  • Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT : PSS) has attracted a great deal of attention as a transparent conductive material for organic solar cells or organic light-emitting diodes due to its high electrical conductivity, optical transparency, and excellent mechanical flexibility. It is well known that a solvent doping for PEDOT : PSS thin-films significantly increases the conductivity of films. In this paper, the effect of various kinds of solvent doping and post-treatment on the electrical and structural properties of PEDOT : PSS thin-films is investigated. The solvent doping greatly increases the conductivity of PEDOT : PSS thin-films up to 884 S/cm. A further enhancement of the conductivity of PEDOT : PSS thin-films is achieved by the solvent post-treatment which raises the conductivity up to 1131 S/cm. The enhancement is mainly caused by the depletion of insulating PSS and forming conducting PEDOT-rich granular networks. Strong optical absorption peaks at the wavelength of 225 nm of PEDOT : PSS thin-films indicate the depletion of insulating PSS by post-treatment. We believe that the solvent post-treatment is a promising method to achieve highly conductive transparent PEDOT : PSS thin-films for applications in efficient, low-cost and flexible organic devices.

  • Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) polymers with different electric conductivities were synthesized directly on a FTO substrate via a chemical polymerization method and applied as a platinum (Pt)-free counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The catalytic properties of the PEDOT as a function of electrical conductivity were studied using cyclic voltammograms, J-V measurements and impedance spectroscopy. The PEDOT counter electrode with around 340 S/cm conductivity exhibited the best performance as a counter electrode for tri-iodide reduction. The ability to modulate catalytic activity of PEDOT with changes in conductivity shows one of promising routes for developing new counter electrode of Pt-free DSSCs.

  • In this study, composite transparent electrodes were fabricated either from a conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) or silver nanowire (AgNW). Three transparent electrodes such as PEDOT:PSS, PEDOT:PSS and AgNW mixture, and AgNW were fabricated. As for a transparent electrode, measured sheet resistance values were 89.6, 60.6 and 28.6 Ω/sq, and the transmittance values were 80.2, 82.0 and 83.8% while surface roughness (Rq) values were 4.1, 8.1, 20.4 nm for PEDOT:PSS, PEDOT:PSS and AgNW mixture, and AgNW, respectively. To verify the overall performance of these composite electrodes, we applied these electrodes to the top electrode of the solution-processed organic solar cells (OSCs). PEDOT:PSS provided the best performance with a fill factor (FF) of 51.2% and a photoconversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.2%, while traditional metal top electrode OSC provided FF of 60.5% and PCE of 3.1%.

  • We report the enhanced performance of poly(N-vinylcarbozole) (PVK)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)-based quantum-dot light-emitting diodes by inserting the polyaniline:poly (p-styrenesulfonic acid) (PANI:PSS) interlayer. The QD-LED with PANI:PSS interlayer exhibited a higher luminance and luminous current efficiency than that without PANI:PSS. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy results exhibited different electronic energy alignments of QD-LEDs with/without the PANI:PSS interlayer. By inserting the PANI:PSS interlayer, the hole-injection barrier at the QD layer/PVK interface was reduced from 1.45 to 1.23 eV via the energy level down-shift of the PVK layer. The reduced barrier height alleviated the interface carrier charging responsible for the deterioration of the current and luminance efficiency. This suggests that the insertion of PANI:PSS interlayer in QD-LEDs contributed to (i) increase the p-type conductivity and (ii) reduce the hole barrier height of QDs/PVK, which are critical factors leading to improve the efficiency of QD-LEDs.

  • We have investigated the feasibility of fabricating fine stripes using needle coating for potential applications in solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). To this end, we have employed an aqueous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) solution that has been widely used as a hole injection layer (HIL) of OLEDs and performed needle coatings by varying the process parameters such as the coating gap and coating speed. As expected, the stripe width is reduced with increasing coating speed. However, the central thickness of the stripe is rather increased as the coating speed increases, which is different from other coating processes such as slot-die and blade coatings. It is due to the fact that the meniscus formed between the needle tip and the substrate varies depending sensitively on the coating speed. It is also found that the stripe width and thickness are reduced with increasing coating gap. To demonstrate its applicability to OLEDs, we have fabricated a red OLED stripe and obtained light emission with the width of about 90㎛.

  • OLEDs based on organic thin films are similar to semiconductor base light-emitting diodes in that they were also considered to be one of the next generation flat-panel displays. They are attractive because of low-operating voltage, low power consumption, ease of fabrication, and low cost. In this study, we used poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly (4-styrenesulfonate) (PE DOT : PSS) as a hole injection layer. In this experiment spin coating method was used with various speed rate. The fundamental structure of the OLEDs was ITO/PEDOT:PSS/NPB/$Alq_3$/Al. As a result, we obtained the enhancement performance of OLEDs when the spin coating speed was 4000 rpm. We obtained a maximum luminance of 24334 $cd/m^2$ at a current density of 967 $mA/cm^2$.

  • Bacterial cellulose based actuator with large displacement was developed for biomimetic robots. Bacterial cellulose has 3D nanostructure with high porosity which was composed of the nanofibers. Freeze dried bacterial cellulose was dipped into ionic liquid solution such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium(BMIMCl) to enhance the actuation performance due to increase the ionexchange capacity and ionic conductivity. And Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly (styrnenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS) was used for the electrodes of both side of bacterial cellulose actuator by dipping and drying method. The FT-IR and XRD were conducted to examine the electrochemical changes of developed bacterial cellulose actuator. The biomimetic caudal fin was designed using bacterial cellulose actuator and PDMS to verify the possibility for biomimetic robot. The step and harmonic response were conducted to evaluate the performance of developed biomimetic actuator.

  • We have investigated the effect of hole-injection buffer layer and cathodes in organic light-emitting diodes u sing poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly (stylenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) in a device structure of $ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TPD/Alq_3/Cathode$. Polymer PEDOT:PSS buffer layer was made using spin casting method. Current-voltage, luminance-voltage characteristics and efficiency of device were measured at room temperature with a variation of cathode materials. The device with LiF/Al cathode shows an improvement of external quantum efficiency approximately by a factor of ten compared to that of Al cathode only device. Our observation shows that the energy barrier-height in cathode side is important in improving the efficiency of the organic light-emitting diodes.

  • Using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulation tool, we have offered a design guideline of a slot-die head having a simple T-shaped cavity through an analysis of the fluid dynamics in terms of cavity pressure and outlet velocity, which affect the uniformity of coated thin films. We have visualized the fluid flow with a transparent slot-die head where poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is injected. We have shown that the fluid dynamics inside the slot-die head depends sensitively on the cavity depth, cavity length, land length, and channel gap (i.e., shim thickness). Of those, the channel gap is the most critical parameter that determines the uniformity of the pressure and velocity distributions. A pressure drop inside the cavity is shown to be reduced with decreasing shim thickness. To quantify it, we have also calculated the coefficient of variation (CV). In accordance with Hagen-Poiseuille's laws and electron-hydraulic analogy, the CV value is decreased with increasing cavity depth, cavity length, and land length.

  • The yellow base polymer light emitting diodes(PLEDs) with double emission and hole blocking layers were prepared to improve the light efficiency. ITO(indium tin oxide) and PEDOT : PSS[poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly(styrene sulfolnate)] were used as cathode and hole transport materials. The PFO[poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] and MEH-PPV[poly(2-methoxy-5(2-ethylhe xoxy)-1,4-phenylenevinyle)] were used as the light emitting host and guest materials, respectively. TPBI[Tpbi1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene] was used as hole blocking layer. To investigate the optimization of device structure, we prepared four kinds of PLED devices with different structures such as single emission layer(PFO : MEH-PPV), two double emission layer(PFO/PFO : MEH-PPV, PFO : MEH-PPV/PFO) and double emission layer with hole blocking layer(PFO/PFO : MEH-PPV/TPBI). The electrical and optical properties of prepared devices were compared. The prepared PLED showed yellow emission color with CIE color coordinates of x = 0.48, y = 0.48 at the applied voltage of 14V. The maximum luminance and current density were found to be about 3920 cd/$m^2$ and 130 mA/$cm^2$ at 14V, respectively for the PLED device with the structure of ITO/PEDOT : PSS/PFO/PFO : MEH-PPV/TPBI/LiF/Al.
