  • Traditional spinning systems have reached profitability limits in developed countries due to high production costs and low system productivity. Pneumatic spinning is seen as a developing system, because productivity is much higher than conventional systems. This study evaluates one of the main problems to increase productivity in pneumatic spinning, where air mass-flow is dragged by the drafting cylinders. This flow interacts with the incoming fibres deviating them from their expected path. Via laser anemometry, airflow velocity distribution around drafting cylinders has been measured and it has been found that vorticity is created at the cylinder's inlet. Extensive CFD simulation on the air flow dragged by the cylinders has given a clear insight into the vortex created, producing valuable information on how cylinder design affects the vorticity created. Several drafting cylinder designs have been tested without giving any improvement in productivity. However, the use of a drafting cylinder with holes in it produced good results to the problem of air currents, strongly reducing them and therefore allowing a sharp increase in yarn quality, as well as an increase in productivity. An extensive study on vortex kinematics has been undertaken, bringing with it a better understanding of vortex creation, development and breakdown.

  • This paper is concerned with the position control of the ond degree-of freedom manipulator using pneumatic artificial muscle actuator which is built to have a proper compliance. For t his pneumatic artificial muscle actuator though, it is difficult to make an effective control scheme due to the nonlinearity and uncertainties on the dynamics of the actuator. In this paper, a third-order equation of motion is derived for the actuator including the dynamics of the pneumatic servovalve. Later, various modeling uncertainties due to the nonlinearity and unmodeled dynamics of the servo vlave and the actuator are taken care of, as a trade-off between the closed-loop performance of the controlled system and its robustness to uncertainties. A controller using .mu. synthesis thchnique is designed, and robust performance against measurement noise, various modeling uncertainties due to the dynamics of the servo valve and actuator is achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed control methods is illustrated through simulations and experiments.

  • This paper is the first of two companion papers concerning the analysis and design of a pneumatic vibration isolation system. The design optimization of the pneumatic vibration isolation system is required for the reduction of cost, endeavor and time, and it needs modeling and calculation algorithm. The nonlinear models are devised from the fluid mechanical expression for components of the system and the calculation algorithm is derived from the mathematical relationship between the models. It is shown that the orifice makes the nonlinear property of the transmissibility curve that the resonant frequency changes by the amplitude of excited vibration. Linearization of the nonlinear models is tried to reduce elapsed time and truncation error accumulation and to enable the transmissibility calculation of the system with multi damping chambers. The equivalent mechanical models generated by linearization clarify the function of each component of the system and lead to the linearized transfer function that can give forth to the transmissibility exactly close to that of nonlinear models. The modified successive under-relaxation method is developed to calculate the linearized transfer function.

  • A bullet launcher can be developed as a smart instrument, especially for use in the military section, that can track, identify, detect, mark, lock, and shoot a target by implementing an image-processing system. In this research, the application of object recognition system, laser encoding as a unique marker, 2-dimensional movement, and pneumatic as a shooter has been studied intensively. The results showed that object recognition system could detect various colors, patterns, sizes, and laser blinking. Measuring the average error value of the object distance by using the camera is ±4, ±5, and ±6% for circle, square and triangle form respectively. Meanwhile, the average accuracy of shots on objects is 95.24% and 85.71% in indoor and outdoor conditions respectively. Here, the average prototype response time is 1.11 s. Moreover, the highest accuracy rate of shooting results at 50 cm was obtained 98.32%.

  • This paper presents results for dispensing and measuring micro-particles using a pneumatic dispensing system. Particle-suspended liquid droplets were dispensed and analyzed quantitatively at various particle concentrations and applied pressures. By using a developed experimental setup, the number of particles and the particle volume ratio in sequentially dispensed droplets were measured. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces were tested to find a suitable surface for counting the number of particle. It was confirmed that the dispensed particles concentrated into the center of the droplet on the smooth CD surface after evaporation of liquid. As the applied positive pressure increased, the number of particles per droplet increased consistently and the volume fraction of particles remained constant.

  • An adaptive controller for trajectory tracking control of a pneumatic cylinder is proposed. The controller is directly derived by using Lyapunov function, and very simple and computationally efficient since it does not require the mathematical model or the parameter values of a pneumatic system. It is also shown that the system is bounded stable with the controller, and the size of tracking errors can be made arbitrarily small. The stability and the performance of the controller is also verified experimentally. The results of the experiments demonstrate that the proposed controller achieves more accurate trajectory tracking performance than a PD controller.

  • FMEA and FTA have been widely applied to the safety studies for railway systems respectively. But it would be more effective to use these two methods at a same time because these are complementary. This article suggests a FMEA-FTA combined analysis technique to evaluate the risk for railway systems. A FMEA-FTA combined risk evaluation model and process are proposed and a case study is dealt with for PBU(Pneumatic Breaking Unit), a major subsystem of a railway vehicle.

  • In this research performed on a pneumatic actuator, the air flow entering and exiting the cylinder, and the motion and deformation characteristics of the piston during operation of the actuator, were predicted. This was carried out by utilizing an FSI(Fluid-Structural Interaction) analysis technique that incorporates principles in computational fluid dynamics and structural stress analysis, and potential performance degradation factors were examined. Analysis results indicated that performance improvements could be made through design modifications. These include adding an inlet and outlet on the upper and lower sections of the cylinder in the conventional model, and increasing the number of sites for piston guide bars from three to four.

  • Wheel skids may occur during train operations due to low adhesion at the wheel-rail contact point abnormally, and the skids, in turn, result in flats appearing on the wheels, which affect safety and ride comfort significantly. Thus, anti-skid control has a crucial role for safe braking and prevention from flats that could cause a disastrous train accident. This paper presents simulation studies on an anti-skid control unit (ASCU) with a brake system of a rolling stock including a pneumatic model for brake power supply and dump valve operation.
