  • Objectives : This experiment was done to evaluate the effects of Hyuntogobon-hwan(HTG) on antioxidant capability and lipidic concentration in blood, both of which are presumed to be related to aging. Methods : 12 week-old SD rats were divided into controlled group, uncontrolled group and HTG group. As controlled and HTG groups were given subcutaneous injection of D-galactose(50mg/kg/rat), at the same time HTG group was administered extract of Hyuntogobon-hwan(270mg/200g). HTG injections continued for 6 weeks. After initial injections, blood was drawn from each group and the following were measured: the activity of SOD, GSH-px, catalase in erythrocytes, TSARS value, concentration of total lipid, tryglyceride in blood plasma. Results : The activities of SOD and GSH-px in erythrocytes increased significantly in HTG group compared with controlled group. The activity of catalase seemed to increase slightly, but it was barely noticeable. The concentration of total lipid in plasma decreased significantly in HTG group compared with controlled group. The value of TBARS in plasma seemed to decrease slightly, but it was barely noticeable. Conclusions : According to the above results, Hyuntogobon-hwan has an influence on aging by virtue of activation of antioxidative enzyme systems in erythrocytes and concentrations of lipid in blood plasma.

  • Marc et al. reported that diazepam increased plasma corticosterone level and Dasgupta et al. suggested that chlordiazepoxide(CDP) supressed the adrenal response to ACTH. In this paper, the influence of CDP on the changes of blood sugar and plasma corticosterone level induced by ACTH and picrotoxin were investigated in male mice. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1) The blood sugar and plasma corticosterone level were increased by CDP, ACTH, and picrotoxin, respectively. 2) The hyperglycemia induced by ACTH and picrotoxin were not affected by the CDP pretreatment. 3) The increase of plasma corticosterone level induced by ACTH was inhibited by the CDP pretreatment. 4) The increase of plasma corticosterone level appeared 30 minutes after picrotoxin injection was slightly enhanced, but the level of 120 minutes after picrotoxin injection was significantly inhibited by the CDP pretreatment.

  • Utility boiler operators seeking to gain the greatest economic advantage from their units are faced with three challenges, namely the obligatory light-up fuel costs, the additional expense of supplementary fuel firing should they wish to use a cheaper fuel that may be beyond the original burner manufacturer’s stability and combustion performance assurances and the immediate environmental impact of both. The novel use of plasma arc technology can provide a solution to these challenges. This paper introduces the work being undertaken through a joint collaboration between the EU, Kazahkstan and Russia in order to develop a tried and tested engineering methodology and a mathematical based application and sensitivity analysis approach for the design and optimisation stage of these plasma devices that, as a consequence, their assist in their universal introduction.

  • The aim of this study was to compare the plasma progesterone concentrations during gestation in 4 breeds of companion bitches. When Day 0 was timed the first male acceptance, plasma progesterone were 1.8 ± 0.4 ng/ml (Mean ± SD) at Day 0 and increased constantly with 58.5 ± 8.9 ng/ml a peak at Day 20. Thereafter plasma progesterone concentrations was decreased below 1.0 ng/ml with 0.7 ± 0.2 g/ml at Day 65. There were no statistically significant differences of plasma progesterone concentrations in the each day of gestation and in litter size among the companion bitches (p < 0.01). These results indicated that the plasma progesterone concentrations was useful method for estimating optimal breeding time, ovulation time, the time of onset of parturition, properly planned elective cesarean section and abortion time in companion bitches.

  • Background: Morphine has been commonly used for postoperative pain control. We measured plasma concentrations of morphine and compared the efficacy and safety of continuous epidural analgesia (CEA) using morphinebupivacaine with intravenous patient controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) with morphine for 48 hrs after the end of the operation. Methods: Nineteen patients undergoing Mile's operation were assigned to receive a morphine loading dose of 5 mg followed by IV-PCA with 0.1% morphine (IV-PCA group, n = 9) or a morphine loading dose of 2 mg and 0.125% bupivacaine 10 ml, followed by CEA with 0.004% morphine and 0.075% bupivacaine at a rate of 5 ml/hr (CEA group, n = 10). The plasma concentrations of morphine were measured and visual analog scales (VAS) for pain were recorded at 1, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hr postoperatively and the effects on respiration and any other side effects were noted. Results: The mean maximal and minimal levels of plasma morphine were $40.2{\pm}21.2\;ng/ml$ and $23.4{\pm}9.7\;ng/ml$ for the IV-PCA group and $11.8{\pm}3.5\;ng/ml$ and $8.2{\pm}1.9\;ng/ml$ for the CEA group, respectively. Resting and dynamic pain scores were significantly lower in the CEA group than in the IV-PCA group. There were no significant differences for the effects on respiration and for any side effects between the two groups. Conclusions: We evaluated plasma concentrations of morphine with CEA using morphine-bupivacaine and IV-PCA using morphine for the postoperative pain control. The CEA group had better postoperative analgesia than that of the IV-PCA group and the incidence of side effects were not significantly different between the two groups.

  • The $^{67}Ga$ has somewhat long physical and biological half livies with 78 hours and 600 hours respectively, so we can get $^{67}Ga-scan$ images for 3 or more days after once injection of $^{67}Ga$. Furthermore $^{67}Ga$ scan would be useful to search some residual tumors after surgical removal of the tumors trapped with $^{67}Ga$. However $^{67}Ga$ bound with plasma proteins would be delayed in plasma clearance as approximately 10% of the dose remains in the plasma at 24 hours. If the remained $^{67}Ga$ in the plasma is redistributed into the surgical wound, we wouldn't evaluate the degree of the tumor remained after surgery. So the authors examined the amounts of the remained blood $^{67}Ga$ and the redistribution of the blood $^{67}Ga$ into the artificial wound with S or more centimeters in the diameter at the neck and chest of the rabbits. The results were as follows; 1) The $^{67}Ga$ remained in the plasma were 12%, 5.7%, 4.2% at 24, 48 and 72 hours after $^{67}Ga$ injection respectively. 2) The blood $^{67}Ga$ were redistributed into the artificial wound with 5.9% at 48 hours and 6.9% at 72 hours after $^{67}Ga$ injection.

  • In the present study, we examined the effect of pertussis toxin (PTX) administered centrally in a variety of stress-induced blood glucose level. Mice were exposed to stress after the pretreatment of PTX (0.05 or 0.1 mg) i.c.v. or i.t. once for 6 days. Blood glucose level was measured at 0, 30, 60 and 120 min after stress stimulation. The blood glucose level was increased in all stress groups. The blood glucose level reached at maximum level after 30 min of stress stimulation and returned to a normal level after 2 h of stress stimulation in restraint stress, physical, and emotional stress groups. The blood glucose level induced by cold-water swimming stress was gradually increased up to 1 h and returned to the normal level. The intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) or intrathecal (i.t.) pretreatment with PTX, a $G_i$ inhibitor, alone produced a hypoglycemia and almost abolished the elevation of the blood level induced by stress stimulation. The central pretreatment with PTX caused a reduction of plasma insulin level, whereas plasma corticosterone level was further up-regulated in all stress models. Our results suggest that the hyperglycemia produced by physical stress, emotional stress, restraint stress, and the cold-water swimming stress appear to be mediated by activation of centrally located PTX-sensitive G proteins. The reduction of blood glucose level by PTX appears to due to the reduction of plasma insulin level. The reduction of blood glucose level by PTX was accompanied by the reduction of plasma insulin level. Plasma corticosterone level up-regulation by PTX in stress models may be due to a blood glucose homeostatic mechanism.

  • Nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma has attracted great interest for biomedical applications. The plasma consists of charged particles, radicals, and a strong electric field as the fourth state of matter. This study evaluated the change in the surface roughness after tooth bleaching by plasma in combination with a low concentration (15%) of carbamide peroxide, specifically whether the application of plasma produced detriments, such as demineralization and structural change, with the goal of efficient and safe tooth bleaching. After being combined with plasma and 15% carbamide peroxide, the hydroxyapatite surface was significantly smoother with a low roughness average value. Tooth bleaching with 15% carbamide peroxide alone produced an irregular surface and increased the surface roughness with high roughness average value. Tooth bleaching with plasma resulted in no significant variations in hydroxyapatite in terms of change in surface roughness and surface topography. The application of tooth bleaching with plasma is not deleterious to dental hard tissue, implicating it as a safe tooth bleaching technique.

  • The changes of plasma renin activity, aldosterone concentration, serum sodium-, and potassium levels were studied before and after the water loading followed by diuretics injection. The materials were: 13 non-, 11 normal-, and 11 toxemic pregnancy cases. The plasma renin activity and aldosterone concentration of the cord and postpartum blood were also measured. Following were the results: 1. The plasma renin activity was elevated significantly in normal pregnancy, and slightly in toxemic pregnancy. The serum sodium levels were decreased in pregnancy. 2. The plasma aldosterone concentration was slightly decreased in normal pregnancy, and slightly increased in toxemic pregnancy, however, statistically insignificant. 3. The plasma renin activity of the cord and postpartum blood were lower than those of pregnancy cases. 4. The changes of plasma renin activity after the diuretic administration showed an initial increase, which recovered within 2 hours. These changes were the least in normal pregnancy, and the most in toxemic pregnancy. 5. The changes of plasma aldosterone concentration after the diuretic administration were similar to those of plasma renin activity, although the variations were not so wide.

  • We have characterized the parametric and functional properties of live cell and cancer cell according to plasma treatment conditions using Atmospheric Pressure (AP) Plasma with uniquely designed low temperature arc-free unit. AP plasma system showed very highly efficient capabilities of reacting and interfacing directly with live and cancer cells. The parametric results with the types of gases, applied power, applied gap, and process times on cells will be presented in accordance with functional studies of the works. The growth of cancer cells is directly influenced by AP plasma exposure with evaluating plasma conditions in several human cancer cells and understanding how plasma exposure alters molecular signaling pathways. The cells exhibit a slower or faster growth rates compared with untreated cells, depending on the cell types. These results strongly support the conclusion that alterations in one or more of each gene are responsible, at least in part, for plasma-induced apoptosis in cancer cells. In addition, it also will be presented that AP plasma has an important role for the improvement of sensor performance due to excellent interface property between enzyme and metal electrode for bio sensor manufacturing process.
