  • This study is to investigate an effective instruction for female students in an engineering classroom through gender -sensitive teaching strategies by analysing recorded classroom instruction, reflective journals of professor, and mentoring instructions of A professor teaching "non-steel materials and design" in an engineering classroom. This study which used a qualitative approach for data collection and analysis showed changes of A professor in his way of teaching. The changes are: making rough lesson plan ${\rightarrow}$ making detailed lesson plan being satisfied with his teaching skills ${\rightarrow}$ trying to improve his teaching skills, using negative feedback ${\rightarrow}$ using positive feedback, pointing weaknesses as pre-engineers ${\rightarrow}$ providing detailed information needed to be engineers. This paper deals with the theory comparison between a conventional engineering education and new engineering education, in which conventional models may fail to give satisfactory results. Finally, we provide real application examples to evaluate the feasibility and generality of the proposed method in this paper.

  • In recent years, driver information systems (DIS's) became popular and the use of DIS's increased significantly. A majority of DIS's provides touch-screen interfaces because of intuitiveness of the interaction and the flexibility of interface design. In many cases, touch-screen interfaces are mainly manipulated by fingers. In this case, investigating the effect of touch-key sizes on usability is known to be one of the most important research issues, and lots of studies address the effect of touch-key size for mobile devices or kiosks. However, there is few study on DIS's. The importance of touch-key size study for DIS's should be emphasized because it is closely related to safety issues besides usability issues. In this study, we investigated the effect of touch-key sizes of DIS's while simulated driving (0, 50, and 100km/h) considering driving safety (lateral deviation, velocity deviation, total glance time, mean glance time, total time between glances, mean number of glances) and usability of DIS's (task completion time, error rate, subjective preference, NASA TLX) simultaneously. As a result, both of driving safety and usability of DIS's increased as driving speed decreased and touch-key size increased. However, there were no significant differences when touch-key size is larger than a certain level (in this study : 17.5mm).

  • Since artificial space objects are observable only in a short period of time and the characteristics of their motion is not exactly predictable, it is difficult to obtain both photometric and spectroscopic data by a set of observations. We have, therefore, designed a mount to load multi-optical instruments on the Kyung Hee University (KHU) satellite tracking and observation system for both photometric and spectroscopic observations of artificial space objects. In this paper, we have calculated the deformation of the remodeled mount using structural analyses for the loading of the multi-optical instruments. We have also deduced pointing errors of the mount occurring at tracking and observing artificial space objects. we have derived tracking reliably artificial space objects in our field of view and confirmed structural safety test of mount utilizing equivalent (von-mises) stress distribution.

  • With the rapid development of wireless communications and mobile technologies, requirements of various services based on moving objects like location-based services and mobile applications services have been increased. In this paper, we propose an index structure which can improve the performance on trajectory-based query especially, one of the various query types for moving objects in mobile applications. It maintains link table(L-Table) to obtain good efficiency on retrieval and insertion performance of the existing TB(Trajectory Bundle)-tree proposed for trajectory-based query of moving objects. The L-Table contains page number in disk and memory pointers pointing the leaf node with the first and last line segment of moving objects in order to directly access preceding node. In addition, we design to reside a part of whole index in main memory by preserving a fixed size of buffer in case of being restricted by available main memory. Finally, experimental results with various data sets show that the proposed technique is superior to the existing index structures with respect to insertion and trajectory-based query.

  • Objectives : Mild Alzheimer's disease(AD) is uncertain to be related to visuospatial working memory subsystem dysfunction. We used the self ordered pointing test(SOPT) to find the characteristics of visuospatial working memory in mild AD. Methods : We compared the visuospatial working memory abilities of 20 patients with mild AD and 20 normal elderly controls(NC) using SOPT, of which stimuli consisted of two stimuli types(A : abstract, C : concrete) and two stimuli numbers(8 and 12). Therefore, working memory was tested using C8, C12, A8, and A12 stimuli conditions in SOPT. Mixed-model ANOVA was conducted with the AD and NC groups as between-subjects factor, with stimuli types and stimuli numbers as the within-subjects factors and with SOPT error rates as the dependent variable. Results : The AD group showed higher error rates in SOPT than the NC group. The NC group showed low error rates in concrete stimuli than in abstract stimuli and in small stimuli numbers than in large stimuli numbers. And the AD group showed no differences between stimuli types or stimuli numbers. Conclusion : AD patients showed a poor performance in visuospatial working memory using concrete stimuli. The result suggests that there is a non-transformation from visual input to phonological working memory in AD. Patients with AD showed a poor performance although in small stimuli number condition of SOPT. It suggests that in AD, visuospatial working memory is not working well although in low central executive loads.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences in the understanding level of the Korean traditional seasonal customs during summer (i.e. Buddha's birthday, Dano festival, Yudu festival and Chilseok) before and after the execution of a educational program concerning seasonal customs and determine if elementary school teachers recognize a need for this kind of educational program. The subjects of this study were 168 students in the 4th grade at two elementary schools (84 students each for the experiment group and the control group) and 249 teachers at the elementary schools in Yangju city. The major results of this study are as follows : First, it was shown that there is no significant difference in the understanding level of seasonal customs between the experiment group and the control group in the pre-test, but after carrying out the educational program, it was indicated that there is a statistically significant difference between the experiment group and the control group in the post-test. Second, in addition to strongly pointing out the necessity of seasonal customs education, the teachers recognized that it is desirable to teach seasonal customs to students through the discretionary activity class corresponding to the seasonal divisions in the year and that it is especially important to perform the educational activity through traditional plays and to utilize audio-visual media. Also, teachers hoped that a seasonal customs program suitable for elementary school students would be required, along with the development of instructional materials, and finally that the schools need to further develop teacher training through field inspections and practice.

  • In this paper, we describe a software implementation of a digital TV stream analyzer that can be used for analyzing and verifying digital TV bitstreams on personal computes. It accepts as input MPEG-2 transport streams (TS's) already stored on hard disks and doesn't require any special hardware. After classifying TS packets into program specific information(PSI) TS section auido, video, program clock reference (PCR) private data and null packets, it displays their contents through a graphic user interface along with the syntax elements of the TS header. Also it displays the decoded I frame nearest in time axis the TS packet currently shown This feature helps pin pointing the specific location of problematic parts in bitstreams. The bitsteam analyzer provides the compliance test of MPEG-2 Systems standard and the data injection functionality with which one can easily insert additional data to existing MPEG-2 bitstreams. Using the resulting system one can produce at low test streams for interactive broadcasting and data broadcasting for laboratory use.

  • A linguistic element found in a movie, dialogue, plays a critical role in building up narrative structure. Still, analyses conducted on movies mostly focus on images due to the nature of a movie that conveys a story through its visual images while dialogue has either been underestimated or received less spotlight despite their importance. This study highlights the significance of lines in a movie. This study calls attention to dialogue, which has stayed out of the main focus and been on the periphery thus far when analyzing movies, so as to see how they contribute to constructing a narrative. It then spotlights the significance of dialogue in the movie. To this end, the study sorts out emotional expressions articulated by actors through their dialogues then to make polarity classification into affirmation and negation, followed by a quantitative analysis of how the polarity proportion of emotional expressions changes depending on the narrative structure. The study also suggests a narrative's relevance with emotions by pointing to dynamic emotional changes that shift between affirmation and negation depending on incidents, conflicts and resolution thereof throughout a movie.
