  • Over the past years, a large number of acrylate polymers have been developed and the overcoat thin layer containing acrylate polymers have been used for TFT-LCD color filter. As forming thin layer using acrylate polymers, the existing acrylate polymers have some problems such as low hardness by low Tg temperature, coating uniformity and solubility in organic solvent. To solve these problems, we synthesized new polymer(Scheme.), containing olefin monomer, which has high Tg temperature, good coating uniformity and good solubility in organic solvent. The overcoat thin layer containing new polymer resulted in good coating uniformity, stain, spot, scratch, heat resistance, DOP(Degree Of Planarization) on RGB glass, transparency, hardness, adhesion, anti-chemicals(anti-acid, anti-base, anti-organic solvent), insulation and anti-humidity. Scheme. The structure of new polymer X = Olefin monomer contains ketone, ester, hydroxy, ether, halogen, nitrile, alkoxy, phenyl functional group $R_1$ and $R_2$= H or $CH_3$. Ratio=0<[1/(1+m+n)]<0.7,0.1[$\leq$[n/(1+m+n)]<0.5.

  • Unsized AS-4 carbon fibers were etched by RF plasma and then coated via plasma polymerization in order to enhance adhesion to vinyl ester resin. The gases utilized for the plasma etching were Ar, $N_2 and O_2$, while the monomers used for the plasma polymerization coating were acetylene, butadiene and acrylonitrile. The conditions for the plasma etching and the plasma polymerization were optimized by measuring interfacial adhesion with vinyl ester resin via micro-droplet tests. Among the treatment conditions, the combination of Ar plasma etching and acetylene plasma polymerization provided greatly improved interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of 69MPa compared to 43MPa with as-received carbon fiber. Based on the SEM analysis of failure surface and load-displacement curve, it was assume that the failure might be occurred at the carbon fiber and plasma polymer coating. The plasma etched and plasma polymer coated carbon fibers were subjected to analysis with SEM, XPS, FT-IR or Alpha-Step, and dynamic contact angles and tensile strengths were also evaluated. Plasma polymer coatings did not change tensile strength and surface roughness of fibers, but decreased water contact angle except butadiene plasma polymer coating, possibly owing to the functional groups introduced, as evidenced by FT-IR and XPS.

  • In addition to the basic properties of the base and top coating agents, corrosion resistance of non-chrome magni 565 coating and characteristics of coating film when coated to steel substrate were studied. The system had a good wettability at room temperature. Moreover, both the contact angle and surface tension were affected little by the viscosity of coating agent and surface roughness of the steel substrate. And the samples coated with optimal conditions showed a great corrosion resistance in salt spray test with 1500 hours or longer of initial appearance time of rust. The coating film was composed of overlapping layer of zinc and aluminium flakes, and the thickness of base coat increased with an increase of base coat viscosity. Based on the C-F peaks of 1,1-Difluoroethaen homo-polymer, it was thought that the base coat was an inorganic polymer bond layer. Meanwhile, the top coat showed C-F peaks of polytetrafluoroethylene with C-H peaks of phenol in FT-IR analysis. From the lower weight loss of base coat in TG analysis, it was thought that cross linking density of base coat was larger than that of top coat. It was thought that the small exothermic reactions observed in DSC curves were due to the thermosetting resins contained in the coating agents. Compared to the non-coated specimen, the coated sample showed more higher polarization resistance and corrosion potential with lower corrosion current density.

  • 3-Roll coating process as a key application technology for manufacturing automotive pre-painted metal-sheets has been studied. The 3-Roll coating system for this study consists of pick-up roll for picking up and distributing coating liquid from the reservoir, metering roll to properly meter coating liquid in metering gap regime, and applicator roll for directly transferring liquid into metal-sheet surface. Flow dynamics and operable coating windows of a polymeric paint (primer) with shear-thinning rheological property have been correlated with processing parameters such as speed ratio and metering gap between pick-up and metering rolls. In the uniform coating regime, dry coating thickness increased with increasing metering gap or decreasing speed ratio. Ribbing and cascade instabilities were observed in low speed and high speed ratio conditions, respectively. It is revealed that lower speed ratio makes severity and wavelength of the ribbing increase, aggravating flow instability in coating systems.

  • The ceramic coatings on metallic materials have attracted by many researchers due to the chemical inertness of ceramic materials. In such aspect, SiOC is a promising material tobe used as protective coating layer on metallic materials due to its outstanding thermal stability and chemical inertness. In this research, SiOC coating was carried out onto SuS-316 substrate using Cl free preceramic polymers such aspolyphenylcarbosilane. 20% of polymethylphenylsilane in cyclohexane solution was coated onto metal surface by dip coating method. Thermal oxidation was carried out at $200^{\circ}C$ for crosslink of the preceramic polymer and the sample was pyrolysized at $800^{\circ}C$ under argon to convert the preceramic polymer to amorphous SiOCx state. The microstructure of the SiOCx film after pyrolysis was investigated using FE-SEM. Corrosion resistance of SiOC coated SuS-316 substrate has been investigated using 5% HCl solution at 25, 40, 60 and $80^{\circ}C$ for 7days. The data revealed that the corrosion resistance increased with SiOC coating on SuS-316 substrate.

  • We herein report on polymer phosphorescent light-emitting devices doped with iridium complex. The emitting layer of poly(N-vinylcabazole) and tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium was fabricated by low speed dip-coating of 10, $20{\mu}m$/s. The devices showed stable current increasing leakage current at turn-on voltage. Compared to conventional spin-coating based organic light-emitting devices, the driving voltage by dip-coating observed lower values of 5.8 and 6.7 V at the luminance of 100 Cd/$cm^2$.

  • This paper examines the blood chamber of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) under static loading conditions and standard operating temperatures. The LVAD's walls are made of a temperature-sensitive polymer (ChronoFlex C 55D) and are covered with a titanium nitride (TiN) nano-coating (deposited by laser ablation) to improve their haemocompatibility. A loss of cohesion may be observed near the coating-substrate boundary. Therefore, a micro-scale stress-strain analysis of the multilayered blood chamber was conducted with FE (finite element) code. The multi-scale model included a macro-model of the LVAD's blood chamber and a micro-model of the TiN coating. The theories of non-linear elasticity and elasto-plasticity were applied. The formulated problems were solved with a finite element method. The micro-scale problem was solved for a representative volume element (RVE). This micro-model accounted for the residual stress, a material model of the TiN coating, the stress results under loading pressures, the thickness of the TiN coating and the wave parameters of the TiN surface. The numerical results (displacements and strains) were experimentally validated using digital image correlation (DIC) during static blood pressure deformations. The maximum strain and stress were determined at static pressure steps in a macro-scale FE simulation. The strain and stress were also computed at the same loading conditions in a micro-scale FE simulation.

  • Polyimide (PI) multilayer thin films were prepared by spin-coating from a poly(amic acid) (PAA) and poly(amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAS). PI was prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) PAA. Different compositions of PAAS were prepared by incorporating triethylamine (TEA) into PMDA-ODA PAA in dimethylacetamide. PI multilayer thin films were spin-coated from PMDA-ODA PAA and PAAS. The PAAS comprising cationic and anionic moieties were spherical with a particle size of $20{\sim}40\;nm$. Some particles showed layers with ammonium salts, despite poor ordering. Too much salt obstructed the interaction between the polymer chains and caused phase separation. A small amount of salt did not affect the interactions of the interlayer structure but did interrupt the stacking between chains. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the average decomposition temperature of the thin films was $611^{\circ}C$. All the films showed almost single-step, thermal decomposition behavior. The nanostructure of the multilayer thin films was confirmed by X -ray reflectivity (XRR). The LF 43 film, which was prepared with a 4:3 molar ratio of PMDA and ODA, was comprised of uniformly spherical PAAS particles that influenced the nanostructure of the interlayer by increasing the interaction forces. This result was supported by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) data. It was concluded that the relationship between the uniformity of the PAAS particle shapes and the interaction between the layers affected the optical and thermal properties of PI layered films.
