The load distribution factor (LDF) values of simplified composite H beam panel bridges (SCHPBs) that were subjected to one lane and two lane loads were investigated using three dimensional finite element analyses with the computer program ABAQUS (2007). This study considered some design parameters such as the slab thickness, the steel plate thickness, the span length, and the continuity of the SCHPBs in the development of new LDFs. The distribution values that were obtained from these analyses were compared with those from the AASHTO Standard, LRFD, and the equations presented by Tarhini and Frederick, Huo et al., Back and Shin, and Cai. The AASHTO Standard distribution factors for SCHPBs were found to be very conservative. Sometimes, the distribution values from the finite element analyses for interior girders were similar to the results of the AASHTO LRFD, whereas the values for exterior girders were conservative in most cases. The new distribution values that were presented in this study produced LDFs that are more conservative than those from the finite element method. For the simple application of the design to SCHPBs, bridge engineers can use 0.42 for the interior girder and 0.32 for the exterior girder. The proposed values improve the current design procedure for the LDF problem and increase SCHPB design efficiency.

Installing Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) is one of the economical ways to resolve the challenges of noise, vibration, and the open-deck steel railway bridge impact, and the SSF method using the interlocking sleeper fastener has recently been developed. In this study, the method employed for determining the optimum vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad installed under the bridge sleeper, which is utilized to adjust the rail height and absorb shock when the train passes when the interlocking sleeper fastener is applied, is presented. To determine the optimal vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad, related existing design codes are reviewed, and, running safety, ride comfort, track safety, and bridge vibration according to the change in the vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad are estimated via flexible multi-body dynamic analysis,. The flexible multi-body dynamic analysis is performed using commercial programs ABAQUS and VI-Rail. The numerical analysis is conducted using the bridge model for a 30m-long plate girder bridge, and the response is calculated when passing ITX Saemaeul and KTX vehicles and freight wagon when the vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad is altered from 7.5 kN/mm to 240 kN/mm. The optimum stiffness of the sleeper pad is calculated as 200 kN/mm under the conditions of the track components applied to the numerical analysis.

In general, bridges are facilities installed for the purpose of easily passing through sections such as valleys and rivers. Railway bridges that run through downtown areas are damaged due to external factors such as earthquakes and collisions with passing vehicles, resulting in serious human casualties. This can cause serious human and properties damage, such as functional paralysis in downtown areas. Depending on the degree of damage, repair work such as partial repair or full replacement is in progress for the bridge where the collision occurred. When damage or deformation occurs due to collision, the repair method is determined according to the degree of deformation and the degree to which the load capacity of the bridge is affected by the deformation. In this study, a numerical analysis review was performed on the repair work for the local deformation caused by the collision of a vehicle on an old railway bridge installed and in operation in an urban area. To this end, a structural safety review of the bridge for local deformations caused by vehicle collisions was conducted. In this paper, a repair method for the accident bridge was presented based on the analysis results.
A reliability analysis of the fatigue failure of highway steel bridges was performed by applying the Miner's fatigue damage rule for the fatigue design truck proposed for the LRFD code and for the current DB 24 truck. The limit state function for fatigue failure is expressed as a function of various random variables that affect fatigue damage. Among these variables, the statistical parameters for the equivalent moment, the impact factor, and the loadometer were obtained by analyzing recently measured domestic traffic data, and the parameters for the fatigue strength, the girder distribution factor, and the headway factor were obtained from the measured data reported in literature. Based on the reliability analysis, the fatigue truck model for the LRFD code was proposed. After applying the proposed fatigue truck to the LRFD code, 16 composite plate and box girder bridges were designed based on the LRFD method, and the LRFD design results for the fatigue limit state were compared with those by the current KHBDC.

This study proposes a reliability based design criteria for the steel bridge (H-beam, plate-girder and composite-beam), which is most common type of steel bridge, and also proposes the theoretical bases of nominal safety factors as well as load and rasistance factors based on the reliability theory. Major 2nd moment reliability analysis and design theories including both Cornell's MFOSM (Mean First Order 2nd Moment) Methods and Lind-Hasofer's AFOSM(Advanced First Order 2nd Moment) Methods are summarized and compared, and it has been found that Lind-Hasofer's approximate and an approximate Log-normal type reliability formula are well suited for the proposed reliability study. A target reliability index (${\beta}_0=3.5$) is selected as an optimal value considering our practice based on the calibration with the safety pravisions of the current steel bridge design code. Galambo's theory is used for the derivation of the algorithm for the evaluation of uncertainties associated with resistences by LRFD Format and SGST Format, whereas the magnitude of the uncertainties associated with load effects are chosen primarily by considering our level of practice. It may be concluded that the proposed LRFD reliability based design provisions for the steel highway bridge give more rational design than the current standard code for steel highway bridge.
In this paper, finite element (FE) model updating based on multi-objective optimization with the surrogate model for a steel plate girder bridge is investigated. Conventionally, FE model updating for bridge structures uses single-objective optimization with finite element analysis (FEA). In the case of the conventional method, computational burden occurs considerably because a lot of iteration are performed during the updating process. This issue can be addressed by replacing FEA with the surrogate model. The other problem is that the updating result from single-objective optimization depends on the condition of the weighting factors. Previous studies have used the trial-and-error strategy, genetic algorithm, or user's preference to obtain the most preferred model; but it needs considerable computation cost. In this study, the FE model updating method consisting of the surrogate model and multi-objective optimization, which can construct the Pareto-optimal front through a single run without considering the weighting factors, is proposed to overcome the limitations of the single-objective optimization. To verify the proposed method, the results of the proposed method are compared with those of the single-objective optimization. The comparison shows that the updated model from the multi-objective optimization is superior to the result of single-objective optimization in calculation time as well as the relative errors between the updated model and measurement.

This study was initiated to develop an effective inspection method to detect defects such as corrosion in closed-cell steel members in steel-box girder bridges. The ultrasonic velocity method among various non-destructive method was selected as a rapid and effective method to derive the average propagation velocity in the medium by using the ultrasonic wave velocity method for specimens of different thickness. The regression analysis was performed based on the experimental results, and the results was interpolated to evaluate the prediction accuracy. If the material properties are identical, this ultrasonic velocity method can predict the thickness using the averaged transmitted velocity. In addition, a continuous scanning method moving at 200 mm/s was tested for scanning a wide area of a bridge. The results exhibited that the continuous scanning method was able to effectively scan the different thickness of a bridge.

Generally, estimations on the displacement as an important factor in evaluating the safety of large structures could be a barometer assessing whether the condition of the structure is deteriorating. Practically, it is not easy how to measure the displacement response to large structures like suspension bridges. In this study, as a method for estimation displacement response from strain signals, mode decomposition technique is proposed. Total displacement response is estimated by superposing quasistatic displacement response and modal displacement responses in dominant modes with larger contributions after estimating the modal displacement responses. If foiled strain gauges are used to measure strain signals, there would likely to generate electric noise, what's more, the more measuring points there are the more economic burden it could be. In order to solve such problems, fiber optic bragg-grating(FBG) sensors were used, which have multi-point measurements with no effect on electric noises. Therefore, the experiment was performed through dynamic load test of suspension bridge and plate-girder bridge to review the possibility for using mode decomposition technique.

Estimating moving vehicle loads is important in modeling design loads for bridge design and construction. The paper proposes a moving force identification algorithm using moment influence lines measured at multi-axes. Density estimation function was applied to estimate more than two wheel loads when estimated load values fluctuated severely. The algorithm has been examined through simulation studies on a simple-span plate-girder bridge. Influences of measurement noise and error in velocity on the identification results were investigated in the simulation study. Also, laboratory experiments were carried out to examine the algorithm. The load identification capability was dependent on the type and speed of moving loads, but the developed algorithm could identify loads within 10% error in maximum.
Traditional external post-tensioning method using either steel bars or tendons is commonly used as a retrofitting method for concrete bridges. However, the external post-tensioning method has some disadvantages such as stress concentration at anchorages and inefficient load carrying capability regarding live loads. Thermal prestressing method is a newly proposed method for strengthening and rehabilitation of concrete girder bridges. Founded on a simple concept of thermal expansion and contraction of steel, the method is a hybrid method of external post-tensioning and steel plate bonding, combining the merits of two methods. In this paper, basic concepts of the method are presented and an illustrative experiment is introduced. From actual experimental data, the thermal prestressing effect is substantiated and the FEM approach for its analysis is verified.
