  • Vinyl acetate was polymerized in ultraviolet-ray initiated bulk system at low temperatures using 2,2-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN) or 2,2-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as the photoinitiator, respectively. High molecular weight (HMW) poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) having number-average degree of polymerization ($P_n$) of 3,900-7,800 and syndiotactic diad (S-diad) content of 52.5-54.0% could be prepared by complete saponification of synthesized linear poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) having $P_n$ 5,900-9,400 obtained at conversion of below 30%. $P_n$ of PVA using ADMVN was larger than that of PVA using AIBN. On the other hand, conversion of the former was smaller than that of the latter, and it was found that the initiation rate of the ADMVN was lower than that of AIBN. This could be explained by a fact that the rate of photolysis of AIBN is faster than that of ADMVN due to the higher quantum yield or dissociation rate constant of AIBN than that of ADMVN. The $P_n$, syndiotacticity, and whiteness of PVA from PVAc polymerized at lower temperatures were superior to those of PVA from PVAc polymerized at higher temperatures.

  • Poly(vinyl acetate) films containing benzophenone were photocrosslinked by continuous UV irradiation.UV irradiation of PVAc film containing 5% benzophenone induced bulk crosslinking of the polymer indicated by 84.1% of gel fraction after ethyl acetate extraction. The crosslinking was attributed to the recombination of tertiary polymer radicals generated upon UV irradiation, which was enhanced by the hydrogen abstraction of benzophenone. Also the UV irradiation resulted in scission of ester linkage and photooxidation of PVAc surface, which was verified by ATR and zeta potential analysis, implying that the PVAc surface became more polar and hydrophilic. The zeta potential proportionally increased from +4.5mV to -26.8 mV with increasing UV irradiation. Also the surface energy of the PVAc film increased with higher UV irradiation upto 56.5 $mJ/m^2$ by the enhanced Lewis acid/base component with larger contribution of Lewis acid parameter. Accordingly the crosslinked PVAc showed higher thermal stability with increasing UV energy.

  • In this study, nano-sized poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) particles containing lavender oil as a core material were prepared by using emulsification-diffusion method. Effects of experimental parameters on the characteristics and the release behavior were examined with a field emission- scanning electron microscope, an electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotometer, a visible spectrophotometer and a high performance liquid chromatography The resulting aromatic particles could be prepared in nano-sized globular shapes with the mean particle size of 224 nm by controlling the experimental conditions. From the evaluation of release properties of aromatic PVAc nanoparticles with or without PVA coating, it was found that the aromatic particles coated with PVA show more sustaining and stable release behaviors. Our research on aromatic PVAc nanoparticles could be applied for durable fragrant finishing for textiles, leather products and so on.

  • The poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fiber is recognized as the best candidate because of its good machanical properties together with excellent resistance to alkalis[1-5]. PVA cannot be prepared by the direct polymerization due to tautomerism of vinyl alcohol monomer. Thus PVA is obtained by the saponification of poly(vinyl ester) like poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc). • Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) prepared by emulsion polymerization has broad applications for additive such as paint binder, adhesive for wood and paper due to its low glass transition temperature which help to plasticize substrate resins. Since emulsion polymerization has a disadvantage that surfactant and ionic initiator degrade properties of the product polymer, poly (vinyl acetate-eo-ethyl acrylate) (VAc-EA) was synthesized using potassium persulfate as catalyst and polyvinylalcohol (PVA) as protective colloid to prevent the degradation. The copolymer latex product was internally plasticized and has enhanced adhesion, water resistance during VAc-EA emulsion polymerization. No coagulation and complete conversion occur with the reactant mixture of 10 mmol/L potassium persulfate, 10 mmol/L poly ( vinyl alcohol) (PVA 17). As the concentrations of PVA increase, the viscosity becomes increase.

  • The synthesis of titanium dioxide nanofibers with 200-300nm diameter was presented. The new inorganic-organic hybrid nanofibers were prepared by sol-gel processing and electrospinning technique using a viscous solution of titanium isopropoxide (TiP)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc). Pure titanium dioxide nanofibers were obtained by high temperature calcination of the inorganic-organic composite fibers. SEM, FT-IR, and WAXD techniques were employed to characterize these nanofibers. The titanium dioxide nanostructured fibers have rougher surface and smaller diameter compare with PVAc/TiP composite nanofibers. The anatase to rutile phase transformation occurred when the calcination temperature was increased from $600^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • For the purpose of obtaining surface-anionized poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel beads, vinyl acetate(VAc) and methacrylic acid(MMA) were copolymerized by the suspension polymerization technique and followed by the saponification. It was confirmed by $^1$H-NMR that the copolymerized microspheres contained carboxylic acid groups in their surface. poly(VAc-co-MAA) microspheres were completely saponified in the heterogeneous system. The saponification reaction was laster than that of PVAc microspheres. We observed the swelling property of saponified PVA microspheres treated in the acidic solution and in the alkaline solution successively. Saponified microspheres shrank in acidic solution and swelled in alkaline solution respectively, which was reversible. from the result, saponified microspheres were highly water-absorbing hydrogel beads and were certified -COOH group at their surface by $^1$H-NMR and FT-IR.

  • PVA membrane was widely used in the dehydration pervaporation process. PVA membrane showed remakable selectivity towed water and an excellent film-forming polymer, with a good resistance to orgamic solvents but it has poor stability in aqueous mixtures. Generally the PVA is manufactured by the hydrolysis reaction from poly vinyl acetate(PVAc) and so the degree of PVA hydrolysis is a major parameter for properties of PVA membrane such as the crystallinity and polarity.

  • Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) nanoparticles were synthesized in oil/water miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of low amount of hexadecane as a cosurfactant. The nanoparticles were tested to apply as a drug carrier. The shape of nanoparticles was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the average particle size and size distribution were examined by particle size analyzer. Inclusion of antibiotic drugs into the nanoparticles was confirmed by CHO, C=O, and OH peak of FT-IR. Size of the nanoparticles were adjusted between 80∼300 nm by changing the homogenization rate and amount of cosurfactant and surfactant. The monomer droplets prepared by miniemulsion method using a cosurfactant were homogeneous and stable compared with those prepared by conventional emulsion polymerization. This might be occurred due to the prevention of Ostwald ripening and coalescence between droplets by using hexadecane as a cosurfactant.
