Metal bipolar plate applied to Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell is getting most attractive due to their good feasibility of mass production and low cost. But it is one of the immediate causes of performance decline because it is difficult to reduce channel pitch of metal bipolar plate. In this study, mesh was inserted in between bipolar plate and GDL to obtain uniform contact pressure without reducing channel pitch. The section measuring and performance test were carried out to confirm the mesh structure distributes contact pressure equally in reacting area. The performance of 3 type mesh structures developed in this study were higher than the normal cell at all over the current range. Especially, it showed that the mesh cell performance was increased and pressure drop was decreased with diminishing mesh gap size. The Mesh structure was more sensitive to humidification and contact pressure change than the normal cell.
This paper presents the results of a study on flexural capacity of large size RC slabs strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) plates. A total of 5 specimens of 6.0m length were tested in four point bending after strengthening them with externally bonded CFRP plates. The CFRP plates were bonded without prestress and with two prestress levels, 0.4% and 0.6% of CFRP plate strain. Test variables included the type of strengthening, prestressing level, and the effects according to each test variables are analysed. The experimental results show that proposed methods can increase significantly the flexural capacity such as strength, stiffness of the beam and the increase ranged between 36.2% and 63.2% of the load-carrying capacity of the control beams. The non-prestressed specimen failed by separation of the plate from the beam due to premature debonding while most of the prestressed specimens failed by CFRP plate fracture. And the cracking loads and maximum loads were increased proportionally to the prestress level.
To improve antithrombogenicity of polymer that used in vascular graft and artificial organs, seeding of human endothelial cells on the polyurethane was studied. Human endothelial cells were ismlated from human umbilical veins, using type I collagenase, and identified with goat anti vWF antibodies. Human endothilial cell seeding was tried upon the polyurethane which has good mechanical property and resists stresses. The hydrophobic polyurethane surface was changed hydrophilic by corona discharf:e treatment. Surface hydrophilicity was measured with Wilhemly plate method and the goniometer. To evaluate matrix protein adsorption, fibronectin adsorption test was done. To eveluate cell adhesion, human endothelial cell attachment forces were measured rising a perfusion chamber of , ism diamter. Less cells were detached from the hydrophilically treated polyurethane. This showed that corona discharge on the polyurethane could improve matrix adsorption and endothelial cell attachment.
Generally vascular grafts with a relatively large inner diameter (> 5 mm) have been successfully employed for replacement in the human body. However, the use of small diameter grafts is limited, because these grafts rapidly occlude due to the thrombosis. The ideal blood-contacting surface of a prosthesis would be an endothelial cell (EC) lining, because the confluent monolayer of healthy ECs that culture natural blood vessels represents the ideal nonthrombogenic surface. For vascular graft application, the stable EC adhesion on surface under How conditions is very important. In this study, the adhesive strength of ECs attached on polymer surfaces coated with collagen type IV (Col IV), fibronectin (Fn), laminin (Ln), and treated with corona was investigated onto polyurethane (PU) films. The EC-attached PU surfaces were mounted on parallel-plate flow chambers in a How system prepared for cell adhesiveness test. Three different shear stresses (100, 150, and 200 dyne/㎠) were applied to the How chambers and each shear stress was maintained for 120 min to investigate the effect of shear stress and surface treatment condition on the EC adhesion strength. It was observed that the EC adhesion strength on the surface-modified PU films was in the order of Ln≡Fn > Col IV > corona 》 control. More than 70% of the adhered cells were remained on surface-modified PU surface after applying the shear stress,200 dyne/㎠ for 2 hrs, whereas the cells were completely detached on the control PU surface within 10 min after applying the same shear stress. It seems that the type of adsorbed proteins and hydrophilicitv onto the PU surfaces play very important roles for cell adhesion strength.
A copolymer P[OSA-MI] was synthesized by copolymerization of its corresponding monomers, N-phenyl maleimide (MI) and 2-octen-l-ylsuccinic anhydride (OSA). The polymer (poly[2-[1-(2,5-dioxo-l-phenylpyrrolidin-3-ylmethyl)heptyl]-succinic acid 4-(2-$\{$ethyl-[4-(4-nitrophen-ylazo)phenyl]amino$\}$ethyl)ester]) P[DR1MA-MI] was obtained from the reaction of P[OSA-MI] with 2-[4-(4-nitrophenylazo)-N-ethylphenylamino] ethanol (DR1). A stable monolayer of P[DRIMA-MI] was formed by spreading the solution of the polymer in chloroform. In Y-type Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films prepared using this Langmuir-Blodgett method, the second harmonic waves generated from adjacent mono layers canceled each other out. In X-and Z-type LB films, the second harmonic intensity increased upon increasing the number of monolayers, but this increase was somewhat smaller than predicted by the square law. This phenomenon is due to defects or imperfect alignment of the dipoles in the LB film. The generation of second harmonic waves from Y-type LB films having an even number of mono layers supports this argument. The degree of imperfection seemed to increase as the number of layers increased. The second-order nonlinear optical properties of spin-cast films of these polymers were also measured. The largest second harmonic coefficient of the poled P[DRIMA-MI] film coated on a glass plate was 19 pm/V.
The shear behavior of polymers obtained by means of devices such as capillary and cone-and-plate rheo-meters is commonly used to assess their processing performance and as a characterization tool. However, the number of instances when two polymers have the same shear properties but perform differently during certain types of processing operations (e.g. film blowing and sheet extrusion) indicate that shear properties alone may not be sufficient to characterize polymeric fluids. We begin by defining the kinematics of shear-free or extensional flow and the associated material functions. The extensional and shear behavior of three different types of polyethylene (PE) are then compared to illustrate the points that one cannot ascertain the extensional properties of polymer melts from their shear properties and, furthermore, there may not be a simple relation between properties obtained from one type of extensional flow and those of another type. The kinematics of most processing flows are extensional rather than shear in nature, and , hence, the performance of polymers during processes such as fiber spinning, film casting, film blowing, thermoforming, blow molding, and even extrusion is more readily accounted for through extensional viscosity measurements. Methods for carrying out extensional flow measurements are then reviewed including approximate methods. To illustrate the sensitivity of extensional viscosity measurements to subtle changes in the molecular architecture of PEs, results are presented for samples with a narrow molecular weight distribution but with varying numbers of long chain branches. Finally, constitutive equations which allow one to separate shear and extensional flow behavior are discussed as any attempts to simulate the subtle processing differences between two polymers will require constitutive equations of this nature.
This paper introduces conceptual design of scroll expander-compressor unit for fuel cell. Since air discharged out of the fuel cell stack after reaction has still high pressure energy, some power can be extracted out of it by directing it to pass through an expanding device so that the extracted power can be used to drive an auxiliary compressor. For this purpose, a scroll type expander coupled to a scroll type compressor was designed: orbiting scroll of the expander and that of the compressor were made to share three of common drive pins installed in the mid frame plate, and central cavity in the mid-plate was used as a back pressure chamber to provide axial compliance for both orbiting scrolls. Performance analysis for the expander showed that the shaft power of the expander could reduce the auxiliary power consumption in the fuel cell by about one third at the scroll clearance of $10{\mu}m$.
Optically isotropic liquid crystal (LC) mixture such as blue-phase LC and nanostructured LC composites exhibit the advantages of fast response time, high contrast ratio and wide-viewing angle due to the induced birefringence along the horizontal electric field. Utilizing this mixture, a novel single cell gap in-plane switching-type polymer-stabilized blue-phase transflective liquid crystal display by embedding the nanowire grid polarizer as a polarization-dependent reflective polarizer in the R region is proposed. This device can be used as a normal black mode without any quarter-wave plate or patterned in-cell phase retarder. Moreover, the transmittance is identical to the reflectance so that it will be suitable for single gamma driving. Detailed electro-optic performances, such as voltage-dependent light efficiency and viewing angle of the proposed device configuration, are investigated.

Lanthanide diphthalocyanines have interesting properties on electrochemical and chemical redox reactions. It is however, difficult to use because of thier short device life. Plasma-polymerization attends to improvement thier device life. Yb-diphthalocyanine ($YbPc_2$) polymer film was deposited in a parallel plate electrodes-type RF plasma reactor. $YbPc_2$ was sublimed into the argon plasma, and polymer film was obtained on a substrate. Radio frequency was constant of 13.56MHz. Pressure of argon gas, sublimation rate of $YbPc_2$ and RF power were variable parameters depending on film quality. Surface of polymer films include a lot of sub-micron order lumps. It was indicated that size of lumps depends on polymerization degree controled by parameters. Size of lumps and polymerization degree are increased with RF power. However, by the high RF power over 40W, polymerization degree is decreased with RF power and surface of film is rough. In condition of RF power is high, polymerization will compete with etching of film. We obtained good films for electrochromic display with RF power of 20W, argon gas pressure of 8.0 Pa and sublimationrate of $1.2 \times 10$ mol/min, and good films for gas sensor with RF power of 30W, argon gas pressure of 10.6Pa and sublimation rate of $1.2 \times 10$ mol/min.

Layer separation (delamination) is an essential threat to fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) plates under dynamic, static, and fatigue loads. Under compressive load, the growth of delamination will lead to structural instability. The aim of this paper is to present a method using shape memory alloy (SMA) stitches to suppress the delamination growth in a FRP plate and to improve the buckling behavior of the plate with a rectangular hole. The present paper is divided into two parts. Firstly, a closed-form (CF) formulation for evaluating the buckling load of the FRP plate is presented. Secondly, the finite element method (FEM) will be employed to calculate the buckling loads of the plates which serves to validate the results obtained from the closed-form method. The novelty of this work is the development of the closed-form solution using the p-Ritz energy approach regarding the stress-dependent phase transformation of SMA to trace the equilibrium path. For the FEM, the Lagoudas constitutive model of the SMA material is implemented in FORTRAN programming language using a user material subroutines (VUMAT). The model is simulated in ABAQUS/Explicit solver due to the nature of the loading type. The cohesive zone model (CZM) is applied to simulate the delamination growth.
