  • Charge-pump high voltage inverter for Plasma backlight using CIM(Current Injection Method) is proposed in this paper. Adoption of ERC(Energy Recovery Circuit) is a new attempt in high voltage inverter so that it is not only energy recovery but also improvement of discharge stability and system unstability which is interrupted by noise. Using a charge-pump technique enables low voltage switches to be usable, the cost can be reduced. CIM is adopted to achieve high speed energy recovery in proposed circuit. Operations of the proposed circuit are analyzed for each mode. The proposed circuit is verified to be applicable on a 32 inch plasma backlight panel by experimental results.

  • A 30Watt inverter with 300: 1 dimming capability for high luminance, one cell, surface discharge plasma light source for LCD backlight was designed and tested. It was possible to achieve 300:1 dimming control by using the push-pull type inverter with burst-mode dimming control. The surface discharge plasma light cell with luminance of more than 5, 260 cd/$m^2$ was successfully operated.

  • The discharge characteristics of a flat plasma backlight with long electrode gap are investigated. The effect of operating voltage and repetition rate on brightness and luminance efficiency is investigated. A new high efficacy mode is found at low frequencies around 15-40 KHz; a lumen efficacy of 15.3 lm/W is achieved at a luminance of $2400\;cd/m^2$. In the high brightness mode, present at high voltage, we find a maximum luminance of $5900\;cd/m^2$ at 30KHz.

  • Conventional backlight for liquid crystal display (LCD) uses mercury which leads to environmental pollution. In this study, characteristics of AC coplanar type mercury-free plasma flat lamp have been studied. Pollution-free Xe-He is adopted as a discharge gas system. Since the Xe gas has a lower efficiency in generating vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) than mercury, the improvement of luminance and luminous efficiency in the Xe gas system is very important. The electrode, dielectric, and phosphor layers constituting lamp are formed on the bottom glass by the screen printing method. The effects of pulse shape, on-time, and pulse frequency on the luminance and luminous efficiency have been examined. For Xe(5%)-He gas, the lamp exhibits higher efficiency with sharper pulse shape, higher peak voltage, and shorter pulse on-time (up to 2 $\mu\textrm{s}$). Higher efficiency and lower consumption of power were obtained at 30 kHz than at 60 kHz. The collision of ion to bottom electrodes is a dominant factor to raise the lamp temperature. Therefore the high voltage and low current discharge system is necessary for reduction of the lamp temperature as well as for enhancement of the luminous efficiency.

  • Characteristic properties of backlight arraying external electrode fluorescent lamps has been investigated indriving with a square wave from switch inverters. In the backlight of 17 inch-diagonal with 12 lamps, the efficiency of 65-70 1m/W with the luminance of 5,000-10,000 cd/$\textrm m^2$ has been achieved in the frequency range 40-80 kHz where the higher frequency provides the lower operating voltage in the range 1.0-2.0 kV. In the frequency above 80 kHz, a stable and an uniform luminance in the backlight panel can not be achieved.

  • The discharge phenomena in a flat fluorescent lamp for the backlight unit of liquid crystal displays are simulated by sung a two-dimensional fluid model. The numerical methods for the calculation of plasma dynamics and the radiation transport are introduced for the discharge simulation and for the transmission of the vacuum ultraviolet lights. The simulation results are presented to compare the luminance and the luminance efficacy with the variation of gas pressure, gas mixture ratio, driving voltage, and frequency.

  • A two-dimensional fluid simulation code has been developed in order to investigate discharge phenomena and to improve plasma luminous efficiency in a Hg flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) for an LCD backlight unit. In this study, the method of a two-dimensional fluid simulation for FFL is explained and the simulation results of Hg-Ar-Ne mixture gas are presented for the enhancement of the luminance efficiency. The effects of various parameters, such as driving voltage, frequency, and gas mixture ratio, are investigated. The luminance efficiency increased with increasing fraction of mercury but the increasing fraction of argon did not affect the efficiency much.
