  • The Buckling-Restrained Braces (BRB) has been developed to inhibit buckling and exhibit stable behavior under both tensile and compressive cycles. In this study, an experimental has been conducted by using the strength of its members and loading protocols as parameters to evaluate the structural performance of BRB (without in-filled concrete). Specimens are composed of an inner core and an outer tube with different steel strengths. When high-strength steels were used as inner cores, the ductility of BRB decreasedm and the requirements (Cumulative Plastic Ductility) of the AISC Seismic Provisions were not satisfied. However, when high-strength steels were used as inner cores instead of conventional strength steel cores, the maximum capacity increased significantly and displayed similar performance in total energy dissipation.

  • Tubular steel sections are widespread all over the world because of their strength and aesthetic appearance. Tubular steel members may exhibit local buckling such as elephant foot or overall buckling under extreme compression load. Recently, external bonding of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) sheets for strengthening these members has been explored through experimental research. This paper presents three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate the structural behavior of strengthening tubular steel members with FRP against local and overall buckling phenomena. Out-of-roundness and out-of-straightness imperfections were introduced to the numerical models to simulate the elephant foot and overall buckling, respectively. The nonlinear analysis preferences such as the integration scheme of the shell elements, the algorithm for solution of nonlinear equations, the loading procedure, the bisection limits for the load increments, and the convergence criteria were set, appropriately enough, to successfully track the sophisticated buckling deformations. The agreement between the results of both the presented FEA and the experimental research was evident. The FEA results demonstrated the power of the presented rigorous FEA in monitoring the plastic strain distribution and the buckling phenomena (initiation and propagation). Consequently, the buckling process was interpreted for each mode (elephant foot and overall) into three sequential stages. Furthermore, the influence of FRP layers on the nonlinear analysis preferences and the results was presented.

  • The brace is often used to resist lateral force such as that exerted by an earthquake. Because of buckling at bifurcation load, the brace shows unstable hysteretic characteristics in the plastic zone. Therefore, in this study, the brace with damper that consists of slit plates were suggested on the purpose of preventing buckling and increasing plastic deformation capacity. The experimental results regarding the brace member were analyzed and the feasibility was also examined.

  • In AASHTO LRFD (2007), a compact section is defined as a section in which no premature failure caused by local buckling of web and flange plate or later buckling occurs before the section reaches the plastic moment, Mp. The current AASHTO LRFD (2007) provides the compact section requirement by limiting the web slenderness only for webs without longitudinal stiffeners. The role of longitudinal stiffener is to increase the web buckling strength caused flexure. Although a web does not satisfy the compactness requirement without longitudinal stiffeners, the web buckling can be prevented by use of valid longitudinal stiffeners. Therefore, the web may be able to reach the plastic moment. However, the reason why a longitudinal stiffener may not be used to satisfy compactness requirement is not cleary explained in AASHTO LRFD (2007). In this study, the buckling and ultimate strength behaviors of stiffened webs subjected to bending are investigated through the linear buckling and nonlinear finite element analysis. It is found that steel plate girders having webs that do not satisfy the compactness requirement are able to reach the plastic moment if the longitudinal stiffeners have sufficient rigidities and are properly located. From a nonlinear regression analysis of the results, a new compactness requirement is suggested for webs stiffened with one longitudinal stiffener.

  • This paper presents the analytical results for the prediction of elastical local buckling stress of fiber reinforced plastic (orthotropic) structural shapes manufactured from pultrusion process. In the derivation, existing Bleich's approach which was originally derived for the isotropic structural shapes was extended and non-dimensionalized parameters which can simplify the numerical calculations were adopted. Analytical results were compared with reported closed-form solutions and experimental results. It is graphically shown that the results can be used effectively to predict the local buckling stress of pultruded fiber reinforced plastic structural shapes. Numerical results were presented graphically to estimate the local buckling stress of various cross-sectional dimensions and lengths of columns. In addition, limits of width to thickness ratio of flange and web of pultruded structural shapes were suggested in which material failure or overall buckling occurs prior to local buckling.

  • To improve the land use of urban, Construction of the circular steel column is required recently. The circular steel columns have a advantage for improving a load carrying rapacity as wall as reducing a effective section area. However, the circular steel columns under service load, such as earthquake, shows a tendency to cause local buckling and large deformation. To prevent these phenomena, use of longitudinal stiffeners is considered. The application of longitudinal stiffeners at the circular steel columns is expected to increase a load carrying capacity, buckling strength and seismic performance of circular steel column. However, increasing the loading carving rapacity of buckling which constructed the longitudinal stiffeners, was not investigated yet. Therefore it needs study on effect of longitudinal stiffener in pipe-section steel pier. In this study, the load rallying capacity of buckling of steel pier was investigated by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis considered geometrical and material non-linearity. Also, this study investigated the effect of longitudinal stiffeners on loading carrying capacity of buckling and the relationship between width and thickness of longitudinal stiffeners. And also, a Influence of longitudinal stiffeners on seismic performance of circular steel columns was investigated by numerical analysis

  • This study discusses on the experimental and analytical results of the global buckling tests, carried out on aluminum alloy double layer space grids composed of tubular members, ball joints and connecting bolts at the member ends, with the purpose of demonstrating the effectiveness of a simplified analysis method using an equivalent slenderness ratio for the members. Because very few experiments have been carried out on this type of aluminum space grids, the buckling behavior is investigated experimentally over the post buckling regions using several space grid specimen with various values for the member slenderness ratio. The observed behavior duping the experiments is compared with the analytically obtained results. The comparison is made based on two different schemes; one on the plastic hinge method considering a bending moment-axial force interaction for members and the other on a method using an equivalent slenderness ratio. It is confirmed that the equivalent slenderness method can be effectively applied, even in the post buckling regions, once the effects of the rotational rigidity at the ball joints are appropriately evaluated, because the rigidity controls the buckling behavior. The effectiveness of the equivalent slenderness method will be widely utilized for estimation of the ultimate strength, even in post buckling regions for large span aluminum space grids composed of an extreme large number of nodes and members.

  • This paper deals with the buckling and vibration analysis of plate with a hole. We knew that in this paper, as aspect ratio rises in design parameter, the buckling strength and the natural frequency of laminated composite plate decrease and as diameter of hole for width of plate rises, the buckling strength decrease but the natural frequency increase. Also this paper compared the CFRP laminated composit plate with the hybrid composite plate, and proposed that the hybrid composite plate is stronger than the CFRP composite plate.

  • In this paper, we work with steel circular tubes and propose analysis model which can consider local buckling that it has an effect on failure of steel structures and induce the relation between loading and deformation. First of all, in respect to axial symmetry local buckling, which is simplest case, elasto-plastic behavior acting only axial loads is object Therefore, it suggests analysis model for axial symmetry local buckling. And that is explainable the process from increasing internal force to decreasing passing maximum internal force. Besides, we induce the relation between the axial force and axial deformation.
