  • Earthquakes are one of the most important disasters affecting underground structures. Urban gas underground pipes may cause safety problems of structures in the event of an earthquake. Since Korea began digital observation, the number of earthquakes has been steadily increasing. The seismic design standard for urban gas pipes was established in 2008, but it is difficult to estimate the impact of pipes in the event of an earthquake based on the installation of pipes. In this study, structural analysis was performed on PE (polyethylene pipe) pipes and PLP (polyethylene coated steel pipe) pipes, which are mainly used as buried pipes in Korea, according to environmental and pipe variables in the event of an earthquake. This study sought to find the variables of the most vulnerable buried pipe by modeling pipes through Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and generating displacement on the ground. Through this study, it was confirmed that the larger the elastic modulus of the soil, the deeper the buried depth, the smaller the tube diameter, and the higher the pressure, the more PLP pipes are affected by earthquakes than PE. Based on these results, the vulnerable points of buried urban gas pipes are inferred and used for special inspections of buried pipes in the event of an earthquake.

  • Two polyethylene tubes were inserted into the esophagus of anesthetized rabbit in order to record the fluctuation of the intraluminal pressure through the orifices located near the tips of the tubes. The orifice of the first tube was 10 cm apart from the incisor of the rabbit and the orifice of the second tube was 5 cm below that of the first one. The tubes were filled with saline solution running at various rates ranging from 1.5 ml/min. to 4.2 ml/min. The tubes were connected to the pressure transducers and the electrical signals were recorded by the physiograph. When the peristaltic wave approached to the orifice a rise in the pressure was recorded, returning to the base line when the portion of the orifice was quiescent. The frequency of the peristaltic motion and the velocity of the wave were studied in connection with the flow rate of saline solution through the tubes and in the case of massive acute hemorrhage. The results obtained were as follows: 1. There was reflux of fluid induced during the procedure of the experiment. This outwrad flow through the pharynx seemed to elicite swallowing reflexes. Accordingly, the frequency of peristalsis of the esophagus was largely dependent on the flow rate of the fluid through the inserted tubes. By the flow rate of 1.5 ml/min., 2.5 ml/min., or 4.2 ml/min., the frequencies of the peristalsis were revealed to be $8.6{\pm}3.6/10min.,\;14.5{\pm}4.8/10min.\;or\;21.1{\pm}6.3/10min.,$ respectively. The velocity of peristalsis also coincided with the enhanced motility of the esophagus, showing $6.6{\pm}1.5\;cm/sec.,\;8.9{\pm}3.9\;cm/sec.,\;or\;12.4{\pm}4.6\;cm/sec.,$ respectively. 2. By acute hemorrhage, amounting to 2% of the body weight, the frequency of the peristalsis increased to twofold of the control and the propagation velocity also increased by 52 percent. 3. Retransfusion of the shed blood resulted in divergent responses. In some cases there were noticable ameliorations of the effects brought by acute hemorrhage, and in the others there were still increasing tendenies of the motility after the transfusion. 4. Some speculation was made about the possibility of a kind of relationship between the irreversibility of the hemorrhagic shock and the absence of responses by transfusion. 5. The peristalsis persisted even after complete disconnection at the midportion of the esophagus, reaffirming the view of a central regulation of the spatiotemporally coordinated motility, peristalsis.

  • In order to evaluate NMR spectrometer as the analytical tool for identification of individual adjuvant in crop protection products, the standard sample of individual adjuvant was analyzed by NMR spectrometer and then the formulation of crop protection products was also analyzed. Almost polymer system of surfactant was a co-polymer and there was an excess of ethylene. The most intense signal comes from long polyethylene blocks, 70.5 ppm. The carbonyl groups of ester group resonate at 173.5 ppm. Analytical sample was prepared in NMR tube without extraction, cleanup, concentration, or chromatographic separation. Identification of individual adjuvant in crop protection products was conducted by comparison of sample and reference spectra. NMR spectrometer was useful to analyze adjuvant in crop protection products without preparation process.

  • In southeastern regions of the US, herbage systems are primarily based on grazing or hay feeding with low nutritive value warm-season perennial grasses. Nutritious herbage such as annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) may be more suitable for preserving as baleage for winter feeding even with more intensive production inputs. Emerging in-line wrapped baleage storage systems featuring rapid wrapping and low polyethylene film requirements need to be tested for consistency of storing nutritive value of a range of annual ryegrass herbage. A ryegrass storage trial was conducted with 24-h wilted 'Marshall' annual ryegrass harvested at booting, heading and anthesis stages using three replicated in-line wrapped tubes containing ten round bales per tube. After a six-month storage period, nutritive value changes and fermentation end products differed significantly by harvest stage but not by bale location. Although wilted annual ryegrass exhibited a restricted fermentation across harvest stages characterized by high pH and low fermentation end product concentrations, butyric acid concentrations were less than 1 g/kg dry matter, and lactic acid was the major organic acid in the bales. Mold coverage and bale aroma did not differ substantially with harvest stage or bale location. Booting and heading stage-harvested ryegrass baleage were superior in nutritive value to anthesis stage-harvested herbage. Based on the investigated nutritive value and fermentation characteristics, individual bale location within in-line tubes did not significantly affect preservation quality of ryegrass round bale silages.

  • The present study investigated the role of spinal glutamate recycling in the development of orofacial inflammatory pain or trigeminal neuropathic pain. Experiments were carried out on male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing between 230 and 280 g. Under anesthesia, a polyethylene tube was implanted in the atlanto-occipital membrane for intracisternal administration. IL-$1{\beta}$-induced inflammation was employed as an orofacial acute inflammatory pain model. IL-$1{\beta}$ (10 ng) was injected subcutaneously into one vibrissal pad. We used the trigeminal neuropathic pain animal model produced by chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve. DL-threo-${\beta}$-benzyloxyaspartate (TBOA) or methionine sulfoximine (MSO) was administered intracisternally to block the spinal glutamate transporter and the glutamine synthetase activity in astroglia. Intracisternal administration of TBOA produced mechanical allodynia in naïve rats, but it significantly attenuated mechanical allodynia in rats with interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$-induced inflammatory pain or trigeminal neuropathic pain. In contrast, intracisternal injection of MSO produced anti-allodynic effects in rats treated with IL-$1{\beta}$ or with infraorbital nerve injury. Intracisternal administration of MSO did not produce mechanical allodynia in naive rats. These results suggest that blockade of glutamate recycling induced pro-nociception in na?ve rats, but it paradoxically resulted in anti-nociception in rats experiencing inflammatory or neuropathic pain. Moreover, blockade of glutamate reuptake could represent a new therapeutic target for the treatment of chronic pain conditions.

  • Toluene in air and blood and hippuric acid in urine were checked for the 41 female workers who are exposed to toluene and have normal liver function in shoe making factories in July, 1993. Toluene in air was sampled with charcoal by personal air sampler at least 4 times and analyzed by gas chromatography. At the end of shift, blood and spot urine were collected with a vacuum tube containing EDTA and a polyethylene bottle for detecting blood toluene and urine hippuric acid and analyzed by gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Means of air and blood toluene and urine hippuric acid concentrations were 34.35ppm, 0.360mg/L, and 1.78g/g creatinine, respectively. Toluene in air showed a good correlation with hippuric acid in urine(r=0.4503) and toluene in blood(r=0.4596). The hippuric acid in urine and toluene in blood corresponded 10 exposure of 100ppm toluene in air were 2.628g/g creatinine and 0.481mg/L. Blood toluene and urine hippuric acid expected ratio were not correlated to the obesity index and working duration, however increased with age.

  • A cecostomy technique (surgery for inserted tube into ceca) was developed to quantify urine backflow into the ceca of fed and feed-deprived chickens. Two days post-surgery, cecostomised chickens were flushed with 20ml of warm saline solution every other day for 10 days. Excreta were collected daily from cecal tubing and cloaca by surgical attachment of polyethylene collection vessels to the chickens. Uric acid excretion was significantly increased in fed compared to feed-deprived chickens (P<0.05). Amount of determined uric acid from the ceca was 7.74% and 5.31% of total excretion for fed and ffeed-deprived chickens, respectively. Post-mortem examinations ascertained that the caeca were intact around the Latex tubing. The results of the study indicated that at least 5% of daily urine production flow retrograde into the ceca of roosters.

  • For TEM study of biological samples or polymers that are contained in organic structure, it is often required that the sample is prepared by using ultramicrotome and stained with proper agents to increase the contrast of organic structure. In this study, we investigated an efficient TEM sample preparation method for ductile heterogeneity material by using ultramicrotomy. Cryo-ultramicrotomy is a suitable method that is capable of rendering sample hardness for various ductile materials. However, it has several factors to consider, such as experimental cost, working time and finding the optimal staining conditions. To satisfy these considerations, we prepared TEM sample by using ultramicrotome without cryofunction, and secured the sample hardness by applying the staining process prior to ultrathin sectioning. The cross-linked polyethylene structure in the sample was stained with the 2% $RuO_4$ solution in a sealed test tube for 24 hours at $4^{\circ}C$. After the sample staining, ultrathin sections of sample were prepared using ultramicrotome. As a result, it was revealed that the difficulties associated with staining of ultrathin sections prepared by low-temperature conditions were improved. In addition, appropriate staining depth of sample could be selected for sectioning process. The quality of TEM sample obtained by using this method was better than that of cryo-ultramicroscopy. Finally, it is expected that our method could be effectively applied in TEM sample preparation for a variety of nano-bio convergence materials.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe shear bond strength of composite resin to dentin following surface treatment. Freshly extracted forty-eight sound human molars were used in this study. They were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ physiologic saline solution before experiment. The teeth was then mounted with self curing acrylic resin in brass mold. The buccal surfaces of the teeth were grinding approximately 1.5mm by means of water-irrigated grinding wheel to expose the flattened fresh dentin surfaces. The specimens were divided into 6 groups according to preparation and treatment procedures on dentin surfaces; Group 1: Untreated after preparation with No.301 diamond point Group 2: Treated with primer for 60 seconds after preparation with No.301 diamond point Group 3: Untreated after preparation with No.700 fissure carbide bur Group 4: Treated with primer for 60 seconds after preparation with No.700 fissure carbide bur Group 5: Untreated after grinding with 600 grit silicon carbide paper Group 6: Treated with primer for 60 seconds after grinding with 600 grit silicon carbide paper Light cure dental adhesive was applicated to each specimen. Silux plus(3M) was inserted then into polyethylene tube of 3mm diameter and 3mm height, and polymerized to dentin surface. All of the specimens were stored in distilled water at $35.6^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours prior to testing. The shear bond strength was measured using an Instron Universal Testing Machine. The results obtained from this study were as follows: 1. The shear bond strength to dentin was the highest in group II. 2. The shear bond strength to dentin was the lowest in group III. 3. There was no significant difference in shear bond strength to dentin according to preparation instrument. 4. The primer treatment group showed significantly greater shear bond strength than untreated group.
