  • Ship Blocks are assembled by welding, and among them, welding between large blocks (Pre-erection stage) is used as feature of butt. In this process, local material has a experience of thermal cycle and become finally shrunk. As for inconsistency of shrunk weldments and adjacent regions, ship structure would be deformed locally and globally. Thermal distortion analyses are done for control of these processes, and methodologies capable of ship block size among them are using 2-D shell element in FEM. A shell element takes charge of plate, so it has its thickness which is important for angular distortion by welding. By the way, a butt-welding consists normally of several passes, and weldment thickness are different at each pass. If a calculated final one-time welding shrinkage is acting on the shell element whose thickness is same as it of plate, then deformation value must be underestimated. This research developed a methodology that total deformation after multi-pass welding can be analyzed by one time at shell element having original thickness of its plate. We use the SDB thermal distortion analysis method and verified by several experiment. The both experimental and analysis results showed good agreements.

  • In this study, by using finite element non-linear static analysis and comparing it with experimental models, the buckling and post-buckling behavior of bracing gusset plates has been investigated. The effects of such parameters as dimension and thickness of the gusset plate and the influence of position of the bracing member on the behavior of gusset plate have been examined. The results of the analyses clearly suggest that capacity, buckling and post-buckling behaviors of gusset plates depend on the position of the bracing splice plate with respect to the free bending line as well as on the size and thickness of the gusset plate. Also, with respect to numerical analysis results, some practical graphs for the calculation of buckling capacity of gusset plate connections are presented. For steel structures, the proposed method is apparently more accurate than available code procedures.

  • Hihg Tensile Steel enables to reduce the plate thickness comparing to the case when Mild Steel is used. From the economical view points this is very preferable since the reduction in the hull weight. however to use the High Tensile Steel effectively the plate thickness may become thin so that the occurrence of buckling is inevitable and design allowing plate buckling may be necessary. If the inplane stiffness of the plating decreases due to buckling the flexural rigidity of the cross sect6ion of a ship's hull also decreases. This may lead to excessive deflection of the hull girder under longitudinal bending. In these cases a precise estimation of plate's behavior after buckling is necessary and nonliner analysis of isolated and stiffened plates is required for structural sys-tem analysis. In this connection this paper discusses nonlinear behaviour of thin plate under thrust. Based on the analytical method elastic large deflection analysis of isolated plate is perform and simple expression are derived to evaluated the inplane rigidity of plates subjected to uniaxial compression.

  • A circular plate with constant thickness, finite radius and stiff edge lying on an elastic halfspace is considered. The half-space consists of a soft functionally graded (FGM) layer with arbitrary varying elastic properties and a homogeneous elastic substrate. The plate bends under the action of arbitrary axisymmetric distributed load and response from the elastic half-space. A semi-analytical solution for the problem effective in whole range of geometric (relative layer thickness) and mechanical (elastic properties of coating and substrate, stiffness of the plate) properties is constructed using the bilateral asymptotic method (Aizikovich et al. 2009). Approximated analytical expressions for the contact stresses and deflections of the plate are provided. Numerical results showing the qualitative dependence of the solution from the initial parameters of the problem are obtained with high precision.

  • A comprehensive study was provided to investigate the buckling behavior of the steel plates with and without through-thickness holes subjected to uniaxial compression using ABAQUS. The method was validated by the results reported in the literature. Using the critical stresses, the buckling coefficients ($K_c$) were calculated. The effects of inclusion of material nonlinearity, plate thickness (t), aspect ratio (AR), and initial imperfection on buckling resistance of the plate was studied. Besides, the effects of having the hole in the plate were also studied. The diameter of the hole was normalized by dividing by plate breadth and was given in the form of ${\alpha}$. Results showed that perforating one hole in the center of a plate increases the plate buckling resistance while the having two holes resulted in a decrease in the plate buckling resistance. The effects of hole eccentricity (Ecc) on the buckling resistance of the plate was studied. The position of the hole center was normalized by half of the plate breadth and length in X- and Y-directions, respectively. In this study, four cases of boundary conditions were considered, and the corresponding buckling behavior were studied combined with plate aspect ratio. It was observed that the boundary condition of the case I resulted in the highest buckling resistance. Finally, a comparison was made between the buckling behavior of the uniaxially and biaxially loaded plate. It was revealed that the buckling resistance of a biaxially loaded plate is lower half than half of that of the uniaxially loaded plate.

  • A single plate shear connection, or shear tab, is a very popular shear connection due to its merit in ease of construction and material economy. However, problems in understanding the connection behavior, both in terms of strength and ductility, have been well-documented. Suggestions or design model for single plate connections in AISC Design Manual have been altered several times, with the latest edition settling down to giving designers pre-calculated design strength tables if the connection details agree with given configurations. Results from many full-scale tests and finite element models in the past suggest that shear strength of a bolt group in single plate shear connections might be affected by yield strength of plate material; therefore, this research was aimed to investigate and clarify effects of plate yield strength and thickness on shear strength of the bolt group in the connections, including the validity of using a plate thickness/bolt diameter ratio ($t_p/d_b$) in design, by using finite element models. More than 20 models have been created by using ABAQUS program with 19.0- and 22.2-mm A325N bolts and A36 and Gr.50 plates with various thicknesses. Results demonstrated that increase of plate thickness or plate yield strength, with the $t_p/d_b$ ratio remained intact, could significantly reduce shear strength of the bolt group in the connection as much as 15 percent. Results also confirmed that the $t_p/d_b$ ratio is a valid indicator to be used for guaranteeing strength sufficiency. Because the actual ratio recommended by AISC Design Manual is $t_p/d_b$ + 1.6 (mm) for connections with a number of bolts less than six and plate yield strength in construction is normally higher than the nominal value used in design, it is proposed that shear strength of a bolt group in single plate connections with a number of bolts equal or greater than seven be reduced by 15 percent and the $t_p/d_b$ ratio be limited to 0.500.

  • A design system was developed for the doubler plate of a ship structure simultaneously subjected to in-plane loads and lateral pressure based on general dimensions and those of a representative ship structure. An equivalent design equation that considers various structural design parameters was derived by introducing the equivalent plate thickness theory, and the design of the doubler plate reinforcement of the ship structure was developed. A hybrid structural design system was established for a doubler plate simultaneously subjected to in-plane loads and lateral pressure consisting of two modules: an optimized design module and a double plate strength & design review module. The practical application of this design system was illustrated to show its usability. It was found that the design safety of the doubler plate was ensured, and this system could be used as an initial design guide to review the double plate reinforcement for a dent or corrosion of the ship plate members. Using the developed design system would make it possible to obtain a more reasonable doubler plate structure that considers the rational reinforcement of plate members of ship structures. In addition, a more reliable structural analysis using a strength evaluation process can be performed to verify the efficiency of the optimum structural design for the doubler plate structure.

  • For an axially loaded box-shaped member, the width-to-thickness ratio of the plate elements preferably should not be greater than 40 for Q235 steel grades in accordance with the Chinese code GB50017-2003. However, in practical engineering the plate width-to-thickness ratio is up to 120, much more than the limiting value. In this paper, a 3D nonlinear finite element model is developed that accounts for both geometrical imperfections and residual stresses and the ultimate capacity of welded built-up box columns, with larger width-to-thickness ratios of 60, 70, 80, and 100, is simulated. At the same time, the interaction buckling strength of these members is determined using the effective width method recommended in the Chinese code GB50018-2002, Eurocode 3 EN1993-1 and American standard ANSI/AISC 360-10 and the direct strength method developed in recent years. The studies show that the finite element model proposed can simulate the behavior of nonlinear buckling of axially loaded box-shaped members very well. The width-to-thickness ratio of the plate elements in welded box section columns can be enlarged up to 100 for Q235 steel grades. Good agreements are observed between the results obtained from the FEM and direct strength method. The modified direct strength method provides a better estimation of the column strength compared to the direct strength method over the full range of plate width-to-thickness ratio. The Chinese code and Eurocode 3 are overly conservative prediction of column capacity while the American standard provides a better prediction and is slightly conservative for b/t = 60. Therefore, it is suggested that the modified direct strength method should be adopted when revising the Chinese code.

  • This paper presents theoretical solutions for the three-dimensional (3D) stress field in an infinite isotropic elastic plate containing a through-the-thickness circular hole subjected to far-field in-plane loads by using Kane and Mindlin's assumption. The dangerous position, where the premature fracture or failure of the plate will take place, the expressions of the tangential stress at the surface of the hole and the out-of-plane stress constraint factor are found in a concise, explicit form. Based on the present theoretical solutions, a comprehensive analysis is performed on the deviated degree of the in-plane stresses from the related plane stress solutions, stress concentration and out-of-plane constraint, and the emphasis has been placed on the effects of the plate thickness, Poisson's ratio and the far-field in-plane loads on the stress field. The analytical solution shows that the effects of the plate thickness and Poisson's ratio on the deviation of the 3D in-plane stress components is obvious and could not be ignored, although their effects on distributions of the in-plane stress components are slight, and that the effect of the far-field in-plane loads is just on the contrary of that of the above two. When only the shear stress is loaded at far field, the stress concentration factor reach its peak value about 8.9% higher than that of the plane stress solutions, and the out-of-plane stress constraint factor can reach 1 at the surface of the hole and is the biggest among all cases considered.
