  • For the purpose of obtaining surface-anionized poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel beads, vinyl acetate(VAc) and methacrylic acid(MMA) were copolymerized by the suspension polymerization technique and followed by the saponification. It was confirmed by $^1$H-NMR that the copolymerized microspheres contained carboxylic acid groups in their surface. poly(VAc-co-MAA) microspheres were completely saponified in the heterogeneous system. The saponification reaction was laster than that of PVAc microspheres. We observed the swelling property of saponified PVA microspheres treated in the acidic solution and in the alkaline solution successively. Saponified microspheres shrank in acidic solution and swelled in alkaline solution respectively, which was reversible. from the result, saponified microspheres were highly water-absorbing hydrogel beads and were certified -COOH group at their surface by $^1$H-NMR and FT-IR.

  • Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate (VA). It is important to determine the VA content of EVA, since the properties of EVA depend highly on the VA content. EVA copolymers have been used in a wide range of applications appropriate for the different VA contents. IR, NMR, and TGA are generally used for determination of the VA content of EVA copolymers. Of these, TGA is the most reliable method and can be applied to cured EVAs. Analytical methods for determination of the VA content and properties of EVA copolymers via TGA were herein reviewed. Thermal behaviors of EVA copolymers (glass transition temperature ($T_g$), melting point ($T_m$), and crystallization temperature ($T_c$)) determined by DSC were also reviewed. Analysis of the related literature revealed that the $T_g$, $T_m$, and $T_c$ decrease by about 0.46, 1.36, and $2.08^{\circ}C$, respectively, for every 1 wt% in VA content. A method for determining the degree of crosslinking of cured EVA copolymers was also reviewed, and the degree of crosslinking tends to increase with the decrease in the VA content.

  • PVA membrane was widely used in the dehydration pervaporation process. PVA membrane showed remakable selectivity towed water and an excellent film-forming polymer, with a good resistance to orgamic solvents but it has poor stability in aqueous mixtures. Generally the PVA is manufactured by the hydrolysis reaction from poly vinyl acetate(PVAc) and so the degree of PVA hydrolysis is a major parameter for properties of PVA membrane such as the crystallinity and polarity.

  • Poly(vinyl cinnamate) had excellent resolution and no dark reaction and high etch resistent. But is was developed in polar solvent. A aqueous-photopolymer was synthesised for improvment of developability. Poly(vinyl cinnamoyl acetate)(PVCiA) and aqueous-PVCiA(PVCiA-s) was prepared and was characterized with H-NMR. The characteristic of sensitivity and developablity of coating was investigated by Grayscale method.

  • The rheological properties of highly concentrated polymer bonded explosive simulant were studied by using poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) with 30 and 60% vinyl acetate (VA) content as a binder, respectively. Calcium carbonate and Dechlorane, whose physical properties are similar to resarch department explosive (RDX)'s, were used as fillers. The suspensions were mixed in a batch melt mixer and it was possible to fill 75 v% at maximum. From dynamic mechanical analysis, Dechlorane showed higher interaction with binder resins than that with calcium carbonate fillers. The effects of microstructural change on the rheological properties of the suspensions were investigated by a plate-plate rheometer with constant shear rate and constant shear stress modes, respectively. The theoretical maximum packing fraction of EVA31/Dechlorane suspension obtained from Krieger-Dougherty equation was 70 v% and it was thought that 2000 Pa was proper shear stress condition for this melt processing.

  • As a part of a research on the development of polymeric textile finishing agents, polymerization of low molecular weight copolymers containing maleic anhydride residues have been studied. In order to obtain low molecular weight poly(maleic anhydride-co-vinyl acetate) copolymers, the feed ratio of the two monomers and the concentrations of initiator and chain transfer agent were varied in the copolymerization. The copolymers were characterized using GPC, NMR, FTIR, DSC, and TGA. Copolymers with molecular weights in the range 2,150 to 6,630 have been prepared and characterized. The hydrolysis of the anhydride groups of the copolymer in water is also discussed.
