  • Adhesion of Cu/Cr and Cu/$Cu_xCr_{1-x}$ thin films onto polyimide substrates has been studied. For an adhesion layer, Cr or Cu-Cr alloy films were deposited onto polyimide using DC magnetron sputtering machine. Then Cu was sputter-deposited and finally, Cu was electroplated. Adhesion was evaluated using $90^{\circ}C$ peel test or T-peel test. Plastic deformation of the peeled metal layer was qualitatively measured using XRD technique. It is confirmed that high interfacial fracture energy and large plastic deformation are important to enhance the peel adhesion strength. High peel strength is obtained when the interface is strongly bonded. More ductile film has higher peel strength. In Cu-Cr alloy films, opposite effects of the Cr addition in the alloy film on the peel strength are operative: a beneficial effect of strong interfacial bonding and a negative effect of smaller plastic deformation.

  • Polarized ultraviolet irradiation techniques have been developed recently to produce alignment of liquid crystals (LC). Because of the excellent thermal stability and the alignment ablility of polyimides, polyimides has attracted considerable research interest for the photoinduced alignment layer. Hasegawa and Taira confirmed homogeneous alignment of LC by the decompostion of a polyimide induced by lineraly ultra-violet polarized light. It was reported that ultraviolet visible absorption spectra of a polyimide alignment film showed a remarkable change upon irradiation. In this study, we synthesized phthalic polyimide and a naphthalenic polyimide in order to investigate the effect of the polyimide structure. Some difference in terms of the photo-induced molecular orientaion of liquid crystals were observed with the polyimide structure.

  • Ultrathin film of polyamic acid having benzene and sulfonyloxyimide moieties was prepared using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, and then photosensitive polyimide LB film was obtained by the thermal treatment of precursor polyamic acid multilayers at 200$\^{C}$ for 1 hr. The polyamic acid was synthesized by condensation polymerization under THF and pyridine cosolvent. All monomers and polymers were identified through elemental analysis, FT-IR and $^1$H-NMR spectroscopic measurements. The microarray patterning of photosensitive polyimide LB film on a gold substrate was generated with a deep UV lithography technique. The well-characterized monolayer of cytochrome c was immobilized on the microarray patterns using two different self-assembly processes. Physical and electrochemical properties of the self-assembled cytochrome c monolayer were investigated based on cyclic voltammetry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Also, its application in bioelectronic device was examined.

  • Iridium oxide films (IROFs) have been extensively studied as a material for electrical stimulation of neurons, as iridium oxide has higher charge storage capacity than other metal films. More recently, sputtered iridium oxide film (SIROF) has been studied, because it can be made more conveniently than activated iridium oxide film (AIROF). Typically, the SIROFs are grown at temperatures from 400 to 600 $^{\circ}C$. However, such high temperatures cannot be used when the iridium oxide (IrOx) film is to be deposited on a flexible polymer material, such as polyimide. In this paper, we show that we can still obtain excellent characteristics in SIROFs grown without heating (cold SIROF), by optimizing the growth conditions. We show that the oxygen flow rate is a critical parameter for controlling the surface properties of a cold SIROF. At an oxygen flow rate of 12 seem, the cold SIROF exhibited a charge storage capacity (CSC) of 60 mC/cm$^2$, which is comparable to or better than other published values for iridium oxide films including heated SIROFs. The film produced under these conditions also had the minimum impedance value of all cold SIROFs deposited for this study. A stability test and biocompatibility test also demonstrated the superiority of the optimized cold SIROF.

  • In DTP systems, satisfactory matching the appearance of displayed image on CRT and that of a reproduced binary image is very important. Most halftoning techniques assume that the printed color dots are square. However, most printers produce roughly circular dots. Thus, there is overlap between adjacent dots, and dots accupy adjcent space that should be empty space. These results are because the significant image distortion on the reproduced images. In this paper, we proposed a new tone correction digital halftoning method based on equi-visual perception characteristic.

  • We investigated the initial stages of formation of the Cu/polyimide interface using another two methods by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. : One, in-situ measurement with increasing of Cu deposition thickness onto polyimide(PI), the other, measurement with decreasing of Cu thickness of Cu/pI film by $Ar^+$ ion etching. From these results, we find that the chemical reactions exist in Cu/PI interface. However, the measured chemical reactions were different according to experimental method.

  • We studied liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide surface using obliquely ion beam exposure. A good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties, and residual DC property of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on polyimide surface.

  • In this study, we intended to investigate aging effect of polyimide prepared by VDPD(vapor deposition polymerized method). The prepared polymide was treated by the oxygen and argon gas plasma. And we evaluated the polyimide treated by plasma from contact angle, surface leakage current, FT-IR and SEM. We know that the structure of polyimide at surface are changed to amide structure by plasma treating. It seems that strong energy of plasma causes breaking the molecular chin of the polyimide. And surface roughness increases with plasma treating time increased and sequentially the wettability and leakage current increases.

  • The influence of ion implantation on surface properties of polymers was studied. We investigated microhardness, friction, wear and wettablility of polyimide. Energies of 50, 200keV were used with doses range from $1{\times}10^{13} to 1{\times}10^{16} [ions/cm^2]$. The implanted ion species were B, N and Ar. The microhardness of polyimide was increased after implantation for doses of $1{\times}10^{15}\; [ions/cm^2]$. A reduction of the friction coefficient was in most case correlated with a reduction of wear. The contact angles of water for $B^+,N^+$ implanted polyimide decreased from $76^{\circ}C$ to zero, as the fluencies increased at energies of 50 and 200 KeV. However, the contact angle of Ar ion implanted polyimide did not change under ambient room conditions even if the time elapsed. SEM measurement was performed to characterize the modified surface layer.

  • Polyimide films have excellent thermal stability, reliable mechanical properties and low dielectric constant. Therefore, this material is widely used in many industrial fields such as microelectronics, flexible circuits, semiconductor products and aerospace materials. In space applications, earth-orbiting hardware operates in environments that generally include neutral particles, charged particles such as trapped protons and electrons, solar protons, and cosmic rays. Under these conditions, polyimide films were changed in the optical, electrical and mechanical properties. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the effects of electron beam irradiation on polyimide. The O-H functional groups were created on the polyimide film surface in the results of FT-IR spectra. And it was found that the dielectric constants were changed as a function of electron beam dose.
