  • On mixing of 1,3-dehydroadamantane, 1, with electron-deficient vinyl monomers such as acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate in THF at r.t. in the absence of any initiator, the copolymerization spontaneously proceeded to give alternating copolymers in 28-88 % yield. By contrast, no reaction of 1 occurred, when isobutyl vinyl ether or styrene was mixed under the similar conditions. These contrastive results indicate the high electron density of a central s-bond in a strained [3.3.1]propellane derivative, 1. Alternating sequences of the resulting copolymers were characterized by NMR and MALDI-TOF-MS measurements. DSC and TGA measurements revealed the high thermal stability of the alternating copolymers containing bulky and stiff adamantane skeletons.

  • Nanofishing enabled us to stretch a single polymer chain with picking it at its two modified termini using atomic force microscope (AFM). Stress-strain curves obtained to date had been the result on slow pulling events and therefore observed phenomena had been interpreted as quasi-static responses. In this study, we extended the capability of nanofishing to the phenomena far from equilibrium state by giving much faster pulling speeds. We could observe a momental increase entanglement and a successive stress relaxation.

  • Atomic force microscope (AFM) enables us to stretch a single polymer chain by picking it at its two modified termini. Using this method called "nanofishing," we have studied statistical properties of single polymer chains. A force-extention curve obtained for a polystyrene with thiol termini in a cyclohexane showed a good agreement with a worm-like chain (WLC) model, and thus gave microscopic information about entropic elasticity. In this report, the experiments were performed at wide-range temperatures, resulting in wide-range solvent qualities from poor to good solvent condition. The temperature dependence of statistical properties of polystyrene was examined. The coil-strand transformation realized in a poor solvent was also discussed.

  • This paper presents an analysis of thermal stress induced along the interface between a polymeric coating layer and a steel substrate as a result of uniform temperature change. The epoxy layer is assumed to be a linear viscoelastic material and to be theromorheologically simple. The viscoelastic boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The numerical results exhibit relaxation of interface stresses and large stress gradients, which are observed in the vicinity of the free surface. Since the exceedingly large stresses cannot be borne by the polymeric coating layer, local cracking or delamination can occur at the interface corner.

  • This study dealt with the manufacturing process of self-healing microcapsules for damage repair in polymeric composites. The microcapsule was consisted with a DCPD (dicyclopentadiene) as the healing agent and a urea-formaldehyde resin as the wall section. The size distribution of microcapsules were measured by a particle size analyzer using a laser diffraction technique. Thermal stability of microcapsules was investigated by using a TGA under continuous and isothermal heating conditions. According to the results, these microcapsules were verified to be to thermally stable and have a great potential to be applicable for damage repair in polymeric composites.

  • Polymeric foams are excellent energy absorber and have found a wide range of applications especially in the automotive industry. The purpose of the present study is to develop experimental and theoretical methodology to characterize the pressure dependent yield behavior of polymeric foams. For the compression test in a triaxial stress sate a specially designed device was placed in a press machine to produce and control oil pressure. From the experiment results it was observed that the size of Mother circles is changed with mean normal stress in contrast to general metal. Then the Coulomb-Mohr criterion was applied to the data.

  • Polymeric materials are widely used in the electronic industry as a common dielectric material or adhesive. The polymeric layer coated on Si substrate can be subjected to thermal stresses due to difference in thermal expansion coefficients. The mismatch in thermal properties between the polymeric layer and the substrate results in significant residual stresses. In this study, the thermal deformation is measured by a curvature measurement method using laser scanning, and the elastic modulus is calculated by an analytic model.

  • Various aluminum chloride polymeric catalysts have been prepared by the reaction of anhydrous aluminum chloride with styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer bead in the carbon disulfide solvent. The shapes of aluminum chloride polymeric catalysts have been investigated by the use of optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and analysis of atomic absorption and electron microprobe X-ray. The catalytic effect of aluminurn chloride polymeric catalysts in the process of esterification of various organic acids with several aliphatic and aromatic alcohols have been studied.

  • The phosphors of high luminous efficiency for PDP application must have high purity, single phase, and dense surface. In this work, the polymeric reaction was applied to preparation of spherical phosphor by aerosol pyrolysis in order to enhance mechanical and optical characteristics. The red phosphor of (Y,Gd)$BO_3$:Eu was prepared from polymeric precursor, in which citric acid and ethylene glycol were used as ion carriers, i.e monomers. For enhancing the luminescence intensity and mechanical characteristics. optimum synthesizing condition were investigated through concentration of monomers, synthetic temperature. doped activator concentrations, and annealing process. The phosphors synthesized with monomers showed quite different morphology from those without monomers. It was observed that polymeric precursor made an effect on particle formation mechanism and status of particles surface. The resultant spherical phosphors show the comparable luminescent properties to the commercial product (product by Nichia co.). Also, they were observed to have the rigid surface.

  • We report highly efficient phosphorescent-dye-doped polymeric light-emitting devices. The devices consist of a polymeric light-emitting layer comprising the phosphorescent dye, host, and matrix polymers. We patterned the phosphorescent-dye-doped polymeric layer with the LITI technique. The devices showed high efficiencies and good pattern quality to adapt to the development of full-color electroluminescent (EL) devices.
