  • The safety evaluations of railway wheel sets make use of the static fracture toughness obtained in ingot materials. The static fracture toughness of wheelset materials has been extensively studied by experiments, but the dynamic fracture toughness with respect to wheel set materials has not been studied enough yet. It is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the fracture mechanics depending on each location for a full-scale wheel set for high-speed trains, because the load state for each location of the wheel set while running is different the contact load between the wheel and rail, cyclic stress in the wheel plate, etc. This paper deals with the fracture toughness depend on load rates. The fracture toughness depending on load rate data shows that once the downward curve from quasi-static values was reached, subsequent values showed a slow increase with respect to the impact velocity. This means that dynamic fracture toughness should be considered in the design code of the wheelset material.

  • Field tests were conducted to investigate effects of a rail joint on the dynamic behavior of railway bridge. A four-span simpled supported plate girder bridge which has a rail joint on the third span was selected for tests. At the operating train loading, the induced vibration of the first and third span has been examined. The dynamic magnification ratio was used for quantitative analysis of impact effects caused by rail joint. The result of tests show that dynamic behavior of railway bridge picked up considerably due to a rail joint.

  • The stabbing guide is often used to guide an add-on pile into an existing pile in offshore jacket installation. It provides a pile alignment for a welding tie-in in static condition as well. Even stabbing guide is an essential component in pile installation, it is not considered as a permanent offshore structure. In this regard, there is not a define design guideline proposed. In API RP 2A WSD, it briefly define the design considerations of stabbing guide. The failure of stabbing guide can cause a greate economical loss and a serious impact to the project schedule. Stabbing guide design should consider many factors considering actual work conditions for both static and dynamic situations. In the paper, a design method is proposed by appling the plate theory and it is confirmed numerically with FEM modeling. The geometry of stabbing guide is assumed as a cylinder shape with various wall thickness and effective length. The various thickness, effective length and pile size are compared for stable stabbing guide design.

  • The slab(flat) truss plate used for building construction is analyzed for vibration and noise. Using floor impact test and numerical method (FEM), both net form and traditional form are compared for vibration and noise. The results show that the frequencies of a net form are lower than those of a traditional form in the case of free vibration, and the noise values of a net form are lower than those of a traditional form for the range from 500 Hz to 2000 Hz.

  • In guard rail crashes, the development of guard rail structure to ensure the maintenance of safety for passengers is very important. So, this paper focuses on understanding the possibility of efficient structural development considering crash strength of guard rail through computer simulation using the commercial code, LS-DYNA3D at the initial stage of guard rail development. For this study, guard rail structure was modeled using shell elements to represent major structural members and passenger car was modeled using plate elements of simple shape to do not have the drawing, and impact boundary conditions required by regulation was applied. In order to confirm the validity of the computational results, they were compared with the test results.

  • Recently, the noise environmental issue in compound residential areas like apartments becomes a very critical factor fer the building designers. In order to satisfy the customer need to live in a quiet environment, several interior structures for buildings are being introduced. The multi-layered composite floor plate is one of them. This structure is designed to prevent the noise generated by an object collision. (omitted)

  • In this paper, FSTL(field sound transmission loss) measured in the mock-up is studied and compared to the STL measured in laboratory. A mock-up is built by using 6t steel plate, and two identical cabins are made where 25t or 50t panel is used to construct wall and ceiling inside the steel structure. Various wall panels and ceilings are tested, where the effects of U/T, sealing, panel thickness, ceilings are studied. It is shown that the effect of ceiling thickness is negligible and FSTL is lower than STL by 5-7 dB due to several flanking paths.

  • A strut mount is an important part of vehicles which reduces the vibration and the impact transmitted from the wheels while supporting a shock absorber and a coil spring. Rubber compounding, shape design, and process design technologies are important components to improve the functionality of a strut mount such as durability, static, dynamic, and torsional characteristics. Among them the rubber compounding technology is the key technology which dominates the quality of a strut mount. In this study a strut mount with high reliability has been developed by adopting new rubber compounding and improving the shape of the inner plate and the isolator. Through the tests for prototypes it has been shown that the durability has been improved more than 2.5 times, from about 60,000 cycles to about 160,000 cycles.
