We have fabricated a polymeric waveguide by using a hot embossing technique and have investigated its propagation loss. The replication of waveguide channels through the use of a hot embossing technique is of interest as a single-step process that could deliver surface roughnesses far smaller than the wavelength. We have evaluated experimentally that the sidewall roughness has a dominant effect on insertion losses of the multimode polymeric waveguide. The propagation loss of the waveguide decreased dramatically upon decreasing the sidewall roughness of the channel. We have confirmed that the preparation of waveguides having nanometer-scale sidewall roughness and 0.1 dB/cm propagation loss is possible when using the hot embossing technique.

We report experimental results demonstrating a novel metal defined polymer optical waveguide with a low loss in electro-optic polymers for the first time. The polymer optical waveguides are created using a metal film on the top of upper cladding without any conventional etching process. The fabricated waveguides have an excellent lateral optical mode confinement at both 1.31 ${\square}m$ and 1.55 ${\square}m$ wavelength, resulting in a fiber-to lens optical insertion loss of ~ 7 dB at 1.55 ${\square}m$ and ~4.5 dB at 1.31 ${\square}m$ wavelength in a 3.5cm total length for TM polarizations, respectively. We also present the optical loss dependence of the waveguide as a function of optical wavelengths. These results may be used in the complex design of integrated polymer optical circuits that need simpler and cheaper fabrication process.

Latest developments on hybrid nanostructured materials fabricated by applying self-assembly strategies on organic/inorganic nanotemplates are discussed. Within this frame, numerous functional nanomaterials including arrays of composite metal/semiconductor nanoparticles, planar waveguides and functional multilayer thin films are generated using self-assembled polymers as templates or building blocks. In particular, surface plasmon resonance based optical sensing is employed to investigate nanofabrication processes occurring in nanoscale dimention. We also suggest unprecedented pathways to hybrid supramolecular multilayer nanoarchitectures in 1D or 2D geometry via layer-by-layer self-assembly.
Polymeric multi-mode optical waveguides were fabricated for parallel optical interconnection. Waveguide structures were molded by a Ni mold master using a hot embossing technique. The Ni mold master was manufactured by LIGA process. Multimode optical waveguides with a 48$\times$47 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$cross-section were produced by a simple two-step process. The propagation losses of the multimode waveguide measured at 0.85 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 1.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ wavelengths were 0.38 dB/cm and 0.66 dB/cm, respectively.
By incorporating large core polymer waveguides, which have been developed for increased alignment tolerance in passive fiber attachment, highly efficient variable optical attenuators are proposed. In order to find optimum device structures, 3-dimensional beam propagation method (BPM) simulations are performed. Heat distribution over the polymer film is calculated to find the 3-dimensional index profile data for the BPM simulation. Due to the small index contrast between the core and cladding materials in the large core waveguide, heat-induced radiation occurs for small heating power. While the ordinary VOA needs the temperature to change over $150^{\circ}C$ for 20 dB attenuation, the large core VOA requires only $70^{\circ}C$. In addition to the merit of passive fiber attachment, the proposed VOA has enhanced attenuation efficiency for the lower temperature change.

Laser direct writing process is developed 3rd harmonic Diode Pumped Solid State Laser with the near visible wavelength of 355 m sensitive polymer is irradiated by UV laser and developed using polymer solvent to obtain quasi-3D. It is important to reduce line width for image mode waveguides, so some investigations will be carried out in various conditions of process parameters such as laser power, writing speed, laser focus and optical properties of polymer. This process could be to fabricate a single mode waveguide without expensive mask projection method. Experimentally, the patterns of trapezoidal shape were manufactured into dimension of 8.4 mm width and 7.5 mm height. Propagation loss of straight waveguide measured 3 dB/cm at 1,550 nm.
In this paper we proposed a new Bragg grating waveguide in order to improve reflectivity and to achieve compactness. Bragg gratings with various thicknesses were engraved in the middle of the core layer with a length of 3 mm. For the sake of cost-effectiveness, the $3^{rd}$ order Bragg grating waveguides were fabricated via conventional photolithography. The maximum reflectivities for the fixed width waveguide of $6{\mu}m$ with the 0.1 and $0.3{\mu}m$-thick Bragg gratings were, -13.14 and -6.25 dB, respectively, and the Bragg wavelengths were 1562.28, 1564.10 nm, respectively. A slight increase in the Bragg grating thickness can result in a remarkable reduction in the length of the Bragg grating waveguide with a fixed reflectivity.
The fabrication of silicon nano-master with pillar structures using E-beam lithography and ICP etching was investigated for application of 2-dimensional polymer photonic crystal waveguides with air hole structures. Pillar structures with square, hexagon, dodecagon and circle were successfully fabricated. The diameters and structures of fabricated pillars were measured by CD-SEM and SPM-AFM. It was found that the optimal dose for complete circle pillar structures was 432 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$.
Hot embossing master is indispensable for the fabrication of polymeric optical waveguides using hot embossing technology. Sidewall roughness of silicon master is directly related to optical loss of optical waveguides In this paper, a silicon master was fabricated by using a deep-RIE process. Additionally, thermal oxidation followed by oxide removal was carried out to minimize etched Si sidewall roughness. Thermal oxidation and oxide removal were performed with $H_2O_2$ atmosphere at $1050^{\circ}C$ and $NH_4$F:HF=6:l BOE, respectively, for the oxide thickness of 400$\AA$, 1000$\AA$, 3000$\AA$, 4500$\AA$, 5600$\AA$ and 6200$\AA$. The sidewall roughness was characterized by SEM and SPM-AFH measurements. We found that the roughness was improved from 12nm (RMS) to 6nm (RMS) for the scalloped sidewall and from 162nm (RMS) to 39nm (RMS) for the vertical striation sidewall, respectively.
