Improving cyclic behavior of multi-level pipe damper using infill or slit diaphragm inside inner pipe

  • Analytical and experimental studies of the innovative pipe in pipe damper have been recently investigated by the authors. In this paper, by adding lead or zinc infill or slit diaphragm inside the inner pipe, it is tried to increase the equivalent viscous damping ratio improving the cyclic performance of the recently proposed multi-level control system. The damper consists of three main parts including the outer pipe, inner pipe and added complementary damping part. At first plastic deformations of the external pipe, then the internal pipe and particularly the added core and friction between them make the excellent multi-level damper act as an improved energy dissipation system. Several kinds of added lead or zinc infill and also different shapes of slit diaphragms are modeled inside the inner pipe and their effectiveness on hysteresis curves are investigated with nonlinear static analyses using finite element method by ABAQUS software. Results show that adding lead infill has no major effect on the damper stiffness while zinc infill and slit diaphragm increase damper stiffness sharply up to more than 10 times depending on the plate thickness and pipe diameter. Besides, metal infill increases the viscous damping ratio of dual damper ranging 6-9%. In addition, obtained hysteresis curves show that the multi-level control system as expected can reliably dissipate energy in different imposed energy levels.

  • Plastics is used to produce precise parts with an inclusion of a reinforcement material such as glass fiber or carbon fiber to improve the dimension accuracy. The plastic goods can be produced with inaccurate dimensions, low mechanical strength, or residual stress due to the over packing of cavity inside, if the filling balance of melt resin is not accomplished. To overcome this problem, it is necessary to design the runner system with the geometrical balance at the mold design stage. However, even if the balanced runner system is achieved, a severe filling imbalance is observed practically in a multi-cavity mold. In this study, experiments were performed with Taguchi method to achieve the filling balance in multi-cavity mold with a symmetric runner system, by the use of pure PA and PA with glass fiber 33%. The experimental results were investigated to understand the effect of related molding factors on the filling imbalance for two resins.

고주파 유도가열을 사용한 초박육 플라스틱 제품의 사출성형 (Injection Molding for a Ultra Thin-Wall Part using Induction Heating)

  • Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. Induction heating is an efficient way to heat material by means of an electric current that is caused to flow through the material or its container by electromagnetic induction. It has various applications such as heat treatment, brazing, welding, melting, and mold heating. The present study covers an experimental investigation of induction heating in order to rapidly raise the mold temperature. It is observed that the mold surface temperature is raised up to $200^{\circ}C$ in 2 seconds. This induction heating is applied to injection molding of a flexspline for a plastic harmonic drive, which has difficulty in cavity filling because its minimum thickness is only 0.35 mm. The induction heating is then successfully implemented on this ultra-thin wall molding by raising the mold surface temperature around the glass-transition temperature of the molding material.

TPE를 적용한 자동차 윈도우 모터커버의 개발 (Development of Automobile Windows Motor Cover by Thermoplastic Elastomer(TPE))

  • It was attempted to develop an auto part by over molding injection mold that produces precision products in high productivity with use of an eco-friendly TPE substitute material for NBR. NBR is currently used in motor gear cover, one of the key parts in motor module for auto doors. Gear cover is composed of plastics and rubber mostly today, which requires a two (2) step process for production using two presses of different types. A hot press is used at this time for forming the rubber, which has drawback of requiring a rather long forming time of 400 seconds for one forming process. Even though this difficulty is overcome by reducing production time through employment of multi-cavity molds, time for forming process must be shortened for improvement of the productivity eventually, and the existing method of insert injection for products that have been formed with plastic material must be outgrown. In this point of view, over molding injection using TPE has a big advantage. Forming time is shortened to 54 seconds, and working the two (2) processes in series by one (1) press could solve the durability problem caused by deflection of the plastics, not to mention shortening the process time. Enhancement of productivity by almost 80% and improvement in the accuracy of the product could thus be achieved.

Minimum cost design of overhead crane beam with box section strengthened by CFRP laminates

  • An overhead travelling crane structure of two doubly symmetric welded box beams is designed for minimum cost. The rails are placed over the inner webs of box beams. The following design constraints are considered: local buckling of web and flange plates, fatigue of the butt K weld under rail and fatigue of fillet welds joining the transverse diaphragms to the box beams, fatigue of CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) laminate, deflection constraint. For the formulation of constraints the relatively new standard for cranes EN 13001-3-1 (2010) is used. To fulfill the deflection constraint CFRP strengthening should be used. The application of CFRP materials in strengthening of steel and concrete structures are widely used in civil engineering applications due to their unique advantages. In our study, we wanted to show how the mechanical properties of traditional materials can be improved by the application of composite materials and how advanced materials and new production technologies can be applied. In the optimization the following cost parts are considered: material, assembly and welding of the steel structure, material and fabrication cost of CFRP strengthening. The optimization is performed by systematic search using a MathCAD program.

한국 소재산업의 미국시장 수출성과에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Exporting Outcomes of Korean Materials Industry in the U.S.A. Market)

  • Materials Industry has a very large ripple effect on national economic development. Nevertheless, Korea has been passing over importance of this Industry. So, this study examined competitiveness on ten chief exporting items to U.S.A market based on the understanding of vital role of materials industry in the national economy. Analyzing methods were Market Share, Trade Specialization Index(TSI), and Market Comparative Advantage(MCA) and the data were collected through parts and materials statistical data which produced by Korean Commerce and Industry Minister. From this study, following results were found. i) Highly ranked items of U.S.A market share were chemical fiber drapery weaving, synthetic fiber. These items commanded over 10% share of the same market and tire, steel wire occupied 9.05%, 8.65% respectively. ii) In searching trade balance aspects through TSI, tire and steel wire secured very powerful competitiveness among examined items in trading with U.S.A. while synthetic resins and other plastic material were very weak competitiveness in the same market. iii) Analysis results of market competitiveness by MCA, indicated that chemical fiber drapery weaving, synthetic fiber and tire ensured high-powered competitiveness in U.S.A Market. Therefore, these items would be positioned as main items in the market.

Ti-6Al-4V 샌드위치 패널제작을 위한 초소성/확산접합 기술개발 (Development of Superplastic Forming/Diffusion Bonding Technology for Ti-6Al-4V Sandwich Panels)

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloy is a critical strategic metal used in aerospace structure due to the high specific strength, toughness, durability, low density, corrosion resistance. Examples of application of this alloy are airframe structural components, aircraft gas turbine disks and blades. Forming of this alloy is not easy due to its high strength and low formability. However, this alloy shows superplastic properties that allow for large plastic deformation under certain conditions. Combination of superplastic forming and diffusion bonding(SPF/DB) processes of this alloy has been widely used to replace mechanically fastened structures with reduced weight and fabrication costs. In this study, superplastic forming/diffusion bonding technology has been developed for fabricating lightweight sandwich panels with Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The experimental results show the forming of titanium lightweight sandwich structure is successfully performed from 3 and 4 sheets of Ti-6Al-4V.

모조 러너를 이용한 계기판 사출성형의 게이트 위치 설계 (Design of Gate Location in Injection Molding of a Dashboard Using Dummy Runner)

  • Injection molding is widely used in producing various plastic parts due to its high productivity, and the demand for injection molded products with high precision is increasing. To achieve successful product quality and precision, the design of gating and runner system in injection mold is very important because it influences the melt flow into the cavity. Some deflects, such as weld lines and overpacking, can be effectively controlled with proper selection of gate locations. In the present study, the design of gate locations in injection molding of a dashboard fur automobiles was carried out with CAMP mold, a PC-based simulation system for injection molding. A dummy runner system was developed to simulate a runner system in order to increase the efficiency of the analysis procedure. The numbers and locations of gates were iteratively determined in the present investigation. In this procedure, an acceptable design was obtained in terms of reducing the maximum pressure and clamping force.

Design and Construction of a Pick-up Type Pulse Crop Harvester

  • Purpose: This aim of this study was to develop a pick-up type pulse crop harvester for harvesting cut and dried pulse crop. Methods: The pick-up type pulse crop harvester was designed and constructed. Its specifications and operating performance were investigated. Results: Compared with conventional bean harvesters, the pick-up type pulse crop harvester adopted seven rows of chains with tines to pick-up the cut and dried pulse crop on a flat or ridged field, two transverse threshing drums with steel wire teeth to reduce the threshing speed, and a tilt plate and plastic bucket elevator for conveying clean grain to reduce damage. The threshing speed and the oscillating frequency of the separating and cleaning parts according to crop type and condition could be varied easily to efficiently use engine power and to improve harvesting performance. The harvester showed forward speed ranges of 0 ~ 1.5 m/s during harvesting operation, and 0 ~ 2.5 m/s during road travelling. The pick-up width of the harvester was about 1 m. Conclusions: The pick-up type self-propelled 51.5 kW harvester was designed and constructed to harvest cut and dried pulse crop. The effective field capacity of the harvester was predicted as above 40 a/h.

자동차 타이로드 엔드 부품의 경량화에 관한 연구 (A Study of Light Weight of Tie Rod End in Auto Supplies)

  • This study is for the development of tie rod end, a parts of steering system, that would be changed with plastic material. The position of weld line is founded by the analysis of Mold Flow, computer software with FEM(Finite Element Method). Then new mold is designed by consideration with the locations of weld line. PA66(G/F 35%), PA6(G/F 45%), PET(G/F 45%) and PET(G/F 55%) are tested two types loading conditions for selecting suitable material, the requirement tensile load(more 19600N). PA6(G/F 45%) showed high mechanical properties in this study. And then, tensile strength was compared between conventional metal products and the injection molded products which were reinforced with 33%, 34%, 45%. 60% of glass fiber in matrix material. In the case of, the measured two types of tensile load values are 24500N (Method-1), 21560N (Method-2) and weight is decreased by 50% of conventional one.
