In the present study, chopped henequen natural fibers without and with surface modification by electron beam (E-beam) treatment were incorporated into a polypropylene matrix. Prior to composite fabrication, a bundle of raw henequen fibers were treated at various E-beam intensities from 10 kGy to 500 kGy. The effect of E-beam intensity on the interfacial, mechanical and thermal properties of randomly oriented henequen/polypropylene composites with the fiber contents of 40 vol% was investigated focusing on the interfacial shear strength, flexural and tensile properties, dynamic mechanical properties, thermal stability, and fracture behavior. Each characteristic of the material strongly depended on the E-beam intensity irradiated, showing an increasing or decreasing effect. The present study demonstrates that henequen fiber surfaces can be modified successfully with an appropriate dosage of electron beam and use of a low E-beam intensity of 10 kGy results in the improvement of the interfacial properties, flexural properties, tensile properties, dynamic mechanical properties and thermal stability of henequen/polypropylene composites.
Magnesium oxide (MgO) reinforced polyamide-66 (PA66) composites were prepared through melt-compounding method in order to determine the possibility of using MgO particle as conductive filler in the polymer-based composite. The effects of MgO filler content on the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties for the PA66/MgO composites were investigated. The results showed that the addition of MgO filler to the PA66 matrix led to a large increase in thermal conductivity of the PA66/MgO composites. Tensile strengths of the PA66/MgO composites were slightly decreased as MgO filler loading increased. However, flexural strength and flexural modulus were improved with increasing filler loading. Notched Izod impact strengths were dramatically lowered by the addition of MgO filler.
To manufacture a carbon/carbon composite the coal tar pitch was used as the matrix precursor and the PAN (polyacrylonitrile)-based carbon fiber was used as the reinforcing material to weave 3-directional preform. For pressure carbonization HIP equipment was used to produce a maximum temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$ and a maximum pressure of 100 MPa. The carbonization was induced by altering the dwell temperature between $250^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$, which is an ideal temperature for the moderate growth of the mesophase nucleus that forms within the molten pitch during the pressure carbonization process. The application of high pressure during the carbonization process inhibits the mesophase growth and leads to the formation of spherical carbon particles that are approximately 30 nm in size. Most particles were spherical, but some particles were irregularly shaped. The spread of the carbon particles was larger on the surface of the carbon fiber than in the interior of the matrix pocket.
Delamination crack detection is very important for improving the structural reliability of laminated composite structures. This requires real-time delamination detection technologies. For composite laminates that are reinforced with carbon fiber, an electrical potential method uses carbon fiber for reinforcements and sensors at the same time. The use of carbon fiber for sensors does not need to consider the strength reduction of smart structures induced by imbedding sensors into the structures. With carbon fiber reinforced (CF/) epoxy matrix composites, it had been proved that the delamination crack was detected experimentally. In the present study, therefore, similar experiments were conducted to prove the applicability of the method for delamination crack detection of CF/polyetherethereketone matrix composite laminates. Mode I and mode II delamination tests with artificial cracks were conducted, and three point bending tests without artificial cracks were conducted. This study experimentally proves the applicability of the method for detection of delamination cracks. CF/polyetherethereketone material has strong electric resistance anisotropy. For CF/polyetherethereketone matrix composites, a carbon fiber network is constructed, and the network is broken by propagation of delamination cracks. This causes a change in the electric resistance of CF/polyetherethereketone matrix composites. Using three point bending specimens, delamination cracks generated without artificial initial cracks is proved to be detectable using the electric potential method: This method successfully detected delamination cracks.
Polymeric positive temperature coefficient(PTC) composites have been prepared by incorporating carbon black(CB) into high density polyethylene(HDPE), polyphenylene sulfide(PPS) and polybutylene terephthalate(PBT) matrices. A PTC effect was observed in the composite, caused by the large thermal expansion due to He consecutive melting of HDPE, PPS and PBT crystallites. This theory is based upon the premise that the PTC phenomenon is due to a critical separation distance between carbon particles in the polymer matrix at the higher temperature. The influence of PTC characteristics of the PPS/CB composite can be explained by DSC result. HDPE, one of prepared composition, exhibit the higher performance PTC behavior that decreaseing of negative temperature coefficient(NTC) effect and improved reproducibility by chemically crosslinking. Also, PBT/CB and PPS/CB composites exhibit the higher PTC peack temperature than HDPE/CB PTC composite, individually $200^{\circ}C$ and $230^{\circ}C$. These PTC composite put to good use in a number of safety application, such as self$.$controlled heater, over-current protectors, auto resettable switch, high temperature proctection sensor, etc.
Porosity in polymer matrix composites increases rapidly during thermochemical decomposition at high temperatures. The generation of pores reduces elastic moduli and failure strengths of composite materials, and gas pressures in internal pores influence thermomechanical behaviors. In this paper, micromechanical finite element analysis is carried out by using two-dimensional representative volume elements for unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composites with porous matrix. According to the state of the pores, effective elastic moduli, poroelastic parameters and failure strengths of the overall composites are investigated in detail. In particular, it is confirmed that the failure strengths in the transvers and through-thickness directions are predicted much more weakly than the strength of nonpored matrix, and decrease consistently as the porosity of matrix increases.

In this study, the piezoelectric ceramics PZT powder was synthesized by Wet-Dry combination method. And the flexible 1-3-0 type composites were fabricated with piezoceramic PZT and Eccogel polymer matrix embedded 3rd phase. Dielectric constant of 1-3-0 type composites was lower than that of single phase PZT ceramics. Thickness mode coupling factor k/sub t/ which was comparable with single phase PZT ceramics and mechanical quality factor Qm were about 0.65 and 6, respectively. These composites are considered as a good candidates for broad-band type transducer applications. The acoustic impedance of 1-3-0 type composites was lower than that of single phase PZT ceramics. Therefore, these composites would be better used for hydrophone applications.

The contact resistivity was correlated with IFSS and microfailure modes in conductive fiber/cement composites electro-pullout and AE. As IFSS increased, the number of AE signals increased and the contact resistivity increased latter to the infinity. In dual matrix composite (DMC) test and AE, the number of signals with high amplitude and energy in g]ass fiber composite is significantly larger than that of no-fiber composite. Many vertical and diagonal cracks were observed in glass fiber and no-fiber composite under tensile test, respectively. Electro-micromechanical technique and AE can be used efficiently for sensitive nondestructive (NDT) evaluation and to detect microfailure mechanisms in various conductive fibers reinforced brittle and nontransparent cement composites.

We investigated the tribochemical and wear properties of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) based polymer matrix composites with nanoceramic (NC) ${\beta}$-sialon, and $Al_2O_3$ particles for the mechanical seal applications at low temperature. SEM showed that NC particles were homogeneously distributed in the polymer matrix and initiated the formation of the supramolecular spherulites around NC. From the temperature stimulated depolarization (TSD) current results, it was analyzed that the surface charge on nanoceramic affected the formation of the spherulites structure. 2 wt % $Al_2O_3$ NC did not degrade the mechanical properties of PTFE so that composites showed the similar values of tensile strength, elongation at the rupture and friction coefficient as those of neat PTFE. However, the composite with 2 wt % $Al_2O_3$ NC revealed the improved wear resistance, wear rate of 0.4-1.2 mg/h at room temperature and 0.28 mg/h at $-40^{\circ}C$, respectively, while the neat PTFE the 70-75 mg/h at room temperature and 70.3 mg/h at $-40^{\circ}C$.

Polymer composite are increasingly considered as structural components for use in civil engineering, on account of their enhanced strength-to-weight ratios. Unsaturated polyester (UP) resin have been widely used for the matrix of composites such as FRP and polymer composite, due to its excellent adhesive. Polymer nanocomposites are new class of composites derived from the nano scale inorganic particles with dimensions typically in the range of 1 to 1000 nm that are dispersed in the polymer matrix homogeneously. Owing to the high aspect ratio of the fillers, mechanical, thermal, flame, retardant and barrier properties are enhanced without significant loss of clarity, toughness or impact strength. To prepare the MMT (Montmorillonite)-UP exfoliated nanocomposites, UP was mixed with MMT at $60^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours by using pan mixer. XRD (X-ray diffraction) pattern of the composites and TEM (Transmission Electron Micrographs) showed that the interlayer spacing of the modified MMT were exfoliated in polymer matrix. The mechanical properties also supported these findings, since in general, tensile strength, modulus with modified MMT were higher than those of the composites with unmodified MMT. The thermal stability of MMT-UP nanocomposite is better than that of pure UP, and its glass transition temperature is higher than that of pure UP. The polymer concrete made with MMT-UP nanocomposite has better mechanical properties than of pure UP. Therefore, it is suggested that strength and elastic modulus of polymer concrete was found to be positively tensile strength and tensile modulus of the MMT-UP nanocomposites.
