  • In this study, a plastic hardening constitutive equation for steels of polar class vessels at low temperature is proposed. The equation was derived using the experimental data obtained from tensile tests at room and low temperatures. Tensile tests at low temperature are both costly and time consuming because an expensive cold chamber is necessary and it takes too much time to cool down a specimen to set temperature. Using the proposed plastic hardening constitutive equation the plastic hardening characteristics of steels for polar class vessels at low temperature can be easily predicted from the tensile test results at room temperature.

  • A new and efficient algorithm for the integration of the thermal-elasto-plastic constitutive equation is proposed. While it falls into the category of the return mapping method, the algorithm adopts the three point approximation of plastic corrector within one time increment step. The results of its application to a von Mises-type thermal-elasto-plastic model with combined hardening and temperature-dependent material properties show that the accurate iso-error maps are obtained for both angular and radial errors. The accuracy achieved is because the predicted stress increment in a single step calculation follows the exact value closely not only at the end of the step but also through the whole path. Also, the comparison of the computational time for the new and other algorithms shows that the new one is very efficient.

  • Generally, the structural material shows rate dependent behaviors, which require to constitute different strain-stress relations according to strain rates. Conventional rate- independent constitutive equations used in general purpose finite analysis programs are inadequate for dynamic finite strain problems. In this paper, a rate dependent constitutive equation for elastic-plastic material was developed. The plastic stretch rate was modeled based on slip model with dislocation velocity and density so that there is no yielding condition, and no loading conditions. Non-linear hardening rule was also introduced for finite strain. Material constants of present constitutive equation were determined by experimental data of mild steel. The constitutive equation was applied to uniaxile tension. It was appeared that the present constitutive equation well simulates rate dependent behaviors of mild steel.

  • It is difficult to predict material behavior of forming process because the plastic instable flow phenomenon happens in practical forming process I. e. upsetting backward extrusion piercing indentation. In view of the direct relationship between instable material flow and quality defects of the products we should find out their phenomena, In this study we introduced the plastic spin and the kinematic hardening considering the kinematic hardening constitutive equation for rate-dependent material. Also analysis of upset forging is carried out using the rigid plastic FEM with Al7075

  • In recent years. finite element methods have been used with increasing effectiveness in analysis of displacements and stresses within soil masses. However, one of the weakest links in the analytical representations used in these methods is the models of the material behaviour. Herein is discribed a modification to the finite element methods that allows solution problems with realistic stress-strain relation for soils. A finite element program for the precision prediction of the stress distribution within foundation has been developed using the elasto-plastic Work-Hardening model. The developed program is verified by comparing the results of this study with the tested results for Sacramento river sand. The main results obtained from the numerical examples are as follows: The vertical total stress increments are insensitive to drainage and constitutive equation of materials. The horizontal total stress increments are considerably affected by the drainage and constitutive equation of materials. The maximum shear stresses are affected by the drainage only in elasto-ptastic meterirals. The excess pore water pressures and the volumetric strains not only are considerably affected by the constitutive equation of materials. but also have almost similar distribution.

  • The hardening and the constitutive equation based on the crystal plasticity are introduced for the numerical simulation of hemispherical sheet metal forming. For calculating the deformation and the stress of the crystal, Taylor's model of the crystalline aggregate is employed. The hardening is evaluated by using the Taylor factor, the critical resolved shear stress of the slip system, and the sum of the crystallographic shears. During the hemispherical forming process, the texture of the sheet metal is evolved by the plastic deformation of the crystal. By calculating the Euler angles of the BCC sheet, the texture evolution of the sheet is traced during the forming process. Deformation texture of the BCC sheet is represented by using the pole figure. The comparison of the strain distribution and punch force in the hemispherical forming process between the prediction using crystal plasticity and experiment shows the verification of the crystal plasticity-based formulation and the accuracy of the hardening and constitutive equation obtained from the crystal plasticity.

  • Various soil behaviors usually occurring in the geotechnical problems, such as, cutting and embankments, stability of slope, seepage, consolidations, shearing failures and liquefaction, should be predicted and analyzed in any way. An approach of these predictions may be followed by the development of the constitutive equations as first and subsequently solved by numerical methods. The purpose of this paper is develop the constitutive equation of sands uder monotonic or cyclic loadings. The constitutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. And the equation is included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effects and Pender's theory. The model is later evaluated and confirmed the validity by the test data of Ottawa sand, Banwol sand Hongseong sand. The following conclustions may be drawn: 1. The consititutive equation which is based on elasto-plastic theory, modified anisotropic consolidated stress parpameter by Sekiguchi et al and Pender's theory is derived. The equation in included a new stress parameter, hardening function, Bauschinger's effect and Pender's theory. 2. For Ottawa sand, the result of the constitutive equation shows a better agreement than that of Oka et al. The result of axial strain agrees well with the tested data. However, the result of horizontal strain is little bit off for the cyclic loadings or large stress. It is thought that the deviation may be improved by considering Poisson's ratio and precise measurement of shear modulus. 3. Banwol sand is used for the strain and stress tests with different relative densitites and confining pressures. The predeicted result shows a good agreement with the tested data because the required material parameters were directly measurd and determined form this laboratory. 4. For Hongseong sand, the tests under same amplitude of cyclic deviatoric stress shows a similar result with the tested data in absolute strain. It shows the acute shape of turning point because the sine wave of input is used in the test but the serrated wave in prediction.

  • A simplified finite element analysis method is proposed to calculate elasto-plastic responses of general hardening materials. The method provides an effective tool to calculate structural elasto-plastic responses. Numerical examples have demonstrated that its computational efficiency is very much higher than that of the incremental elasto-plastic finite element analysis, and computational results are accurate enough to meet the need of engineering practice. Compared with the general elasto-plastic incremental finite element analysis, the proposed method can avoid the incremental iteration of nodal displacements and the constitutive equation integration at each Gauss integral point, and computational results are accurate enough to meet the need of engineering practice.

  • In this paper a new constitutive model for ductile materials was proposed. This model can describe the material degradation due to the evolution of isotropic damage during elasto-platic deformation. The plastic flow rule was derived under the framework of thermodynamic approach of continuum damage mechanics(CDM) in which plastic strain hardening parameters and isotropic damage were taken as thermodynamic state variables. And the process to determine material constants for constitutive model using an experimental data was presented.

  • Since the actuators with small- scale structures may be exposed to external reciprocal actions lead to create undesirable loads causing instability, the buckling behaviors of them are interested to make reliable or accurate actions. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze plastic buckling behavior of the micro beam structures by adopting a Conventional Mechanism-based Strain Gradient plasticity (CMSG) theory. The effect of length scale on critical force is considered for three types of boundary conditions, i.e. the simply supported, cantilever and clamped - simply supported micro beams. For each case, the stability equations of the buckling are calculated to obtain related critical forces. The constitutive equation involves work hardening phenomenon through defining an index of multiple plastic hardening exponent. In addition, the Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis is used for kinematic of deflection. Corresponding to each length scale and index of the plastic work hardening, the critical forces are determined to compare them together.
