  • This paper presents a simple and reliable one-touch type multi-immunosensing lab-on-a-chip (LOC) detecting antibodies as multi-disease markers using electrochemical method suitable for a portable point-of-care system (POCS). The multi-stacked LOC consists of a PDMS space layer for liquids loading, a PDMS valve layer with 50 im in height for the membrane, a PDMS channel layer for the fluid paths, and a glass layer for multi electrodes. For the disposable immunoassay which needs sequential flow control of sample and buffer liquids according to the designed strategies, reliable and easy-controlled on-chip operation mechanisms without any electric power are necessary. The driving forces of sequential liquids transfer are the capillary attraction force and the pneumatic pressure generated by air bladder push. These passive fluid transport mechanisms are suitable for single-use LOC module. Prior to the application of detection of the antibody as a disease marker, the model experiments were performed with anti-DNP antibody and anti-biotin antibody as target analytes. The flow test results demonstrate that we can control the fluid flow easily by using the capillary stop valve and the PDMS check valves. By the model tests, we confirmed that the proposed LOC is easily applicable to the bioanalytic immunosensors using bioelectrocatalysis.

  • This paper presents a cable-driven hydraulic actuator named Cable Rod Hydraulic Actuator (CRHA). The cable actuating system is attractive for designing a compact joint in robotic applications since it can be installed remotely from the joint. Recently, cable rods have been used in pneumatic area for inertia reduction. However, designing cable rods in hydraulics is challenging because it is difficult to achieve flexibility and endurance simultaneously under high pressure conditions. In this paper, the cable rod, which consists of a cable and jacket, is proposed to meet both requirements. To design the CRHA, we determined the design parameters, such as cylinder size, and selected the cable rod's material by friction and leakage test. Finally, comparisons experiments about step and frequency responses with conventional hydraulic actuators were performed to assess feasibility for robotic joints, and the results show that the proposed system has good bandwidth and fast response as robotic joints.

  • In this study, the failure mode and energy absorption capabilities of a composite shock absorber device, during an emergency landing are evaluated. The prototype has been installed and tested in laboratory simulating an emergency landing test condition. The crash absorber presents an innovative configuration able to reduce the loads transmitted to a helicopter fuselage during an emergency landing. It consists of a composite tailored tube installed on the landing gear strut. During an emergency landing this crash absorber system should be able to absorb energy through a pre-designed deformation. This solution, compared to an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber, avoids sealing checks, very high values of the shock absorber pressure, and results to be lighter, easy in maintenance, inspect and use. The activities reported in this paper have become an attractive research field both from the scientific viewpoint and the prospect of industrial applications, because they offer benefits in terms of energy absorbing, weight savings, increasing the safety levels, and finally reducing the costs in a global sense.

  • Since the occurrence of Portland cement, a great number of concrete structures were constructed. But the concrete structures have their own life times, which inevitably demand repairing treatments, especially on their surface parts. Currently many various methods have been developed and are being applied fer this purpose. In this study, a newly developed method using pneumatic chipping machine and anchor pin was adopted far repair of old concrete structure and the mechanical characteristics of cementing plane between existing and new concrete were tested. Comparing the removal methods for the decrepit part of existing concrete using pneumatic chipping machine and hydraulic breaker, the peak cohesion was higher when using chipping machine at the cementing plane. On the other hand, the residual cohesion was higher for the case of breaker. Step shaped chipping on the cementing plane was effective in increasing peak cohesion, which results 14% increase in the case of 30 mm step height and 22% in 50 mm height when compared with planar chipping plane. The use of anchor pin increased the residual cohesion, which restricted shear slip on the cementing plane after peak shear stress and the tensile strength of 32% compared with that of non-anchored case. According to the combined effect of step shaped chipping of 30 mm and anchor pin with an interval of 15 cm, the peak cohesion reached up to 77% and the residual cohesion showed 180% of the ones of the fresh concrete, respectively.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the bond strength of asphalt emulsions including polymer-modified emulsions for chip seals and fog seals using the bitumen bond strength (BBS) test. METHODS : For the laboratory testing, the Pneumatic Adhesion tensile Testing Instrument(PATTI) device is used to measure the bond strength between the asphalt emulsion and aggregate substrate based on the AASHTO TP-91. In order to conduct all the tests in controled condition, all test procedures are performed in the environmental chamber. The CRS-2L and the SBS CRS-2P emulsions are used as a polymer-modified emulsion, and then unmodified emulsion, the CRS-2, is compared for the evaluation of chip seal performance. For the fog seal performance evaluation, two types of polymer-modified emulsions and one of unmodified emulsion, the CSS-1H, are employed. For chip seal study, the BBS tests are performed at 30, 60, 120, and 240 minutes of curing times with curing and testing temperatures of $15^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $35^{\circ}C$. The fog seal tests are conducted at 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 minutes, and 24 hours with curing and testing temperatures of $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, and $35^{\circ}C$. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : Overall, chip seal emulsions and fog seal emulsions show the similar bond strength trend. At the same testing condition, polymer-modified emulsions show better bond strength than unmodified emulsions. Also, there is no significant difference between polymer-modified emulsions. One of important findings is that the most bond strength reaches their final bond strength within one hour of curing time. Therefore, the early curing time plays a vital role in the performance of chip seals and fog seals.

  • The propulsion system of space launch vehicle generates thrust by supplying oxidizer and fuel to combustion chamber. KSLV-II 2nd stage engine, currently under development by KARI, is to use liquid oxygen as a oxidizer and JET-A1 as a fuel. The 2nd stage pump-fed engine is mainly composed of combustion chamber, turbo-pump and engine supply system. To develop liquid propulsion engine, the development of combustion chamber must be preceded. For performance validation of the combustion chamber, the designed and manufactured combustion chamber should be tested in combustion chamber test facility(CCTF). The detailed design for the planned CCTF in Naro Space Center was conducted. The fuel supply system modeling using AMESim was performed based on the results of the detailed design, and the fuel supply characteristics was analyzed in this paper.

  • In this paper, experimental studies on the shroud separation were performed to investigate characteristics of the shroud separation at mach 3. Shroud separation tests were carried out in the vertical free-jet wind tunnel that is capable of testing separable structures. A shroud model was miniaturized to meet test objectives and test section dimensions of the wind tunnel. Pneumatic Locking and separation mechanisms were designed considering external force due to free stream. High speed cameras were used to record the shroud motion and unsteady shock patterns over the deploying shrouds during the shroud separation process. Also, unsteady pressures on the nose surface were measured by using the pressure sensors. Through the tests, the measurement data necessary for researches on the shroud separation technology were obtained. Shroud separation behaviors and characteristics of unsteady pressure on the nose surface for each external flow conditions were analyzed.

  • The development of high-performance shotcrete lining is essential in improving the long-term durability of tunnels and in introducing single-shell tunnelling methods, where shotcrete as well as rockbolts are used as permanent support members. In this paper, new and advanced admixtures to improve shotcrete performance are introduced. In addition, requirements for mechanical properties as well as test items for quality control of shotcrete are summarized. A case study on the application of the pneumatic pin penetration test which can estimate compressive strength of shotcrete more easily and quickly is also illustrated. Previous studies to analyze the behaviors of shotcrete lining by considering its transient hardening and to carry out the sensitivity analysis of the design parameters of shotcrete lining are discussed to give fundamental concepts on rock-support interactions. Representative single-shell tunnelling methods where high-performance shotcrete lining is applied as a permanent support are also introduced.

  • The vibrational characteristics of a radial-ply (155SR13 4PR) and a biased-ply tire (6.15-134PR) were investigated for examining the effects of tires with different structure on the ride characteristics of the vehicle. The natural frequencies at the tread band, mode shapes, and damping factors of two tires at the state of plane vibration were determined experimentally. The test work was performed at four levels of the inflation pressure, ranging from 171.7 kPa to 245.2 kPa, and three levels of the vertical load, deviating by 10% from the standard load designated by the Department of Transportation of the United States of America. The following results were drawn by the analysis of the test results: 1. The first-order natural frequencies of the radial-ply and the biased-ply tires at the tread band were 112 Hz and 159 Hz, respectively, at the state o f the free vibration when the inflation pressure of 196.2 kPa was applied. It was known that the biased-ply tire has higher resonant frequency than the radial-ply tire and the natural frequencies of the both tires move to the high frequency range as t he inflation pressure is increased. 2. The vibration modes of both tires were quite different. No big difference in mode shapes was examined as the inflation pressure was increased. But the natural frequencies of two tires were changed. For the radial-ply tire, no difference in mode shape was found whether the vertical load was applied or not. But a significant difference in mode shape was examined for the biased-ply tire. 3. Any difference was not found in damping factor as the different inflation pressures were applied. 4. When no vertical load was applied, damping factors of the radial-ply and biased-ply tire at the state of the natural vibration ranged from 2.6 to 5.9%, and from 4.1 to 7.8%, respectively. It was estimated that the radial-ply tire would have better cushioning than the biased-ply tire since the vertical spring rate of the radial-ply tire was much less than that of the biased-ply tire, even though the damping effect of the radial-ply tire was smaller than that of the biased-ply tire.

  • It is desirable for the vertical wind tunnel which can build uniform air flow across the vertical duct to be used for the purpose of the investigation of the aerodynamic properties of grains. This study was conducted to examine how the air velocity profile in the vertical duct is influenced by the various alternations of the elements of the wind tunnel, and to prepare design guidance of the vertical wind tunnel which can be used for investigating aerodynamic properties of grains. In addition, several tests were conducted to locate the test section which can be applicable for determining the terminal velocity of grain. The following conclusions were obtained from the study: 1. The size and the location of the outlet of the plenum chamber should be determined such that the outlet air flow is less affected by the air flow and the back pressure by the side wall of the chamber. 2. The honeycomb was not helpful for attaining uniform air flow in case that the air flow profile at the bottom of the vertical duct is serverely different from the ideal one. 3. Even though considerable pressure drop was resulted from the screens installed within the vertical duct, the screens were helpful for attaining uniform air flow in the duct. 4. It is desirable for the test section to be located at the position that not only the air flow of the duct is not disturbed by the distorted back pressure in the plenum chamber, but also less boundary layer is developed.
