Growth hadit and demograph in a mature population of polygonatum and polygonatum humile in kanghwa island were studied for two growing seasons. Shoots of two species emerged early spring from the growing apices of the underdground rhizomes which had persisted for up to 1~5 year.after flowering, the ramets produced two rhizome buds at the shoot base. Bacause of the apical dominance in the rhizome system, a new rhizome was developed from only one bud, an actual bud,and the other latent buds were suppressed sothat remained dormant. The latent dud produced a new rhizome only when the actual dud was severed by the herbivores or by the physical obstacles. Therefore, the ramet number is not increased by the new rhizome from the latent bud. however, new ramets dould sometimes grow from latent buds which had been produced more than a year ago. Production of these ramets was main means increasing the ramet numbew and widening the potential zone of exploitation. Changes in size class of each ramet were noyiceable after a tear in small size-classes. Small ramets replaced themselves with larger-sized ramet, while large ramets with similar-sized or smallar-sized ramets. ramet numbers were average 0.82and 1.14 times of those fromthe previous year inp. involucratum and p. humile, though there was between-site variation. Almost all the ramets in the quadrats were alive during the growing season. when the entire rhizome systems were excavater next spring, there were many rhizomesegments without shoots, especially in p. involucratum. therefore, the drcrease of ramet number in p. involucratum in probably due to the climatic factors of winter.
Background: The aim of this study was to examine the resource allocation among the organs and the leaf morphology of Polygonatum humile. The data were collected from June 2014 to May 2015 in a natural P. humile stand of a temperate forest gap. Results: The dry weight of new rhizome ($R_0$) sharply decreased to the time of new shoot sprouting in next year and was constant for 2 ~ 3 years. However, dry weight of root on $R_0$ increased to the end of growth season and, thereafter, decreased slowly along the time elapsed. The correlation coefficients between the rhizome and the leaf sizes were 0.5 for the last year's rhizome ($R_1$) and 0.6 for $R_0$ and were significant at 0.1% level for $R_0$. The increase of one leaf a plant led to increase of the total leaf area, total leaf weight, and stem length. Moreover, the organ sizes' differences between two plants of the one leaf difference were almost significant at 1% level. In 11-leaf plant, the leaf length/width ratio and specific lea area increased to the second, relative leaf area to the fourth and relative leaf dry weight to the fifth, and thereafter, decreased to the last leaf. The differences in the values of these four parameters between two leaves on a stem were almost significant at 5% level. Conclusion: P. humile examined showed the close relationships between the last year's rhizome or this year's one and the shoot system (leaf and stem) sizes. The leaf number a shoot greatly influenced specific leaf area. P. humile's leaf might showed diverse morphology with leaf rank on a stem in a forest gap environment.
Background: The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between the sexual reproduction and the resource allocation in a natural Polygonatum humile population grown in a temperate mixed forest gap. For this aim, the plant size, the node which flower was formed, the fruiting rate, and the dry weight of each organ were monitored from June 2014 to August 2015. Results: Firstly, in 3-13-leaf plants, plants with leaves ${\leq}8$ did not have flowers and in plants with over 9 leaves the flowering rate increased with the number of leaves. Among plants with the same number of leaves, the total leaf area and dry weight of flowering plants were larger than those of non-flowering plants. The minimum leaf area and dry weight of flowering plants were $100cm^2$ and 200 mg, respectively. Secondary, the flowers were formed at the 3rd~8th nodes, and the flowering rate was highest at the 5th node. Thirdly, cumulative values of leaf properties from the last leaf (the top leaf on a stem) to the same leaf rank were greater in a plant with a reproductive organ than in a plant without a reproductive organ. Fourthly, fruit set was 6.1% and faithful fruit was 2.6% of total flowers. Biomasses of new rhizomes produced per milligram dry weight of leaf were $0.397{\pm}190mg$ in plants that set fruit and $0.520{\pm}0.263mg$ in plants that did not, and the difference between the 2 plant groups was significant at the 0.1% level. Conclusions: P. humile showed that the 1st flower formed on the 3rd node from the shoot's base. And P. humile showed the minimum plant size needed in fruiting, and fruiting restricted the growth of new rhizomes. However, the fruiting rate was very low. Thus, it was thought that the low fruiting rate caused more energy to invest in the rhizomes, leading to a longer rhizome. A longer rhizome was thought to be more advantageous than a short one to avoid the shading.
Germplasms having valuable characters are increasjngly important for modern breeding programs. This study was conducted to obtain the basic data for effective use of genetic resources of Polygonatum. The relationship of seven Polygonatum species collected widely in Korea was analyzed by RAPD markers. Total number of alleles amplified by nineteen random primers were 114 to 157, and variation in number of alleles was also diverse among seven species examined. The seven species were divided into two groups; one was of Polygonatum stenophyllum and Polygonatum humile. the other was of Polygonatum inflatum, Polygonatum lasianthum, Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum (1), (2), and for variegatum.
The Polygonatum spp. used in this study was collected from 1994 to 1997, and planted by species in Hamyang medicinal plant experimental station field. $30{\sim}40 $ species of Polygonatum spp. have been known to be distributed in the northern hemisphere, and $14{\sim}18$ species in Korea. In this study, collected seven species of Polygonatum spp. were investigated. Plant height was highest in Polygonatum stenophyllum followed by P. falcatum, P. humile, P. lasianthum var. coreanum.. Leaf length was longest in P. falcatum and shortest in P. odoratum and leaf width was the most wide in P. odoratum var. pluriflorum. P. stenophyllum had 111 flowers per stem. The other species had $14{\sim}22$ flowers per stem. The ratio of flower setting in each species was high at two but was 95.2% at above four in P. stenophyllum. The number of fruits was 14.8, 15.4 and 17.7 in P. odoratum, P. falcatum and P. humile, respectively. Other species did not produce fruit. Fruit setting percentage was high in P. odoratum as 81.5%. The number of branched rhizome doubled every year.
This study was done to accept basic data on chemical components in rhizome of native Polygonatum species in Korea. In mineral contents of their rhizome, total nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium concentration were higher in Polygonatum inflatum, P. humile and P. odoratum var. pluriflorum 1 than the other species in all the sampling dates. P. odoratum var. pluriflorum 1, P. odoratum var. pluriflorum 2 and P. inflatum showed relatively higher iron and mananese contents but P. odoratum var. pluriflorum 1 and P. stenophyllum did in copper content on November 20. Total sugar was acculated in later growth stages, although P. stenophyllum had the highest content but P. lasianthum var. coreanum had the lowest in all the sampling dates. Protein content was the highest in P. lasianthum var. coreanum but the lowest in P. stenophyllum in all the sampling dates. The major amino acids in their rhizomes were arginine followed by glutamic acid, and total and essential amino acid content were abundant in P. lasianthum var. coreanum and P. humile.

Adequate regrowth control of weeds and shrubs has been one of the important problem for pasture establishment by overseeding on reclaimed forest hilly land. This experiment was carried out on sloping shrub land near Anseong, Gyeonggido to evaluate the effects of herbicide application on growth control of native weeds, shrubs and trees. We evaluated 63 different weeds and wood species in the trials, which are grown common in korean forest. Buthidazol and 4 other herbicides (sodium chlorate, glyphosate, U-46 and gramoxone) were sprayed each at two application rates during the period of the most intensive growth, on 20 July 45 days before overseeding of pasture species. Glyphosate and sodium chlorate gave excellant control of growth of all species. However. Uncus effusus, Carex heterostachya, Polygonatum humile, Rubus corchorifolius, Lonicera coeralea and Rhododendron mucronulatum were classified as a tolerant weed and wood species to herbicides. Herbicide buthidazol showed also successive control of regrowth of weeds and wood species. This study was conducted to obtain the basic data for practical use of the Polygonatum genetic resources. The 20 collections were analyzed by principal component analysis of 8 characters and cluster analysis. In the principal analysis, the first, the second and the third components contributed 54.10%, 18.95% and 11.62% of the variations, respectively. The cumulative contribution from the first to the third principal components was 84.68%. The first principal component was related to shape and size of plant, and assimilatory, reserve and reproductive organs. The second principal component was related to growth and development of plant, and reserve organ. And the third principal component was related to growth and development of plant. Based on cluster analysis, the 20 collections were classified into 4 distinct groups with the average distance greater than 0.7 between groups. Group I was Polygonatum sibiricum $D_{ELAR}$ and Group II included P. odoratum var. pluriflorum $O_{HWI}$, P. odoratum var. pluriflorum $O_{HWI}$ for 'Variegatum' Y. Lee, for. nov., P. odoratum var. thunbergii $H_{ARA}$ and P. odoratum var. maximowiczii $K_{OIDZ}$. GroupIII was P. involucratum $M_{AXIM}$, P. desoulavyi $K_{OMAROV}$ and P. humile $F_{ISHER}$ ex. $M_{AXIM}$. And GroupIV included P. lasianthum var. coreanum $N_{AKAI}$ and P. inflatum $K_{OMAROV}$.
Morphological characteristics and growth patterns of 20 Polygonatum collections indigenous to Korea were examined and the collections were classified to obtain the basic data for practical use of Polygonatum genetic resources. Based on the cluster analysisi 20 collections were distinctly classified into seven groups with average distance greater than 0.6 between groups. Group I was p. sibiricum Delar, and group II included p. odoratum var. pluriforum Ohwi, P. odoratum var. pturiforum Ohwi 'Variegata' and P. odoratum var. maximowiczii Koidz.. Group III was P. odoratum var. thunbergii Hara, group IV included P. lasianthum var. coreanum Nakai, and group V was P. involucratum Maxim. and P. desoulavyi Komarov. group Ⅵ was P. inflatum Komarov and group Ⅶ was P. humile Fischer ex. Maxim. Morphologically, group I was larger than the other groups, group II and III were medium, and group IV to Ⅶ were small. In the classification of genus Polyognatum, stem length, stem habit, phyllotaxis, stem angularity, petiole, inflorescence, perianth, bract and rhizome were particularly important characters. Group I to III were thought to be useful as the edible and medicinal resources plants, and group IV to Ⅶ were thought to be useful as ornamental plants.
