Effect of Plasticization of Poly(Vinyl Cinnamate) on Liquid Crystal Orientation Stability

  • A cinnamate group is a well-known compound group used in the dimerization reaction by ultraviolet irradiation, and cinnamate polymers are studied as photoalignment materials. In this study, the radical reaction of cinnamate side groups attached to a flexible polymer backbone is considered feasible using thermal energy. To induce the thermal reaction of cinnamate side groups, we modified the flexibility of poly(vinyl cinnamate) by introducing a plasticizer into the polymers and investigated the thermal reaction behavior of cinnamate side groups. The plasticization of poly(vinyl cinnamate) makes the induction of the thermal reaction of cinnamate side groups easier than that of unmodified poly(vinyl cinnamate). The thermal reaction of cinnamate side groups is closely related to the enhancement of the thermal stability of the liquid crystal orientation of polymer films with polarized UV irradiation.

  • The viewing angle characteristics of amorphous(a)-twisted nematic(TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on poly(vinyl)cinnamate (PVC) surfaces with photo polymerrization were investigated. It was found that the threshold voltage increases with increasing the polymerization of PVC surfaces. That the domain size of a-TN-LCD is affected by the surface crystallization with increasing the photo polymerization of the photo-alignment film. We observed that the viewing angle of a-TN-LCD increased with increasing the photo polymerization on PVC surfaces. Finally, we consider that the viewing angle of a-TN-LCD on PVC surfaces is large compared to a-TN-LCD on polyimide(PI) surface.

  • Poly[(1-(9-carbazoly1)ethylene)-co-(3-cinnamoyloxyoctyl-9-carbazolyl)] ethylene (PVK-Cin) was prepared by tethering cinnamate pendants to a carbazole group via an octylene spacer. The photopatternability of the new PVK based-polymer was investigated using a photocrosslinking reaction under UV light illumination $(\lambda=254nm)$. Blends of the PVK-Cin and a soluble poly(phenylene vinylene) (CzEh-PPV) were employed to study the photocrosslinking behavior. Well resolved lithographic patterns were observed in these polymer systems. PVK-Cin produced a blue light emitting pattern both before and after the photocrosslinking reaction. The blends of PVK-Cin and CzEh-PPV also showed corresponding emissions at 398 and 525 (560) nm in the film state.

  • Photo-alignment layer which contains cinnamate is difficult to generate pretilt angle of liquid crystals. In order to enhance pretilt angle, blending poly (amic acid) between containing fluorine poly (amic acid) and 1,2,3,4-cyclobutanetetracaroxylic dianhydride (CBDA) / 3,5-diaminobenzyl alcohol (DBA) were used. For photoreaction, cinnamate was conjugated by interfacial reaction with blending polyimide.

  • A new photoalignment material PM15CA, poly{N-(phenyl)maleimide-co-3-[4-(pentyloxy) cinnamate]propyl-2-hydroxy-1-methacrylate}, was synthesized and the electro-optical (EO) characteristics in the vertical-aligned (VA) liquid crystal display (LCD) photo-aligned on the photopolymer surface were studied. Excellent voltage-transmittance(V-T) characteristics in the VA-LCD photoaligned with polarized UV exposure of oblique direction on the pohotopolymer surfaces for 1 min can be achieved. The transmittance of the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface decreased with increasing UV exposure time. We suggest that the decrease of transmittance in the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface is attributed to the dissociation of the ester linkage in the photodimerized cinnamate structure with increasing UV exposure time

폴리(실록산 신나메이트)의 광배향 메커니즘 연구 (Photo-Alignment Mechanism Study of Poly(siloxane cinnamate))

  • 신나모일 그룹의 광배향 메커니즘과 공정 조건들과의 관계를 이해하기 위하여 폴리(실록산 신나메이트) (PSCN)를 이용한 광배향 연구를 진행하였다. DSC와 편광현미경 실험에서 PSCN의 등방성 온도는 $105^{\circ}C$ 이상이었으며 액정 온도 구간에서 한 번 배열된 분자들은 저온이나 고온의 등방성 온도 구간에서도 없어지지 않는 열안정성을 보였다. UV/Vis 흡수 실험을 통해서는 광이량화 반응이 주된 광배향 반응이며 신나모일기가 스스로 배열되는 경향이 강하여 광이량화 반응의 효율을 높이는데 기여하지만 광조사가 지나칠 경우 경쟁 관계에 있는 photo-fries 반응이 증가하여 오히려 광배향 성질이 떨어짐을 알 수 있었다. 한편, photo-fries 반응은 UV의 파장을 조절하여 억제할 수 있었다.

  • Poly(p-anol-formaldehyde) cinnamates(AGEFCs) were synthesized to prepare a photo-sensitive polymer which enabled to be photodimerized via 6-center reaction. The photocharacteristics of the mixture of the AGEFCs and a sensitizer after exposure to light was tested. The yield of the residual film, which was closely related to the sensitivity of the film, was affected by the degree of polymerization of the backbone resin, sensitizers and their concentration. AGEFC-3 revealed a good photosensitive effect such as about 73% yield of residual film at 128 min. of exposed time.

  • 액정표시소자의 광배향막으로 적용하기 위하여 올리고머 신나메이트와 폴리(비닐 신나메이트) (PVCi)의 블렌드를 이용하여 그루브 패턴을 형성하고 광배향 특성을 관찰하였다. UV-vis 스펙트럼 분광계를 이용하여 자외선 조사 시간에 따른 광반응 속도를 평가한 결과 올리고머 신나메이트는 폴리(비닐 신나메이트)에 비해 빠른 반응속도를 나타내었다. 폴리(비닐 신나메이트)를 주성분으로 하여 올리고머 신나메이트를 블렌드한 경우 반응속도가 약간 향상되는 특성을 확인하였다. 올리고머 신나메이트는 높은 결정성으로 인해 표면 그루브 패턴을 단독으로 형성할 수 없었지만 폴리(비닐 신나메이트)와의 블렌드를 통하여 그루브 패턴을 형성할 수 있었으며 그루브 패턴에서도 polar plot에 의해 분자 배향성을 나타냄을 확인하였다. 올리고머 신나메이트와 고분자계 신나메이트의 블렌드를 통하여 반응속도의 향상과 박막 구조의 패턴을 형성하기에 적합함의 확인을 통해 새로운 광배향막 재료로 적용 가능함을 알 수 있었다.
