Electrolytic polishing is the anodic dissolution process in the transpassive state. It removes non-metallic inclusions and improves mechanical and corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Electrolytic polishing is normally used to remove a very thin layer of material from the surface of a metal object. An electrolyte of phosphoric, sulfuric and distilled water has been used in this study. In the low current density region, there can be found plateau region and material removal process and leveling process occur successively. In this study, an electrochemical polishing process using pulse current is adopted as a new electrochemical polishing process. In electrochemical machining processes, it has been found that pulse electrochemical processes provide an attractive alternative to the electrochemical processes using continuous current. Hence, this study will discuss the electrochemical polishing processes in low current density region and pulse electrochemical polishing.
This paper presents a polishing expert system integrated with sensor information which can modify the polishing sequence and conditions initially determined by the system depending on the on-site polishing status. A practical system using AE sensor to detect the on-line polishing status is developed for the rotational polishing and the smoothly curved sur-face. Database and knowledge base for polishing processes are established by using the results of experiments and also expert's experience. Evaluations are performed for a die of headlight lamp by using both the sensor integrated expert sys-tem and the expert system without sensor. The test results show that the sensor integrated expert system provides more optimal polishing conditions since the proposed system takes advantage of on-line sensor information.
Mirror-like polishing system of hemisphericall high-speed precision bearing for digital VTR drum was developed. Mechamism of the polishing process was analyzed in the view point of polishing contact range and contact length between the tool and the workpiece surface. It was suggested that the two stage polishing process adoptiong the diamond grinding wheel and polishing tool instead of multistage lapping processes, which enables the mass production of the bearing by reduction of polishing time.
Ceramic particles as polishing abrasives are often used in a magnetic abrasive polishing process because they have strong wear resistance. Non-ferromagnetic ceramic abrasives should be mixed with ferromagnetic iron particles for controlling the mixture within a magnetic brush during the polishing process. This study describes the application of the ceramic particles for the magnetic abrasive polishing. The distribution of the magnetic abrasives attached on a tool varies with magnetic flux density and tool rotational speed. From the correlation between abrasive adhesion ratio in the tool and surface roughness produced on a workpiece, practical polishing conditions can be determined. A step-over for polishing a large sized workpiece is able to be selected by a S curve, and an ultrasonic vibration assisted MAP produces a better surface roughness and increases a polishing efficiency.
Die polishing technology is very critical to determine quality and performance of the final products. Die polishing processes have not been automated because the automation requires a great deal of experience and skill of experts. Thus, to implement a fully automated polishing process, the development of polishing status monitoring system replacing the skill of experts is critical. AE is known to be closely related to material removal rate(MRR). As the surface is rougher, MRR gets larger and AE increased. The surface roughness can be indirectly estimated using the AE signal measured during automatic die polishing process. In this study, The polishing state monitoring system using AEms signal was developed. This system can be not only to monitor the abnormal state but also to estimate a state of surface roughness of polishing surface qualitatively.
The polishing tool unit is developed which can be attached on the machining center and automatic polishing system for die and mold is also established. So, experiments are carried out under the several polishing conditions. The polishing properties of automatic polishing operation such as surface roughness, stock removal and maximum profile valley depth are obtained and analyzed quantitatively for each polishing tool. The purpose of this study is to construct an expert system for optimal condition of die and mold automatic polishing using the knowledge base that is obtained in the polishing experiments and, to verify the feasibility of the expert system through the experiments. Using this expert system, unskilled operators will be able to obtain the knowledge and experience of an expert.
Electrolytic polishing is the anodic dissolution process in the transpassive state. It removes non-metallic inclusions and improves mechanical and corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Electrolytic polishing is normally used to remove a very thin layer of material from the surface of a metal object. An electrolyte of phosphoric acid 50% in vol., sulfuric acid 20% in vol. and distilled water 30% in vol. has been used in this study. In this paper, we provide the results of polishing temperature distribution by way of infrared ray measurement system as well as polishing resistance, which can be interpreted as tribological aspects of CMP, using force measurement system. The results include the trend of polishing temperature, its distribution profile and temperature change during polishing. The results indicate that temperature affects greatly to the removal rate. Polishing temperature increases gradually and reaches steady state temperature and the period of temperature change occurs first tens of seconds. Furthermore, the friction force also varies as the same pattern with polishing temperature from high friction to low. These results suggest that the first period of the whole polishing time greatly affects the nonuniformity of removal rate.
Generally, die polishing process occupies about 30 .approx. 50% of the whole die manufacturing time. However, die polshing has not been automated yet, since it needs a great deal of experience and skill. This study aims at development of an expert system for die polishing which gives such optimal parameters as tool and polishing conditions. Through experiments, polishing characteristics such as surface roughness, stock removal and scratch were analyzed quantitatively for each polishing tool, and a knowledge base for the expert system was established. Evaluation tests show that the developed system works well to suggest the optimal polishing conditions and it is very promising.
Polishing process has been applied to get extremely fine surfaces, e.g., mirror surfaces such as optical mirrors, lens, molds and etc. Nowadays not only fine surface quality but also submicron order of dimensional accuracy is required for many applications. To meet the requirements polishing process should be provided with an active control of polishing pressure especially for automation of polishing process. In this paper a study on development of an active polishing pressure control system has been presented. A new type of tool assembly has been developed to facilitate the control. The tool is attached to an axis of a polishing machine with a coil spring and control of the polishing pressure is done by the position control of the axis, which needs no additional actuator. The polishing pressure is successfully measured by the measurement of the spring deformation. Control specifications were quantitatively considered by weighting functions and a controller was designed by using loop-shaping technique based on the no synthesis. Some experiments have been executed on a polishing machine with a PC-NC controller. It is shown that the results were coincident well with the theoretical analyses and satisfied the design specifications.
