Background: : Chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT) is an important cause of morbitity in patients with cancer. Aim: To investigate the effect of the baseline plasma D-dimer level, an important marker for thrombotic activity, on chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia in patients with stage III colon cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 43 (28 men) eligible patients were divided into two groups according to whether they exhibited chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia: Group 1 (n=21) and Group 2 (n=22). Comparison was made using demographic, histopathologic, and laboratory variables. Additionally, baseline plasma D-dimer levels underwent receiver operation characteristics curve analysis, and areas under the curve were calculated. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative likelihood rates were then determined. Results: The incidence of chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia had a significant correlation with baseline platelet count (r=0.568, P=0.031) and baseline plasma D-dimer levels (r=0.617, P=0.036). When the cut-off point for the latter was set as 498 ng/mL, the area under the curve was 0.89 (95%CI: 0.74-0.93), the sensitivity was 91.4%, the specificity was 89.7%, the positive likelihood rate was 3.64 and the negative likelihood rate was 0.24 for chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia diagnosis. Conclusions: The baseline level of plasma D-dimer could help to differentiate high-risk patients for chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia.

The administration of soluble glass bolus (SGB) with cobalt (Co), selenium (Se) and copper (Cu), among 50 upgraded does in the farm of Central Luzon State University, Philippines, was effective in improving the mineral status of the animals. After one year, blood Se and plasma Cu had been significantly increased; subsequently plasma molybdenum (Mo) level had been reduced, but other macro-minerals were not affected. Soluble glass bolus supplementation did not affect plasma calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sodium (Na), although the treated does had higher plasma phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and zinc (Zn) in some parts of the year. Hematocrit count of the animals was also improved reaching 32% level after 9 months; although it was still 6% below the lower limit of a normal range of 38 to 45%. The desired improvement in Se, Cu and Mo was not able to influence live weight among the animals. After one year, body weight was not significantly different from the control group of animals. Nevertheless, the study showed the effectiveness of SGB in improving Cu and Se levels, and subsequently reducing the plasma Mo levels of grazing goats in a typical Philippine farm.
Effect of sodium restriction with or without potassium supplement and furosemide diuresis on plasma aldosterone response to mild hemorrhage were studied in normotensive young volunteers. After an overnight fast, blood were drawn just before and 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 90, and 120 minutes after the $^3H$-aldosterone injection. The sum of blood delivered reached over 100ml(during two hours). Plasma aldosterone and renin were measured by means of radioimmunoassay. The results were as followed; 1. Hemorrhage resulted in a moderate increase in plasma aldosterone level of volunteers with normal diet. 2. The mean figures of plasma aldosterone in subjects with sodium restriction and diuresis were likewise significantly increased by hemorrhage, however, the figure of the subjects with potassium supplement who already shown higher plasma level was without effect on hemorrhage. 3. Hemorrhage produced slight decrease in serum sodium concentration in every experimental conditions, although the changes were not significant. 4. Plasma renin activities after the hemorrhage followed a similar pattern with that of aldosterone, increased during sodium restriction or diuresis and unaffected during potassium supplement.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of dietary magenesium on stress reactions in rats having abdominal surgery. Sixty three male rats of sprague-dawley strain were blocked into 3 groups : rats fed regular magnesium (0.05% Mg: control) rats receiving regular magnesium with surgery(Mg-adeq : S) Five weeks after feeding abdominal surgery was performed and randomly chosen 7 rats from each group were sacrificed on 1, 3 and 5 days after surgery. Te following were found ; 1) Rats fed marginal magnesium showed significantly elevated urinary urea nitrogen urinary potassium and plasma glucose compared controls only one day after abdominal surgery but not 3 days or 5 days after surgery 2) Rats fed adequate magnesium did not show any significant change in metabolic stress indicator after surgery. 3) Plasma free fatty acid and cortisol level were not different among groups. 4) Decreased plasma magnesium and potassium level were found in rats fed marginal magne-sium and sacrificed one day and three days after surgery.

In order to elucidate the physiological function of circulating IGF-I on muscle protein synthesis in the chicken under malnutritional conditions, we administrated recombinant chicken IGF-I using a osmotic mini pump to fasted young chickens and measured the rate of muscle protein synthesis and plasma metabolite. The pumps delivered IGF-I at the rate of $22{\mu}g/d\{300{\mu}g{\cdot}(kg\;body\;weight{\cdot}d)^{-1}\}$. Fractional rate of protein synthesis in the muscle was measured using a large dose injection of L-[$2,6-^3H$]phenylalanine. Constant infusion of chicken IGF-I did not affect plasma glucose level. Significant interaction between dietary treatment and IGF-I infusion was observed in plasma NEFA and total cholesterol concentrations. When chicks were fasted, IGF-I infusion decreased plasma NEFA and total cholesterol concentrations. On the other hand, IGF-I administration did not affect plasma levels of both metabolites. Fasting reduced plasma triglyceride concentration significantly. IGF-I infusion also decreased the level of plasma triglyceride. Plasma IGF-I concentration of young chickens was halved by fasting for 1 d. IGF-I infusion using an osmotic minipump for 1 d increased plasma IGF-I concentration in fasted chicks to the level of fed chicks. Fasting decreased body weight and the loss of body weight was significantly ameliorated by IGF-I infusion. There was a significant interaction between dietary treatment and IGF-I infusion in the fractional rate of breast muscle protein synthesis. There was no effect of IGF-I infusion on muscle protein synthesis in fed chicks. Muscle protein synthesis reduced by fasting was ameliorated by IGF-I infusion, but did not reach to the level of fed control. Muscle weight of fasted chicks infused with IGF-I was similar to fasted birds without IGF-I infusion, which suggests that muscle protein degradation would be increased by IGF-I infusion as well as protein synthesis in fasted chicks.

For the purpose of obtaining the index that represents the contaminated status due to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in the human body, the authors investigated the contents of PCB in the plasma of 183 subjects who were not exposured to the massive amount of PCB occupationaly in the past. The obtained results were as follows; 1. The mean contents of PCB in plasma were 3.35 $\pm$ 1.48 ppb in male and 3.04 $\pm$ 1.06 ppb in female. $Cl_4$ and $Cl_3$ were the main isomers in both sexes. 2. The distribution of total-PCB by the age group was showed increasing tendency with the age in both sexes. 3. The tendency of freqyency distribution of total-PCB level were skewed to the higher level in malo and skewed to the lower level in female. 4. There was satistically significant interrelationship between age and total-PCB in plasma in both sexes.
Following importation of temperate Australian breeds of sheep into Malaysia, it was demonstrated that there was variability in libido and semen productivity. Consequently, a study was conducted to determine the concentration of testosterone and relate it with libido and semen production. A total of 10 rams each of Dorset Horn, Cross of Merino with Border Leicester, Siamese Long Tail, Suffolk and local Malin were used to study the composition of testosterone in the blood plasma of these breeds. The study showed that there was significant difference between the testosterone level of different breeds in Spring and Summer but not in Autumn and Winter. The difference was pronounced in August and January. A significant difference (p > 0.05) was recorded in the testosterone levels of the different breeds during the day where Malin had better libido compared to the other breeds. There was no significant difference between the testosterone levels of the different breeds at night. The testosterone level of Suffolk, however, was elevated throughout the night (2.00 ng/ml and over) which resulted in better libido at night compared to the other breeds.

In order to observe the effect of tannin on plasma lipid status in human, tannin was supplemented with increasing amounts from 0 to 0.5, 1.0, 2.5g/d early week until 4th week. The results obtained from this research are a follows. Concentration of total lipid in plasma was significantly lower compared to the control group when the level of tannin supplementation was 0.5g/day while the level of tannin 1.0g/day and 2.5g/day did not affect to change the total lipid level. There seems to be no obvious improvement of the plasm lipid status respect to different tannin levels. Despite the result, the excretion of total bile acids in feces was increased and total lipid in plasma was reduced significantly during first time supplementation compared the control.
Hydroxyapatite(HA) was spray-coated to alloy substrate(Ti-6Al-4V) using plasma-spray process for bioceramic application The coating morphology composition and crystallinity were influenced by following process parameters ; stand-off distance spray power level and auxiliary gas pressure. These parameters have been systematically varied in the present study to evaluate their relative influence on the coating qual-ity and to seek an optimum spraying condition. Amorphicity and decomposition of HA increased with stand-off distance and the imperfect coating layer was obtained at the short stant-off distance (55mm). The cry-stallinity of HA coating decreased with spray power level and auxiliary gas pressure but the bond strength between the HA coated layer and Ti alloy substrate increased with the spray power level.

Several reports have demonstrated the wide range of nonthermal plasma applications in biomedical field including cancers, diabetics, wound healing and cosmetics. Recently, it has been shown that plasma is able to modulate the p38 MAPK and JUN level in cells which has a crucial role in melanin synthesis and skin pigmentation. Therefore we investigated the effect of plasma on melanogenesis in-vitro using melanoma (B16F10) cells and in-vivo using mouse and zebra fish. To investigate the mechanism of plasma action, plasma device characteristics were measured, reactive species inside and outside the cells were detected, and western blot was performed to find the signaling pathway involved in melanin activation in-vitro and in-vivo. This is the first report presenting the role of nonthermal plasma for melanogenesis which provides a new perspective of plasma in the field of dermatology.
