{\times}10^{-2}$ to $2.45{\times}10^{-2}$, and further to $2.13{\times}10^{-2}mN/m$ as surfactant concentration increases from 8 to 9 and further to 10 wt% respectively. The equilibration time was also found to decrease slightly with an increase in surfactant concentration. All three systems reached an equilibrium within 7 minutes.

  • In this study, solubilization experiments of n-decane, n-undecane and n-dodecane oil were performed by micellar solutions of polymeric nonionic surfactant Pluronic L64($EO_{13}PO_{30}EO_{13}$) at room temperature. A single spherical drop of hydrocarbon oil was injected into aqueous surfactant solution using an oil drop contacting technique and solubilization rate of hydrocarbon oil was measured by observing the size of oil drop with time. It was shown that solubilization rate decreased with the alkane carbon number(ACN) of the hydrocarbon oil. The solubilization rate was also found to be independent of initial oil dorp size and almost linearly proportional to the initial surfactant concentration. These results revealed that solubilization of n-decane, n-undecane and n-dodecane oils by L64 micellar solution is controlled by interface-controlled mechanism but not by diffusion-controlled mechanism. The equilibrium solubilization capacity(ESC) was measured by a turbidimeter and the result showed that EAC decreased with an increase in ACN but increased with both increases in surfactant concentration and solubilization rate. Dynamic interfacial tension measurements showed that interfacial tension and equilibrium time increased with an increase in ACN of hydrocarbon oil but decreased with an increase in surfactant concentration.

  • In this paper, the effect of surface tension, wettability, flow rate of contaminants with varying surfactant content and frequency of applied voltage on the tracking breakdown of epoxy insulating materials were investigated. As the flow rate of contaminant is increased, the surface resistivity is decreased, and the leakage current is increased, the time to tracking breakdown is decreased. It is found that time to tracking breakdown depends on the surface tension of contaminant, that is difference of wettability And as the frequency of applied voltage is increased, time to tracking breakdown decreased.

  • Molecularly imprinted polymeric microbeads (MIPMs) were prepared by the suspension and modified suspension polymerization methods using D-phenylalanine as the template, methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker, toluene as the porogen, polyvinyl alcohol as the stabilizer, and sodium dodecyl sulfate as the surfactant. The addition of a surfactant to the conventional suspension polymerization mixture decreased the mean particle size of the MIPMs and increased the adsorption selectivity. For the modified suspension polymerization method, the mean particle size of the MIPMs was smaller than the particle size of MIPMs prepared via conventional suspension polymerization. Moreover, the adsorption selectivity improved considerably compared to the adsorption selectivities of MIPs reported previously.

  • Rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs) were prepared from polymeric 4.4'-diphenyl-methane diisocyanate (PMDI), polyether polyol, 1,4-butane diol, silicone surfactant, and distilled water. The density of the PUF was decreased from 173.7 to 41.7 kg/㎥ with an increase in distilled water from 0.5 to 3.0 php (parts per hundred polyol by weight), respectively, at the 0 php butane diol. The cell size of the PUF increased from 115 to 258 $mu extrm{m}$ with an increase in the amount of distilled water from 0.5 to 3.0 php, respectively, at the 10 php butane diol. It was found that the compressive strength of the PUF increased with the content of distilled water, at the same density. Out of the study for the surfactant effect on the properties of the PUF, it was observed that the cell site of the PUF decreased from 360 to 146 $mu extrm{m}$ with an increase in the amount of the surfactant from 0 to 0.33 php, respectively, but the tell size did not change significantly when the amount of the surfactant exceeded 0.33 php.

  • The effects of the surfactant type, i.e., CTAB(cationic), SDS(anionic), and GA(polymeric), on the stability of 0.1 vol.% $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids were investigated. The changes in size and zeta potential of nanoparticles in nanofluids with pH, surfactant concentration, and time were experimentally observed. The nanofluids adding CTAB, which ionizes of the same charge with the bare particle surface, was found to have the best stability regardless of the surfactant concentration, whereas those with SDS became unstable under low surfactant concentration conditions, i.e. lower than the critical micellel concentration(CMC), before the charge reversal occurred. With higher SDS concentration over CMC, they became stable. Gum Arabic, which had been used often to stabilize the nanofluids, was also tested. In result, it was found that the type and concentration of surfactants to add should be selected considering pH and the sign of the bare particle surface charge.

  • Poly-Si is an essential material for floating gate in NAND Flash memory. To fabricate this material within region of floating gate, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is commonly used process for manufacturing NAND flash memory. We use colloidal silica abrasive with alkaline agent, polymeric additive and organic surfactant to obtain high Poly-Si to SiO2 film selectivity and reduce surface defect in Poly-Si CMP. We already studied about the effects of alkaline agent and polymeric additive. But the effect of organic surfactant in Poly-Si CMP is not clearly defined. So we will examine the function of organic surfactant in Poly-Si CMP with concentration separation test. We expect that surface roughness will be improved with the addition of organic surfactant as the case of wafering CMP. Poly-Si wafer are deposited by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) and oxide film are prepared by the method of plasma-enhanced tetra ethyl ortho silicate (PETEOS). The polishing test will be performed by a Strasbaugh 6EC polisher with an IC1000/Suba IV stacked pad and the pad will be conditioned by ex situ diamond disk. And the thickness difference of wafer between before and after polishing test will be measured by Ellipsometer and Nanospec. The roughness of Poly-Si film will be analyzed by atomic force microscope.

  • The polyol was synthesized from soybean oil. Soybean oil was epoxized with peracetic acid, and was reacted with methanol in a sulfuric acid catalyst. OH value of synthesized polyol was 186(mg KOH/g). The polyurethane foam was synthesized with silicon type B-8409 as a surfactant, distilled water as a blowing agent, dimethylcyclohexylamine as a catalyst, and polymeric MDI. The density, the compressive strength, the compressive modulus, and the cell structure of the synthesized foam were investigated. The foam was prepared with changing the mole ratio of MDI, and the amount of water, surfactant, and catalyst. As the MDI index was increased, the density and the compressive property of the foam were increased.
