  • In IEEE 802.11b, Medium Access Control Sublayer consists of DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function). DCF provides contention based services and PCF provides contention free services for QoS satisfaction. DCF uses CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) as an access protocol. And PCF uses Polling Scheme. In this paper, a modified New-PCF, which gives weights to channels with heavier traffic load, was suggested. NS-2 simulations were conducted to compare the service performances with original DCF, PCF and the modified New-PCF respectively. Simulation results has shown the increased overall throughput with the proposed New-PCF compared with other cases.

  • The success of the IEEE 802.11 standard has prompted research into efficiency of the different medium access methods and their support for different traffic types. A modified version of the point coordination function (PCF) called modified PCF has been introduced as a way to improve the efficiency over the standard method. It has been shown through a simulation study and a mathematical analysis that channel utilization can be much improved compared to the standard, in case there is no so-called hidden station problem. However, under the hidden station problem, the efficiency of the modified PCF would obviously decrease. In this paper, some enhancements of the modified PCF are introduced. Firstly, we propose a retransmission process to allow frames involved in collisions to be retransmitted. Then, we propose a collision resolution mechanism to reduce the frame collision probability due to the hidden station problem. In addition, we propose a priority scheme to support prioritization for different traffic types such as interactive voice and video, and real-time data traffic in the modified PCF. To prevent the starvation of one low priority traffic, minimum transmission period is also guaranteed to each traffic type via an admission control algorithm. We study the performance of the modified PCF under the hidden station problem and the performance of the modified PCF with priority scheme through simulations. To illustrate the efficiency of the priority scheme, we therefore compare its simulation results with those of some standardized protocols: The distributed coordination function (DCF), the enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA), the PCF, and our previously proposed protocol: The modified PCF without priority scheme. The simulation results show that the increment of delay in the network due to the hidden station problem can be reduced using the proposed collision resolution mechanism. In addition, in a given scenario the modified PCF with priority scheme can provide better quality of service (QoS) support to different traffic types and also support a higher number of data stations than the previous proposals.

  • IEEE 802.11 Point Coordination Function (PCF) mode is defined to support time bounded traffic, such as voice in wireless LANs. The poll scheduling plays an important role in IEEE 802.11 PCF mode operation. This paper proposed a Multicast Polling Scheme (MPC) to increase the performance of wireless LANs. Moreover, we proposed a polling schedule scheme for our proposed multi-poll to serve real-time traffic. The results show that the proposed mechanism is more efficient than the original IEEE 802.11 PCF.

  • The DCF (Dcistributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function) are the basic MAC (Medium Access Control) protocols of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. According to the DCF, each node performs the exponential backoff algorithm before the transmission of its data frame. Each node doubles the backoff waiting time before the transmission of its data frame whenever it detects the transmission collision with other nodes. Therefore, as the number of the active nodes having the data frames to transmit increases, the overall MAC performance of the DCF decreases. On the other hand, according to the PCF, each node is granted the transmission opportunity by which the PCF transmission is possible without the collision with other nodes. Therefore, as the number of the active nodes increases, the MAC performance of the PCF increases, In this paper, considering the tradeoff of MAC performance between the DCF and PCF, a hybrid MAC protocol is proposed to enhance the performance of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs.

  • PCF(Point Coordination Function) of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is an access method oat generally has better performance under high offered load conditions. And it is also appropriate for sending data of time-limited applications. In this paper we consider the QoS(Quality of Service) enhancement method according to the change of nodes in the IEEE 802.11 WLAN. We assume that the un consists or QoS nodes and non-QoS nodes. The QoS nodes has a mechanism to support QoS. we can find the appropriate network parameters by many simulations. And the changes of network status are considered according to the number of nodes.

  • Ad Hoc 네트워크는 단말간 채널 경쟁을 통해 데이터 패킷을 전송하는 DCF(Distributed Coordination Function)에 기반을 둔다. DCF는 단말의 수가 많아질수록 충돌 확률이 증가하여 성능이 급격하게 감소한다. 성능 향상을 위해 DPCF(Distributed Point Coordination Function) 방법이 제안되었다.

  • The distributed coordination function (DCF) and point coordination function (PCF) protocols are the basic MAC protocols for legacy IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11e, IEEE 802.11g and IEEE 802.11n wireless LANs. When the DCF protocol is used for the various versions of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, the MAC performance seriously degrades due to the collisions among the stations (STAs) as more and more STAs attempt to transmit their data frames. On the other hand, the PCF MAC performance becomes poor when many STAs exist in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, however, only small number of STAs actually attempt to transmit their data frames. In this paper, we propose the algorithm for improving the MAC performance by selectively using the DCF and PCF protocols according to the state of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. Numerical examples are presented to show the MAC performance improvement by the selective use of the DCF and PCF protocols according to the network state.

  • This paper studies the rapid design and implementation of the medium access control(MAC) and related interface circuits for 802.11 wireless LANs based on the field programmed gate ar-ray(FPGA) technology. Our design is thus aimed to support both the distributed coordination function (DCF) and the point coordination function(PCF) with the aid of FPGA technology. Further-more, in an infrastructure network, some stations may serve as the access points (APs) which may function like a learning bridge. This paper will also discuss how to design for such application. The hardware of the MAC and interface may at least consist of three major parts: wireless transmission and reception processes and in-terface, host(bus) interface, and the interface to the distributed system (optional). Through the increasing popularity of FPGA de-sign, this paper presents how Complex Programmable Logic De-vices(CPLD) can be utilized for speedy design of prototypes. It also demonstrates that there is much room for low-cost hardware prototype design to accelerate the processing speed of the MAC control function and for field testing.

  • IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) adopts Power Saving Mode(PSM) to save the power. Unlike existing PSM, this paper proposes a new scheme for the power saving of the Mobile Host(MH) when a MH performs the data transmission after the competition-based DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) and competition free-based PCF(Point Coordination Function). In this paper, The proposed scheme estimates the distance between the MH with the authority of data transmission and the Access Point(AP) and then adaptively controls the power of the MH considering the distance. Through the simulation result, we find that the proposed scheme consumes the smaller transmission power and has the similar success rate of packet transmission when it is compared to the existing scheme which uses the same power without the consideration of the distance.

  • A modified PCF(Point Coordination Function) protocol with the optimal polling sequence is defined in detail and shown to improve the efficiency of the conventional PCF protocol in IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard. The problem for the optimal polling sequence is formulated as TSP(Travelling Salesman Problem) with the distance values of 1's or 0's. Numerical examples show that the optimal polling sequence increases the capacity of the real-time service such as VoIP(Voice over Internet Protocol).
