  • The distribution of stress and strain in elastic stages is investigated by the experiments of two dimensional photoelastic coating and Moire fringe method. Center block type and cover plate type of fillet welds are used as specimens in the test. The results are as follows. 1) Center block type gets less uniform stress distribution than cover plate type. And its stress concentration factor, especially at root, is larger than that at toe. 2) When main plate and cover plate closely contact and it cause friction, stress concentration decreases more than that in case of slit. That is because stress can be transmitted on the contact surface. 3) When slit is made, the outside of fillet gets more stress than the inside of it. 4) While the plastic strain distribution of center block type reaches the maximum at root and differs very slightly from that under lower loading, the plastic strain distribution of cover plate type is inclined to get the maximum at the outside of fillet rather than at root. 5) When the plastic strain value of cover plate type is compared with that of center block type at toe and root, the relations between the former and the latter shows root<toe and root>toe. 6) Because stress distribution becomes changed according to loading, fracture angle cannot be estimated by the peaks of elastic stress distribution. 7) The strain distribution just before fracture can be found by Moire fringe method.

  • The objective of this work was to evaluate the ductile cracked structures with bonded composite patch used in probabilistic elastic plastic fracture mechanics subjected to tensile load. The finite element method is used to analyze the stress intensity factors for elastic case, the effect of cracks and the thickness of the patch ($e_r$) are presented for calculating the stress intensity factors. For elastic-plastic the Monte Carlo method is used to predict the distribution function of the mechanical response. According to the obtained results, we note that the stress variations are important factors influencing on the distribution function of (J/Je).

  • In this study, effect of horizontal in situ stress on failure mechanism around underground openings excavated in isotropic, elastic rock zones is investigated. For estimating the plastic zone occurrence, an induced stress influence area approach (Bray Equations) was modified to define critical stress ratio according to the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. Results obtained from modified calculations were compared with results of some other analytical solutions for plastic zone thickness estimation and the numerical modelling (finite difference method software, FLAC2D) study. Plastic zone and its geometry around tunnels were analyzed for different in situ stress conditions. The modified equations gave similar results with those obtained from the other approaches. However, safer results were calculated using the modified equations for high in situ stress conditions and excessive ratio of horizontal to vertical in situ stresses. As the outcome of this study, the modified equations are suggested to use for estimating the plastic zone occurrence and its thickness around the tunnels with circular cross-section.

  • In order to clarify the mechanical behavior of welding crack and to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of welded parts in thick plate, it is very important to accurately predict the welding deformation and residual stress including transient state before welding. In this paper, the theory of a three-dimensional elasto-plastic problem for the analysis of mechanical phenomenon of welding joint on the plate is developed into an efficient and accurate method based on the finite element method, and then several examples are considered by using the proposed model. The results of numerical analyses are discussed in the viewpoint of the mechanical characteristics of the distribution of three-dimensional welding residual stresses, plastic strains and their production mechanism on the thick plate.

  • An elastic-plastic contact analysis is developed using a semi-analytical method. The elastic contact is solved within a Hertz theorem. The reciprocal theorem with initial strains is then introduced, to express the surface geometry as a function of contact stress and plastic strains. The irreversible nature of plasticity leads to an incremental formulation of the elastic-plastic contact problem, and an algorithm to solve this problem is set up. Closed form expression, which give residual stresses and surface displacements from plastic strains, are obtained by integration of the reciprocal theorem. The distribution of contact stress, residual stress and plastic strain are obtained by the changed surface geometry.

  • Cold expansion method is used to protect a fatigue fracture from fastener hole in the structure and aerospace industry. Cold expansion is that an oversized tapered mandrel goes through the hole and produces a compressive residual stress as well as plastic deformation around the hole. Here, mandrel shapes are one of the factors which are influenced on the residual stress distribution by cold expansion method. This paper, according to mandrel shapes (diameter of mandrel, length of mandrel and length of taper), we are performed a finite element analysis of residual stress distribution by cold expansion method. From this study, it has been found that diameter of mandrel and length of taper are an important factor which was generated a low compressive residual stress surround of fastener hole by cold expansion method.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the implant which has superior stress distribution and primary stability to others by using Instron test and finite element method. The model used in the experiment were cylinder type implant, tapered screw type implant, screw type implants. Recognizing that the number of samples were small and the lack of applying press-fit conditions to the cylinder type, we can make the following conclusions.

  • Stress patterns are created in the plastic spur gear tooth body by introducing a hole or a steel pin to improve stress distribution. Static analysis using finite element method is carried out to show the effect. The result shows that maximum stress as well as tooth tip displacement is dependent on the size and location of a hole or a steel pin. When a hole located on the tooth center line, the maximum static stress level and the tooth tip deflection is always higher than that of a solid gear. But, a considerable reduction in the maximum stress and tooth tip displacement is achieved by insertion of steel pin.

  • In this study, it was investigated the distribution of residual stress in the direction of loading between the root and toe the load fillet welds for thick steel plate. Residual stress distributions are measured by sectioning method which is one of stress-relaxation technique in welded joint, and analyzed by two dimensional finite element method on thermo-elasto-plastic theory under plane stress condition. These are compared the results of F.E.M analysis with the experimental result by stress-relaxation techniques. As a results, the following conclusion were obtained. (1) In the no penetration fillet welded joint specimen using mild steel plate with 25mm in thickness, the residual stress of loading direction near the root was about $10kg/mm^2$ tensile. (2) The tensile residual stress has been observed in fillet region of the fillet joint by F.E.M. analysis method. (3) The range of compressive residual stress distribution from the root was largest in the case of 5mm root penetration.

  • Zinc coated steel sheets have been widely used in automotive industry. High power laser welding has been used as an excellent welding means for thin sheets. The welding residual stress, which was brought in laser welding, causes making weak the mechanical strength. The purpose of this study is to get the residual stress distribution in various laser welding condition by FEM and verify the results by X-Ray diffraction. Welding residual stresses have been calculated by thermal elasto-plastic analysis using finite element method. Form the results, it can be known that the laser welding condition affects to distribution of the residual stress.
