Because of the rapid progress of urbanization in recent decades, the proportion of impervious areas in cities has increased. As a result, hydrological properties of urban streams have changed and non-point pollution sources have increased, that have had considerable influence on human life and ecosystems. To manage these situations, application of non-point pollution reduction facilities and LID facilities are expanding recently. In this study, it is investigated if rainfall interception rate used in design of non-point pollution reduction facilities can be applied to design of LID facilities. For this purpose, EPA SWMM is constructed for part of Noksan National Industrial Complex area wherein long-term observed storm water data can be obtained and storm water interception rates for various design capacities of a bio-retention LID facility reservoirs are estimated. While sensitivity of storm water interception rate according to design specifications of bio-retention facility is not large, sensitivity of storm water interception rate according to regional rainfall characteristics is relatively large. As a result of comparing present rainfall interception rate estimation method with the one proposed in this study, the present method is highly likely to overestimate performance of the bio-retention facility. Finally, a new storm water interception rate formula for bio-retention LID facility is proposed.
Recently the water quality management policy gives priority to management the point source. Non-point pollution source is difficult to comprehend because those don't have certain outflow point and emission. There are many development and research about BMPs for manage the Non-point pollution source. Various methods of removal efficiency are presented for assessment of Best Management Practices (BMPs). In this study, retention time have effect on removal efficiency based on monitoring results of Grassed Swale is studied. Also, Compare a difference according to various methods of Grassed Swale removal efficiency. The result of removal efficiency analysis depending on retention time of Grassed Swale, removal efficiency is higher as retention time increases. To obtain a stable removal efficiency of Grassed Swale, retention time of Grassed Swale should be secure.
Recently the water quality management policy gives priority to management the point source. Point pollution sources have definite emission points and are discharged to one point through a pipe. But Nonpoint pollution source (NPS) has uncertain pathway, pollutant load and runoff characteristics unlike point pollution sources, making them difficult to manage. Thus, the Korea government plans to develop and equip facilities that help reduce NPS so as to manage them more easily. But removal efficiency of Best Management Practice (BMPs) is in influenced by rainfall, hydrologic condition like natural phenomenon, so factors of removal efficiency are difficult. Thus there is a need for multilateral research about many factors that affect removal efficiency for removal facility design of proper non-point pollution. In this research, mapping, vegetation coverage and retention time were investigated in the case of factors that affect removal efficiency in grassed swale, a nature-type non-point removal facility. Grassed swale obtained changed of coverage using Braun-Blanquet within swale and retention time was obtained from point that rainfall effluent enters into swale to the time that first outflow starts. Besides, correlation analysis was obtained using pearson correlation analysis method. As a result, it was shown that removal efficiency increases as retention time is longer in grassed swale and that retention time increases as vegetation coverage is higher.
Retention ponds have been dug along some of the motorways in France to minimize environmental pollution by keeping pollutants from spreading over the surrounding area. In order to study heavy metal pollution and diagenetic behaviour of sediments, eight core samples were collected from the bottom of a retention pond located along the A-71 motorway in Sologne. The metal concentrations in interstitial waters and extractable metal concentrations in sediment layers using sequential chemical extraction method were determined. The depth distributions of Pb, Zn and Cd concentrations in interstitial water and particulate sediments were studied, and distribution coefficients (KD) were also determined to investigate the environmental mobility of these elements. In addition. the index of geoaccumulation and the Fe-normalized enrichment factor were calculated to differentiate the natural accumulation from the anthropogenic pollution. The vertical concentration profiles of heavy metals in core sediments indicate that surface enrichments (0~2 cm) of Pb, Zn, Cd and organic carbon were always observed at each core sample, due to the early diagenesis. However, the major factor contributing to the accumulation of Cd at the sediment surface is attributed to the dissolution of Cd from polluted roadside soil during periods of rainstorms and its subsequent redeposition on the sediment surface after being carried to the retention pond. A comparison of the KD values indiactes that a decrease in the KD values for Pb and Zn was observed with depth while KD values for Cd increase. According to the KD values. the relative mobility of studied metals was determined as following: Mn>Zn>Cd>Pb, for the upper layer, and Mn>Cd>Zn>Pb, for the lower layers.
To evaluate characteristics of water quality in Jeju, a study was implemented for Han stream and retention ponds. Inflow water quality of retention ponds was heavily dependent on precedent rainfall, and no pesticide was detected due to the little artificial pollution sources. A smooth settling efficiency curve was noticed because heavy particles were already settled down in front of the retention pond. There were weak relationships between retention time and water quality, and this can be attributable to high concentration of pollutants influx at peak inflow. In addition, as Han stream retention pond has a role of groundwater recharge, inflow control based on water quality as well as quantity is needed to maximize pollutant removal at the retention ponds.
This study was purposed and performed to evaluate removal efficiency of non-point source pollution in the process and system based on bio-retention design criteria regulated by EPA. Basic Column Reactors (BCR) were prepared for optimal determinations of inflow rate of first rainfall runoff and composition and ratio of soil layers. Removal efficiencies of non-point source pollution from synthetic runoff and real first rainfall runoff, directly sampled from motor way and parking lot, were analyzed, respectively. Removal efficiency of SS, BOD, COD, T-N, and T-P were all shown to be more than 80%.
Retention ponds have been dug along some of the motorways to control water flow during rainstorms and to minmize environmental pollution. A retention pond located at Les Ardilleres about 20km South of Orleans along the A-71 motorway has been selected to evaluate the effectiveness of such a pond as a trap for heavy metals. Based on the "index of geoaccumulation" and the "enrichment factor" normalized to Fe introduced by Muller in 1979 and by Helz in 1976, respectively, the degree of contamination by heavy metals for the roadside soil and the settling particles was evaluated. As expected, the contamination was very severe in the roadside soil, while it was not so great in the settling particles. Using these methods, cadmium anomaly was traced in the settling particles of the retention pond, their occurrence being attributed partly to natural and partly to anthropogenic pollution. The estimated input of heavy metals associated with settling particles to the pond was 0.9 g/day Pb, 2.1 g/day Zn and 6mg/day Cd. A tentative mass balance of Pb and Zn originated by motor vehicles suggested that only 5 to l1% of heavy metals deposited on the surface of the motorway is carried to the retention pond by runoff water ; suggestions are made to improve their efficiency.ve their efficiency.
Stormwater pollution is a major problem in urban areas. Pollutants like heavy metals and harmful chemicals in the runoff can endanger soil and ground water, when they are not sufficiently removed doting infiltration. Strength and infiltration capacity of porous concrete are the major problems that must be considered if permeable pavement system are demanded to be used in a drive way application. In this study, a series of compacted porous concrete mixtures and the system of pavement ate tested for the physical characteristics like compressive strength, flexural strength, unit weight, porosity, water permeability, and the purification capacity of contaminated water. The test results obtained indicate that the strength and infiltration capacity of porous concrete are strongly related to its matrix proportion and compaction energy and providing adequate filter layers underneath pavement surface course is one of the most important design considerations of permeable pavement system for pollution retention purpose.

Korea Government promotes the installation of buffering retention facility to protect the water environment and prevent the environmental contamination event by toxic materials. Although the buffering retention facility is very important to protect the natural environment through the retention of accidental pollution and initial runoff, much study has not been done to suggest the guide line for the design of the facility. In this study, we suggested the rational items for the design of buffering retention facility based on many experts after we investigated and compared the previous results of many design materials.
