Influence of Work Characteristics on the Association Between Police Stress and Sleep Quality

  • Background: Police officers' stress perception, frequency of stressful events (stressors), and police work characteristics may contribute to poor sleep quality through different mechanisms. Methods: We investigated associations of stress severity (measured by stress rating score) and frequency of stressors with sleep quality and examined the influence of police work characteristics including workload, police rank, prior military experience, and shift work on the associations. Participants were 356 police officers (256 men and 100 women) enrolled in the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress Study from 2004 to 2009. A mean stress rating score and mean frequency of stressors occurring in the past month were computed for each participant from the Spielberger Police Stress Survey data. Sleep quality was assessed using the global score derived from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index survey. Linear associations of the stress rating score and frequency of stressors with sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score) were tested. Age, sex, race/ethnicity, and smoking status were selected as potential confounders. Results: The stress rating score was positively and independently associated with poor sleep quality (${\beta}=0.17$, p = 0.002). Only workload significantly modified this association (${\beta}=0.23$, p = 0.001 for high workload group; p-interaction = 0.109). The frequency of stressors was positively and independently associated with poor sleep quality (${\beta}=0.13$, p = 0.025). Only police rank significantly modified the association (${\beta}=0.007$, p = 0.004 for detectives/other executives; p-interaction = 0.076). Conclusion: Both police officers' perception of stress severity and the frequency of stressors are associated with poor sleep quality. Stress coping or sleep promotion regimens may be more beneficial among police officers reporting high workloads.

피로골절 환자에서 골주사 소견과 방사선 소견의 비교 (Radioisotopic and Radiological Evaluation in Patient with Stress Fracture)

  • The stress fracture is a disease caused by and abnormal stress to the normal bone with constant, repeated pull. Early detection of stress fracture plays an important role in treatment and prevention of its complication. Bone scintigraphy was performed to evaluate 18 patients with stress fracture of the lower extremities from May, 1985 to April, 1987, in the Department of Internal Medicine of National Police Hospital. The results were as follows: 1) Seventeen of the 18 cases showed positive bone scans at the initial study performed from 1 week to S months after the onset of symtom. 2) Ten of the 18 patients had findings of stress fracture at the initial X-ray film. Two out of 8 negative case revealed positive findings in the follow-up studies. 3) The bone scans in the 2 cases taken 5 months after the onset of symton; the one showed only slightly increased radiouptake, the other showed no abnormal findings. In conclusion, bone scanning is a more sensitive indicator of early stress fracture than radiologic study. The healing phase is characterized by a gradual decline in radioactivity at the fracture site in concordance with subsidence of symptom.

경찰공무원의 스트레스 관리에 관한 연구 - 의료 및 조직보건 모델을 중심으로 - (A Study on Dealing with the Stress of Police Officer - Focused on Medical Model and Organizational Health Model -)

  • 사람들은 스트레스라고 하면 보통 부정적인 측면만을 생각하곤 하는데 스트레스는 긍정적인 측면도 있고 부정적인 측면도 있다. 긍정적이든 부정적이든 스트레스는 변화로부터 기인한다. 변화는 삶에 있어서 필연적인 것이다. 결국 사람들은 어쩔 수 없이 스트레스를 경험할 수밖에 없다. 경찰이라는 직업은 업무 특성상 스트레스를 많이 받는 직업들 중의 하나이다. 경찰업무는 신체적${\cdot}$감정적인 긴장 상태에 이르게 함으로써 경찰공무원들의 스트레스를 유발시킨다. 위험, 좌절, 과도한 업무부담, 가족 및 동료 그리고 주민들의 이해 부족은 경찰공무원의 스트레스를 유발시키는 요인이 된다. 그렇기 때문에 뉴욕에 본부를 둔 미국 스트레스 연구소는 경찰을 스트레스가 가장 많은 10개 직업들 중 하나로 선정하기도 했다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 의료 모델과 조직보건 모델의 관점에서 경찰공무원의 스트레스 관리방안을 제시하였다. 의료 모델에서는 경찰공무원 개인적 차원에서 제거, 대처, 상담을 통한 스트레스 관리방안을 제시하였으며, 조직보건 모델에서는 경찰관리자의 차원에서 첫째, 인사제도의 합리화, 둘째, 복지 증진, 셋째, 경찰조직의 민주적 운영, 넷째, 원만한 대민관계 유지, 다섯째, 경찰공무원 가족을 위한 스트레스 관리 프로그램 개발 등을 제시하였다.

여자 경찰 기동대원의 직무 스트레스, 건강증진행위와 삶의 질의 관련성 (Association of Job Stress and Health Promotion Behaviors with Quality of Life among Female Riot Police Officers)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of job stress and health promotion behaviors with the quality of life in female riot police officers. Methods: A cross-sectional design was adopted, and a convenience sample of 182 female riot police officers from 5 Metropolitan Police Agencies in South Korea. All participants completed a self-administered survey questionnaire that assessed job stress, health promotion behavior, and quality of life in May 2018. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, analysis of variance, and correlation and multiple linear regression analyses, all of which were executed using SPSS/WIN 23.0 and STATA 13.0. Results: The level of job stress among participants was moderate, and the mean was 45.25 out of a maximum possible score of 100. The mean scores that emerged for health promotion behaviors and the quality of life were 2.62 (maximum=4) and 56.59 (maximum=100), respectively. Job stress (r=-.380, p<.001) and health promotion behaviors (r=.559, p<.001) were correlated with the quality of life. The statistically significant predictors of the quality of life were job stress (${\beta}=-.212$, p=.001) and health promotion behaviors (${\beta}=.417$, p<.001). Conclusion: The variables that were associated with the quality of life of female riot police officers were job stress and health promotion behaviors. Therefore, interventions that can enhance job stress management and health promotion behaviors are needed to improve the quality of life of female riot police officers.

Exploring Stress Levels, Job Satisfaction, and Quality of Life in a Sample of Police Officers in Greece

  • Background: The ongoing economic crisis in Greece has affected both stress and quality of life (QoL) at all socioeconomic levels, including professionals in the police force. The aim of this study was to examine perceived stress, job satisfaction, QoL, and their relationships in a sample of police officers in Greece. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted during the first trimester of 2011 in 23 police stations in the greater Athens area. A total of 201 police officers agreed to participate (response rate 44.6%). The General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) was used to assess general health, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF Questionnaire and Perceived Stress Scale-14 (PSS-14) questionnaires were used to assess QoL and perceived stress, respectively. Results: The PSS and GHQ subscales and total scores exhibited strong, positive, and significant correlations coefficients (r): 0.52 for somatic disturbances, 0.56 for stress and insomnia, 0.40 for social dysfunction, and 0.37 for depression, yielding an r equal to 0.57 for the total GHQ score. A higher level of perceived stress was related to a lower likelihood of being satisfied with their job; in this regard, male participants and higher ranked officers reported lower job satisfaction. The PSS and GHQ scores were inversely, consistently, and significantly related to almost all of the QoL aspects, explaining up to 34% of their variability. Parenthood had a positive effect on QoL related to physical health, and women reported lower QoL related to psychological health. Conclusion: Higher levels of stress are related to an increased risk of reporting suboptimal job satisfaction and QoL. The magnitude of these associations varied depending on age, gender, and rank, highlighting the need for stress-management training.

The Effectiveness of the 'One-Table One-Flower' Program on Job Stress Management of Police Officials

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of flower decorations on job stress and stress copying style of police officers. Flower decorations were done in the form of "one-table one-flower", in which flowers were placed on each desk in the office space. By analyzing color psychology, we first identified the symbolism of color, and selected the cut flowers in the same color. We selected six types of flowers in six colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Each Monday morning, the flower decorations were delivered to the police station. We selected 50 subjects who wanted to keep flowers on their desks every week as the experimental group and 44 subjects who only wanted to participated in the assessment as the control group. Before and after the program, we examined the mean difference between the control group and experimental group. After six sessions of the program, there was a significant difference in job stress (p < .001) and stress copying style (p = .049) of the experimental group compared to the control group. Therefore, this study proved that having flower decorations in an office space is effective for the psychological stability of police officers that are highly stressed, due to sensory stimulations from the colors and scents of flowers as well as mutual interaction as they take care of the flowers.

경찰관의 외상성 사건 경험이 외상후 스트레스 증상에 미치는 영향에 있어 스트레스 대처양식의 매개효과 (The Mediating Effect of Stress Management Format on Influence Over Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on Traumatic Case Experience of Police Officers)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 외상성 사건 경험이 외상 후 스트레스 장애에 미치는 영향에 있어서 스트레스 대처양식의 매개효과를 알아보고자 하는데 있다. 연구목적을 달성하기 위해 제주지역 경찰관서 4개소에서 경찰관을 대상으로 총 297명의 사례를 분석하였다. 연구가설을 검증하기 위하여 Baron & kenny의 회귀분석 4단계를 거쳐 매개 효과를 검증하였고, Sobel Test를 실시하여 매개효과에 대한 유의도를 검증하였다. 외상성 사건 경험 이후 외상 후 스트레스 장애 증상의 발현 사이의 경로를 확인함으로써 적절한 외상 후 스트레스 장애에 대한 개입 프로그램을 설정하는데 도움을 주고, 궁극적으로 제주지역 경찰관들이 외상 후 스트레스에서 벗어나 긍정적이고 역동적인 근무 환경을 조성하는데 도움을 줄 것이다.

수사경찰의 외상 후 스트레스 장애 경험이 조직몰입에 미치는 영향 -대구지역 수사경찰관을 대상으로- (Effects of PTSD Experience on Organization Commitment in Korea Investigation Police)

  • 최근 발생하고 있는 범죄는 심각하고 흉포화 되었다. 이러한 특성은 그 범죄를 수사하는 경찰에게도 심각한 영향을 미치고 있다. 이러한 범죄를 접하는 경찰관도 인간이기 때문에 심리적인 미칠 수 있다. 실제로 많은 수사관련 경찰관이 큰 사건을 겪은 이후 수사 부서를 떠나거나, 경찰직을 그만두고 있다. 이러한 문제에 대하여 본 연구에서는 외상 후 스트레스 장애(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; PTSD)가 실제 경찰관에게 미치는 영향을 살펴보고 이러한 영향이 조직몰입에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구에서는 과각성, 회피, 침습, 수면장애를 외상 후 스트레스 장애의 하위영역으로 설정하고, 조직몰입을 정서적 몰입, 지속적 몰입, 규범적 몰입으로 하위영역으로 나누었다. 측정을 위하여 만들어진 설문지는 대구지방경찰청 소속 경찰관 중 수사경과를 가지고 있는 형사부서 경찰관을 대상으로 설문을 실시하여 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 외상 후 스트레스 장애의 하위요인 중 침습이 정서적 몰입에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 회피는 지속적 몰입에 유의미한 영향을 미친다고 나타났고, 침습과 회피는 규범적 몰입에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

경찰공무원의 직무스트레스 정도와 건강증진 행위와의 관련성 (The relationship between the level of job stress and health promotion behavior with police officier)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate health behavior, job stress of police officer in Korea. Methods: It was a descriptive study, and subjects were comprised 135 police officer by reported questionnaires. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA(Sheffe's test), and Pearson's correlation using SPSS/WIN 22.0. Results: The job stress level of the subjects was 41.30 and Dietary practice guideline score was 4.52, moderate activity practice day was 2.48, waling practice day was 3.87. There was a significant difference in the job stress among the characteristics of the subjects according to their work experience and position. Health promoting behaviors and job stress were negatively correlated with dietary practice guideline score and moderate exercise practice days, and positive correlation between smoking and drinking. Conclusion: Based on this study, it is necessary to develop a health program that can reduce the job stress of the subject and solve the job stress healthily.

전의경 구타근절대책이 부대적응에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Preventive Measurements on Military Life Adjustment Mediated by Stress)

  • 이 연구는 전의경의 부대적응의 원인을 밝히는 데 있어 전의경 부대의 구타근절대책이 스트레스 변인을 통해 부대적응에 이르는지를 구조방정식분석을 사용하여 파악하는 데 그 주된 목적을 두었다. 연구에 사용된 자료는 2011년 울산지방경찰청 소속 전의경 전원에 대한 조사 데이터이다. 구조방정식 분석결과, 스트레스를 통한 매개효과는 p<.001 수준에서 통계적으로 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 표준화 회귀계수를 통해 효과크기를 확인한 결과, 스트레스가 부대적응에 미치는 영향력이 부대의 구타근절대책의 영향력 보다 더 더 컸다. 즉, 부대의 구타근절대책이 전의경의 부대적응에 긍정적인 영향을 주지만, 전의경의 부대적응력은 부대의 구타근절대책 보다 개인이 느끼는 스트레스 요인이 더 커다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이를 통해 경찰당국은 전의경이 겪는 스트레스가 부대적응도를 결정할 수 있는 원인임을 인지하고, 이에 대한 대안을 마련하여야 한다.
