2nd stage of KSLV-I, NaRo-Ho, performs CCAM not to collide with Naro Science Satellite. At that moment, the satellite should pass through the Plume Density area which was generated by KSLV-I KM residual thrust. Therefore, it is necessary to predict Plume Density field of KM residual thrust and guarantee the safety of the trajectory of payload. In this paper, DSMC method was used to simulate Plume Density by KM residual thrust and the simulation showed that the trajectory of Naro Science Satellite was safe.
In laser materials processing, localized heating, melting and evaporation caused by focused laser radiation forms a vapor on the material surface. The plume is generally an unstable entity, fluctuating according to its own dynamics. The beam is refracted and absorbed as it traverses the plume, thus modifying its power density on the surface of the condensed phases. This modifies material evaporation and optical properties of the plume. A laser-produced plasma plume simulation is completed using axisymmetric, high-temperature gas dynamic model including the laser radiation power absorption, refraction, and reflection. The physical properties and velocity profiles are verified using the published experimental and numerical results. The simulation results provide the effect of plasma plume fluctuations on the laser power density and quantitative beam radius changes on the material surface. It is proved that beam absorption, reflection and defocusing effects through the plume are essential to obtain appropriate mathematical simulation results. It is also found that absorption of the beam in the plume has much less direct effect on the beam power density at the material surface than defocusing does and helium gas is more efficient in reducing the beam refraction and absorption effect compared to argon gas for common laser materials processing.

The satellite payloaded on the 2nd stage of KSLV-I is planned to perform CCAM(Contamination and Collision Avoidance Maneuver) not to collide with KM(Kick Motor). At the moment, the satellite should pass through low density environment not to be contaminated by KM plume due to residual thrust. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the flow field of KM plume by residual thrust. In this paper, DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte-Carlo) method, which is widely accepted to simulate in rarefied regime, is used to compute the density field of KM plume by residual thrust and the result of DSMC simulation was compared with that of FLUENT to validate it.
A number of ocean outfalls are located around coastal area over the United States and discharge primary treated effluent into deep water for efficient wastewater treatment. Two of them, the Sand Island and Honouliuli municipal wastewater outfalls, are located on the south coast of Oahu. There have been growing interests about the plume dynamics around the ocean outfalls since plume discharged from the multiport diffuser may have significant impacts on coastal communities and immediate consequence on public health. Among the studies of plume dynamics performed in the vicinity of both outfalls, Project MB-4 in the Mamala Bay Study recently made with the funding in the $ 9 million amount statistically dealt with the near-field behavior of the plumes at the Sand Island and Honouliuli outfalls. However, Project MB-4 predicted much higher surfacing frequency than the realistic value obtained by model studies by Oceanit Laboratories, Inc.. It is suggested that improvements should be made in the application of the plume model to more simulate the actual discharge characteristics and ocean conditions. In this study, it has been recommended that input parameters in plume models reflect realistic density profile over the entire water column since. in the previous Mamala Bay Study, the density profiles were measured at 5m depth increments extending from 13 to 63 m depth (the density profile on the upper portion of water column was not included, Roberts 1995). It is proved that the density stratification is the important parameter for the submergence of the plume. In this study, as one of the important parameters, plume rise and initial dilution reflecting the density profile over the entire water column have been taken into account for more reliable plume behavior description.
The real-time holographic interferometer with digital high-speed camera is applied to the experimental study of laser induced plasma/plume in pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding. A pulsed Nd:YAG laser with 1.2 kW average power is applied to generate laser induced plume. The recording speed of the high-speed camera is 3,000 f/s. The high speed photographs of weld plume without another visualization method, are compared with the visualization photographs with holographic interferometer. The radiation intensity from the laser induced plume is recorded by the high speed photographs, which fluctuated during laser radiation and disappeared after laser end. The density distribution of the plume is recorded by the holographic visualization method. The experimental results show the process of generation of the laser induced plasma/plume, and give the feasibility of quantitative measurement of laser induced plume in laser welding.

Assuming Gaussian distribution of the density difference between a turbulent jet river plume and its ambient saline water, a hydrodynamic solution for the lateral spreading of a river plume is developed. Two advantages can be expected from the assumption we made. Firstly, we need not consider mixing processes in the plume in dealing with this Problem. Secondly, by Putting pressure gradients which can be obtained from the density distribution, into the equation of motion, we can solve them easily. We compared the analytic solution with the fold data of the Nakdong river plume and found reasonably good correspondence.
Three-dimensional numerical simulation using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was carried out in order to investigate the formation and dispersion of the plume discharged from the stack of a thermal power station. The simulation was based on the standard ${\kappa}{\sim}{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and a finite-volume method. Warm and moist exhaust from a power plant stack forms a visible plume as entering the cold ambient air. In the simulation, moisture content, emission velocity and temperature of the flue gas, air temperature and wind speed were dealt with the main parameters to analyze the properties of the plume composed mainly of water vapor. As a result of the simulation, the plume could be more apparent in cold winter due to a big difference of latent heat capacity. At no wind condition, the white plume rises 120 m upward from the top of the stack, and expands to 40 m around from the stack in cold winter after flue gas heat recovery. The influencing distance of relative humidity will be about 100 m to 400 m downstream from the stack with a cross wind effect. The decrease of flue gas temperature by heat recovery of thermal energy facilitates the formation of the plume and restrains its dispersion. Wind speed with vertical distribution affects the plume dispersion as well as the density.
Imaging Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (Imaging-DOAS) has been utilized in recent years to provide slant column density (SCD) distributions of several trace gas species in the plume. The present study introduces a new method using Imaging-DOAS data to determine two-dimensional plume structure from the plume emissions of power plant in conditions of negligible aerosol effects on radiative transfer within the plume. We demonstrates for the first time that two-dimensional distributions of sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) and nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) in power plant emissions can be determined simultaneously in terms of SCD distribution. The $SO_2$ SCD values generally decreased with increasing distance from the stack and with distance from the center of the plume. Meanwhile, high $NO_2$ SCD was observed at locations several hundred meters away from the first stack due to the ratio change of NO to $NO_2$ in NOx concentration, attributed to the NO oxidation by $O_3$. The results of this study show the capability of the Imaging-DOAS technique as a tool to estimate plume dimensions in power plant emissions.

The new KOMPSAT in preliminary design phase will utilize 4.45 N monopropellant thrusters for attitude and orbit control. In this paper, a numerical plume analysis is performed to verify the effects of thruster plume on the satellite with a 3-D satellite base region model by DSMC. As a result, plume behaviors such as overall plume temperature, total density and thermal radiation to solar array are estimated.

A hydrodynamic solution for the lateral spreading of a river plume which was developed by assuming a Gaussian distribution of density difference between a turbulent jet river plume and ambient salt water is verified by the field data in the Nakdong river plume. Effect of the river plume on the transport of fine-grained suspended sediment at the Nakdong Estuary is also examined. The analysis of fold data showed a reasonably good correspondence with the theoretical solution adopted in this work Therefore, the hydrodynamic solution can be used as a useful tool in dealing with the lateral spreading of a river plume. The density stratification due to the existence of a river plume seems to cause a retarded settling of the suspended sediments in the water column. and thus a farther transport of the fine sediment is expected than in the normal steady flow.
