Synthesis and Properties of Liquid Crystalline Polyesters with Banana-Shaped Mesogens

  • A series of LC polyesters containing banana-shaped mesogen and flexible spacer were synthesized. Their structures were identified by FT/IR- and NMR-spectrometry. Thermal and mesomorphic properties were investigated by using DSC and polarizing microsope. Structure of mesophase was investigated by using x-ray diffractimetry.

  • Two-component polyurethane (PU) flame-retardant coatings were prepared by blending tribromo modified polyesters ($TBAO_s$) and isocyanate.$TBAO_s$ were synthesized by condensation polymerization of tribromoacetic acid, a flame-retardant component, with 1,4-butanediol, adipic acid, and trimethylolpropane. The content of tribromoacetic acid was varied by 10, 20, and 30 wt% for the reaction. Various physical properties of these new flame-retardant coatings were comparable to nonflame-retardant coatings. Coatings with 20 wt% tribromoacetic acid did not burn during the vertical burning test.

  • 2,5-Di-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)-4'-nitrostilbene (3) was prepared and polycondensed with terephthaloyl chloride, adipoyl chloride, and sebacoyl chloride to yield novel T-type polyesters (4-6) containing the NLO-chromophores dioxynitrostilbenyl groups, which constituted parts of the polymer backbones. Polymers 4-6 are soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. They showed thermal stability up to 260 oC in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperatures obtained from differential scanning calorimetry in the range 90-95 oC. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients (d33) of poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength were around 1.42 ´ 10-9 esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability up to 5 oC higher than glass-transition temperature (Tg), and there was no SHG decay below 100 oC due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

  • An intermediate, tetramethylene bis (orthophosphate), was prepared by the esterification of pyrophosphoric acid and l,4-butanediol. Then pyrophosphoric-containing modified polyesters (ATTBs) were synthesized by polycondensation of tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate), trimethylolpropane, adipic acid, and l,4-butanediol. The content of l,4-butanediol was varied from 10 to 20wt% for the reaction. The increase of the amount of l,4-butanediol in the synthesis of ATTBs resulted in increase in average molecular weight and decrease in kinematic viscosity owing to the excellent flowability and reactivity of l,4-butanediol.

  • The isolation and structure elucidation Of five new oligo-nicotinated sesquiterpene polyesters with a dihydroagarofuran core from Maytenus ilicifolia, named cangorins F, G,H,1 and J [1-5], is described. The strurtures of these compounds, which possessed nicotinyl,benroyl, and areryl groups as esterifying moieties, were elucidaied by $^IH- and ^{13}C$-nmrspectroscopic studies, inrlusive of hereronuclear correlation, long-range correlation, and nOespectra, along with mass and cd spectral dara, and the X-ray crystallographic analysis of 1.

  • Polyesters containing enaryloxynitriles moiety have been newly prepared from p-bis[1-[4-(3-hydroxypropyl)phenoxy]-2,2-dicyano vinyl]benzene (3) and common diols with terephthaloyl chloride. The copolyesters have a good solubility in common organic solvents as well as polar aprotic solvents. They undergo a curing reaction at around 350 $^{circ}C$ and show a 50-60${\%}$ of residual weight at 500 $^{circ}C$. The enhanced thermal stabilities were due to the intramolecular cyclization or intermolecular cross-linking reaction of the dicyanovinyl group incorporated into polyester by copolymerization.

  • Modified polyesters (TTBA-10C, -20C, -30C) that contain phosphorus and chlorine were synthesized by the condensation polymerization of tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate), neohexanediol trichlorobenzoate, 1,4-butanediol and adipic acid, in which tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate) and neohexanediol trichlorobenzoate were prepared previously in our laboratory. In this study, two-component flame-retardant polyurethane coatings (TTBA-10C/HDI-trimer=TTHD-10C, TTBA-20C/ HDI-trimer= TTHD-20C, TTBA-30C/HDI-trimer= TTHD-30C) were obtained by curing at room temperature with the synthesized TTBAs and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)-trimer as a curing agent. The obtained TTHDs were made into coating samples and used as test samples for various physical properties. The physical properties of the flame-retardant coatings containing chlorine and phosphorus groups were generally inferior to those containing only phosphorus group. Flame retardancy was tested by vertical and horizontal combustion method, and $45_{\circ}$ Meckel burner method. Since the retardancy of flame-retardant coatings containing chlorine and phosphorus groups was better than that containing only phosphorus group, it could be concluded that the retardancy by the synergism effect of chlorine and phosphorus groups exhibited.
