  • Degradation of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) that is facilitated by on/off cycles is one of the most important issues for commercialization of fuel cell vehicles. When a PEMFC stack is shut down, residual hydrogen and induce high voltage equivalent to open circuit voltage to the cathode side that might cause sintering of Pt catalyst and facilitate formation of hydrogen peroxide at the anode side that might decompose $Nafionc\'{A}$ membrane. In this study, degradation of PEMFC exposed to repetitive on/off cycles was investigated by measuring i-V characteristics, ac impedance, cyclic voltammograms, gas leak, cross-sectional SEM images, and TEM images. To prevent degradation of PEMFC caused by the residual gases, hydrogen was removed from anode gas channel by gas-purging and by using a dummy resistance, that were found to be a very effective method.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally research the effects of polymer additives on turbulent transition of Couette flow between concentric cylinders when outer one is rotating and inner one is at rest; the diameter ratio being 0.2. Aqueous polymer solution generate the degradation phenomena in machine forming work, but this is not effected in about 10 minute at 5ppm. aqueous polymer solution testing. The Reynolds number, referred to the gap distance and rotation velocity of the outer cylinder, of turbulent transition is about 20000 for water flow. In the laminer region, the torque value is as same as theoretical one in the region of low Reynolds number, but becomes high with an increase in the Reynolds number. The polymer additives reduce the Reynolds number for turbulent transtition. In the turbulent region, the torque is remarkably reduced by the polymer additives, soluble polymer take down effect of turbulent transition boundary torque.

  • Paralleled with the development of new materials we need to develop methods and techniques to reveal the environmental interaction and impact of the new materials. Small changes in the chemical structure or product formulation may render the product less environmentally adaptable. Degradation products formed from PLLA were identified after aging in different environments and their assimilation in the biotic environment was shown. Green and degradable hydrogels could be designed from renewable hemicelluloses and lactic acid. Hemicelluloses are a renewable and highly interesting raw material source for new green polymers.

  • We show that thermal rearrangement of glassy polymers below the thermal degradation temperature can create unexpected and large microvoids in the membranes, leading to unexpected high gas permeability with high gas selectivity. These current polymer membranes display unexpected gas permeation-separation performance. There are above the upper-bound for conventional polymer membranes for several gas pairs. In the present study, molecular simulation, BET sorption, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), and gas separation experiments were performed to characterize the unusual structure-property relationship of these rigid glassy polymer membranes.

  • Experimental investigation of drag reduction by adding a polymer additive(polyacrylamid, N-401P) into water is carried out in a Circular Water Channel. The effect of viscosity, surface roughness and degradation as a function of running time is also measured with varying the concentration of polymer additives(20ppm,100ppm) and Reynolds numbers. Near and far wakes past a circular cylinder are observed by LDV. Drag forces are measured with a strain-gaged device. The experimental results show that around 5%-30% of drag reduction with the polymer solution are observed. The larger effects of drag reduction can be found at low range of Reynolds number, more roughened surface cylinder. The effect of polymer solution for near wakes is larger than for far wakes.

  • The drag reduction is the phenomenon that occurs only when the shear stress from the wall of pipe is beyond the critical point. The drag reduction increase as the molecular weight, concentration of the polymer and Reynolds number increase, but it is limited by Virk's maximum drag reduction asymptote. Because of the strong shear force for the polymer on the turbulent flow, the molecular weight and the drag reduction do not decrease. Such mechanical degradation of the polymer occurs in all polymer solvent systems. This paper is to identify and develop high performance polymer additives for fluid transportations with the benefits of turbulent drag reduction. In addition, drag reduction in vertical flow by measuring the pressure drop and local void fraction on vertical-up flow of close system is evaluated.

  • Aspheric polymer lens fabrication using isothermal compression molding is presented in this paper. Due to increasing definition of an image sensor, higher precision is required by a lens which can be used as a part of an imageforming optical module. Injection molding is a factory standard method for a polymer optical lens. But achievable precision using injection molding has a formidable limitation due to the machining of complex mold structure and melting and cooling down a polymer melt under high pressure condition during forming process. To overcome the precision requirement and limitation using injection molding method, isothermal compression molding is applied to fabrication of a polymer optical lens. The fabrication condition is determined by numerical simulations of temperature distribution and given material properties. Under the found condition, the lens having a high precision can successfully be reproduced and does not show birefringence which results often in optical degradation.

  • Dilute polymer solutions were injected into turbulent pipe flow of a Newtonian fluid. The local drag reduction for injection of polymer solution at the pipe wall was larger than that at centerline. From the above result we may conclude that the polymer additives were found to influence the flow in the neighborhood of the wall. The effects of the injection apparatus on the local drag reduction are small compared to the drag-reducing effects. The extent of drag reduction increased with polymer concentration and injection flow rate, and the maximum drag reduction obtained were 47% for Polyox Coagulant and 35% for Separan AP-273. In respect to polymer degradation, the polyacrylamide showed better shear stability than the polyethyleneoxide and thus the former expected to have a sharper molecular weight distribution.

  • Recently, polymer insulators that are used for high voltage applications have some advantages such as light weight, small size, vandalism resistance, hydrophobicity and easy making process. During outdoor service of polymer insulators, the surface of the insulating material is frequently subjected to moisture and contamination that lead to dry band arcing. Their tracking resistance, erosion resistance, end sealing and shed design are very important because dry band arcing causes degradation of polymer surface. In this paper, the tracking property of polymer suspension insulator for power transmission is investigated with CEA tracking wheel test. The diagnosis of insulator sample in tracking test has been analyzed by leakage current, STRI Guide, SEM, FTIR and thermal image.

  • In this study, we prepared and evaluated a series of biocompatible and biodegradable block copolymer hydrogels with a delayed swelling property for tissue expander application. The hydrogels were synthesized via a radical crosslinking reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) diacrylate and poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA-PEG-PLGA) triblock copolymer diacrylate as a swelling/degradation controller (SDC). For the synthesis of various SDCs that can lead to different degradation and swelling properties, various PLGA-PEG-PLGA triblock copolymers with different LA/GA ratios and different PLGA block lengths were synthesized and modified to have terminal acrylate groups. The resultant hydrogels were flexible and elastic even in the dry state. The in vitro degradation tests showed that the delayed swelling properties of the hydrogels could be modulated by varying the chemical composition of the biodegradable crosslinker (SDC) and the block ratio of SDC/PEG. The histopathologic observation after implantation of hydrogels in mice was performed and evaluated by macrography and microscopy. Any significant inflammation or necrosis was not observed in the implanted tissues. Due to their biocompatibility, elasticity, sufficient swelling pressure, delayed swelling and controllable degradability, the hydrogels could be useful for tissue expansion and other biomedical applications.
