A study on the Deformation of Variable Reactor / Capacitor for High-frequency Welder Due to the Change on the Velocity of Coolant (냉각수 유속 변화에 따른 고주파 용접기용 가변 리엑터 / 커패시터의 변형에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, variable reactor and capacitor for high-frequency welder are analyzed by optimum design. As the polar panel of high-frequency welder has the role of condenser, the material with the high rate of induced electricity has to be selected in order to manufacture the condenser with the great power cut. And the area of polar panel must be large and the gap between panels must be thin. On the contrary, the resistance is generated and the heat is happened because the large current is flown. To prevent the thermal deformation of this polar panel, the temperature can be lowered by using cooling water and so on. At this point, the speed of cooling water due to deformation and temperature of polar panel can be optimized.

Importance of Polar Phytoplankton for the Global Environmental Change (전 지구 환경변화에 대한 극지 식물플랑크톤의 중요성)

  • There are increasing evidences of climate change in the Antarctic and Arctic Oceans, especially elevated temperature due to the continuous burning of the fossil fuels and ultraviolet B(UV-B) flux within the ozone hole. Light-dependent, temperature-sensitive, and fast-growing organisms respond to these physical and biogeochemical changes. Polar marine phytoplankton, which are pioneer endemic species and important carbon contributors in the polar waters, are therefore highly suitable biological indicators of such changes. By virtue of light requirement, the primary producers are exposed to extreme seasonal fluctuations in temperature, photosynthetically active radiation, and UV radiation. Local environmental warming and increased UV-B radiation during ozone depletion may have profound effects on the primary producers that are primary carbon producers in the polar water. Small changes in climate temperature and solar radiation may have profound effects on the activity threshold of the polar phytoplanktion. To demonstrate biological response to the environmental changes, standardized representative natural and biological parameters are needed so that replicate samples (including controls) can be taken over extended periods of time. In this paper, we review general characteristics of polar phytoplankton, their environment, environmental changes in the polar waters, the effects on the environmental changes to the polar phytoplankton, and the importance of the polar phytoplankton to understand the global environmental changes. Length and Weight Relationship for Two Dominant Antarctic Notothenioid Fishes Caught in the Coastal Water off King Sejong Station, King George Island, Antarctica (남극, 킹조지섬, 세종과학기지 연안에 우점하는 남극암치아속 어류 두 종의 길이와 무게의 관계)

  • Length and weight relationship (LWR) for dominant Antarctic fishes was determined in two species of the family Nototheniidae; black rockcod (Notothenia coriiceps) and marbled rockcod (Notothenia rossii). Samples were caught in the offshore sea around King Sejong station located on King George Island, Antarctica in January, 2017. A total of 30 N. coriiceps and 7 N. rossii were caught by fishing rod and hook. Average total length was 266.0 mm for N. coriiceps and 275.4 mm for N. rossii. Average total weight was 283.1g for N. coriiceps and 290 g for N. rossii. In terms of LWR and b value, the results showed that both two species had positive allometries (b>3) in good health. This size information of two dominant Antarctic fishes would be useful for future physiological studies to understand of adaptation mechanism and biological pathway of Antarctic marine organisms.

Metal Concentrations in some Brown Seaweeds from Kongsfjorden on Spitsbergen, Svalbard Islands (스발바드군도 스피츠베르겐섬 콩스피요르드에 서식하는 갈조류의 중금속 농도)

  • Concentrations of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn were determined in four arctic brown algae (Laminaria saccharina, L. digitata, Alaria esculenta, Desmarestia aculeata) in an attempt to examine for their metal accumulation capacity and also to assess their contamination levels. Macroalgae were collected from shallow subtidal waters (<20m) of Kongsfjorden (Kings Bay) on Spitsbergen during the period of the late July to early August 2003. Metal concentrations highly varied between sampling sites, species and tissue parts. Input of melt-water laden with terrigenous sediment particles seemed to have a large influence on baseline accumulations of some metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Pb etc.) in the macroalgae, causing a significant spatial variation. There were also significant concentration differences between the young and old tissue parts in L. saccharina, L. digitata and A. esculenta. While Al, Fe, Mn, Pb were higher in the perennial parts (stipes and holdfast below meristematic region), Cd and As concentrations were significantly higher in the young blades above the meristematic region. Zn and Cr, on the other hand, showed little differences between the tissue parts. The highest metal concentrations were found in D. aculeata, which seems to be due to its filamentous fine branches leading to high surface/volume ratios. The lowest concentrations were found in the two Laminaria spp., the blades of which are thicker than D. aculeata and A. esculenta. No distinct signs of contamination were detected in the brown algal species analyzed. Added to this, the results of the present studies suggest the potential utility of L. saccharina, L. digitata and A. esculenta as biomonitors for metal pollution monitoring in this area.

Distribution of Antarctic Sea Ice from Satellite Altimetry in the Weddell Sea: Preliminary Results

  • We investigated the distribution of sea ice using Topex/Poseidon (T/P) and ERS-1 .ada. altimeter data in the northwest Weddell Sea, Antarctica, between the area $45-75^{\circ}W\;and\;55-66^{\circ}S$. Using the Geo_Bad_1 flag of the Merged GDR of the T/P, we classified the surface into ocean, land, and sea. Total 257 cycles of altimeter measurements between Oct. 1992 and Sep. 1999 (for nearly 2570 days) were used to analyze the distribution of the Antarctic sea ice. We then calculated the surface area of ice coverage using SUTM20 map projection to monitor the periodic variations. Each year, the maximum and minimum coverage of the sea ice were found in late August and February in the study area, respectively. We also studied the sea ice distribution using ERS-1 altimeter data between $45-75^{\circ}W\;and\;55-81.5^{\circ}S$ to compare with the T/P Using the Valid/Invalid flag of the Ocean Product, we analyzed the sea ice distribution between March and August of 1995, which showed very good coherence with the T/P measurements. Our preliminary results showed that the altimeter measurements can be effectively used to monitor the distribution of the sea ice in the polar region. However, the size of radar footprint, typically 2-6km depending on the roughness of the sea surface, may be too big to monitor the sharp boundary between ice and water/land. If more other altimeter mission data with dense coverage such as Geosat GM are analyzed together, this limitation can be significantly improved. If we also combine other microwave remote sensing data such as radiometer, and SSM/I, the result will be significantly enhanced.

GPR investigation of glacier on Livingstone Island, Antarctica. (GPR을 이용한 리빙스톤섬 빙하층 탐사)

  • With the aim of global environmental monitoring we carried out GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) surveys at the Livingstion Island in Antarctica. Research area is near the Mt. Charra (340m) in Livingston Island which is located 80 km to the southwest of the King Sejong Station. We have collected 5 lines of GPR data. Two kinds of survey, CMP (Common Midpoint) surveys and common offset profiles, were performed. We classified the glacier into the three layers using electromagnetic velocity of the ice and reflection characteristic, The depth of glacier reached about $80{\~}110\;m$. Some reflectors showed the evidence of the water filled englacial drainage and volcanic ash-layers.

Underwater Acoustic Environment and Low Frequency Acoustic Transmission in the Sub-Polar Front Region of the East Sea (동해 아극전선 해역의 수중음향환경 및 저주파 음파전달 양상)

  • To investigate low frequency acoustic transmissions in the Sub-Polar Front(SPF) of the East Sea, numerical experiments are conducted with Range dependent Acoustic Model(RAM) using Circulation Research of the East Asian Marginal Seas(CREAMS) data and Autonomous Profiling Explorer(APEX)) data. Significant seasonal variations of sea water properties are existed across the Sub-Polar Front(SPF) region from the north and the south. The model results show that Transmission Loss(TL) decrease(about 20dB) with ideal front in the warm region whereas TL increase(about 25dB) with ideal front in the cold region. Regardless of season(both in summer and winter), when the sound source is located in the cold region of the SPF, the model results show weak TL, compared to the case of the source in the warm region(Maximum difference of TL reaches 28dB). This difference between the cases when the source is located in the cold region and the warm region, is accounted for from the different vertical profiles of sound speed in both regions.

Nutrient Depletion and Primary Productivity in the Marginal Ice Zone of the Northwestern Weddell Sea During Austral Summer

  • Spatial distributions of phytoplankton biomass and nutrients were examined to investigate the magnitude of phytoplankton blooms along the marginal ice zone (MIZ) in the northwestern Weddell Sea during austral summer of 1995. High phytoplankton biomass was associated with the MIZ in the study area. Vertical stability induced by meltwater appears to be the most important factor controlling phytoplankton biomass distribution. Nitrate concentrations are significantly depleted within the upper water column at the phytoplankton biomass maximum. The time required to attain the observed nutrient depletion was calculated from phytoplankton biomass and nitrate depletion, which ranges from 27 to 68 days in transect 4 and from 33 to 145 days in transect 3. Phytoplankton production was also calculated from nitrate depletion and time-scales of nitrate depletion, which varies from 272 to 1752 mg C m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ in transect 4 and from 327 to 2648 mg C m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ in transect 3. In the Southern Ocean where primary productivity shows large temporal and spatial variations, the productivity measurement from nutrient depletion can provide an average rate of primary production during phytoplankton bloom.

Polar Anchoring Strength and Surface Ordering in NLC by the Washing Process on Rubbed Polymer Surfaces Containing Trifluoromethyl Moiety

  • The polar anchoring strength and surface ordering in a NLC,4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface containing trifluoromethyl moiety were studied. The large extrapolation length de of 5CB for washing process of water was measured at RS=114 mm. The polar anchoring energy of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface is decreased by the washing process. Also, the polar anchoring energy of 5CB increases with the rubbing strength on the PI surface. The surface ordering of 5CB for all washing processes is smaller than the non-washing process; it is attributed to the washing process.

Flux Footprint Climatology and Data Quality at Dasan Station in the Arctic (북극 다산기지에서의 플럭스 발자취 기후도와 플럭스 자료 품질)

  • Turbulent fluxes of heat, water vapor, and CO2 have been measured since August, 2003 at Dasan Station (78o 55’ N, 11o50’E) in the Arctic. These data can allow us to better understand the interactions between the Polar ecosystems and the atmosphere together with those at King Sejong Station in the Antarctic. Due to the buildings and measurement platforms around the flux tower, it is required to evaluate how they influence measured flux data. By using one-year turbulence statistics data and footprint model, flux footprint climatology was analyzed together with data availability. The upwind distance of source area ranged from 150 to 300 m, where the buildings and measurement platforms existed. However, flow distortion due to them may be not a major factor to reduce the data availability significantly. Based on, the dominant wind direction of SW and footprint climatology, the location of flux tower is considered suitable for flux measurement.
