  • For the purpose of sweet potato varietal improvement, yulmi, shinyulmi, gunmi, hongmi, and seonmi, whose source and sink are different, were cultivated at different planting densities, and then defoliation at initial stage of tuberous root weight increase on the relation of source and sink was observed as follows. The response of stem and leaf and tuberous root weight by planting density and defoliation rate of sweet potato varieties was different. Stem and leaf weight per m$^2$ increased along with dense planting by the following order; shinyulmi> seonmi> hongmi> gunmi> yulmi. Tuberous root number per m$^2$ was the most at 75$\times$20cm planting density, showing seonmi the most number. The number of stem and leaf and tuberous root increased along with the lowered rate of defoliation. In case of 75$\times$10cm and 75$\times$20cm planting density, tuberous root weight increased by increase of stem and leaf weight up to 50% defoliation and the difference of stem and leaf and tuberous root number was low as defoliation rate increases. The tuberous root and total dry weight matter was the most at 75$\times$20cm planting density. The increase and decrease of source synchronized with those of sink at 75$\times$10cm and 75$\times$20cm, however the relationship occurred less at 75$\times$30cm.

  • The crops recommended for the plant factory system are diverse. The importance of planting density in the plant factory is being recognized. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal planting density for growth and quality of kohlrabi in a closed-type plant factory system. The kohlrabi was grown under fluorescent lamps and nutrient film technique system. The growth and quality of kohlrabi were investigated under four different planting densities ($22plants/m^2(15{\times}30cm)$, $27plants/m^2(15{\times}25cm)$, and $33plants/m^2(15{\times}20cm)$). There were no significant interactions between Shoot fresh and dry weights per plant or bulb stem fresh and dry weights per plant and planting density. Shoot fresh and dry weight per area or bulb stem fresh and dry weight per area were the highest at $33plants/m^2$. There were no significant interactions between plant height, leaf area, photosynthetic rate, hardness, and chlorophyll content and planting density. Significant differences in Bulb stem height and diameter, and brix were observed. Bulb stem height and diameter and brix of kohlrabi were the highest at $22plants/m^2$. Based on our results, we conclude that the optimal planting density is $33plants/m^2$ for growth of kohlrabi, however, the optimal planting density is $22plants/m^2$ for quality of kohlrabi in a closed-type plant factory system.

  • This study was carried out to discuss the influences of the different fertilizer levels and plant densities on the flowering and balling in cotton in Mokpo Branch Station, Crop Experiment Station in 1991. The cotton flowered 67% before Aug. 25 which is the limit date of picked-cotton harvest, and the ratio of flowering for stalk-cut cotton was 30%. The 1.5 times fertilizer levels and the 70cm row density had more flower buds, flowers and bolls per m$^2$ than any other treatment plot. The crop growing was bad in dense planting due to the nutrient deficiency. The flowering ratio to flower bud was about 70%, and the balling ratio to flower numbers was about 48%. The bolling ratio was lower in the case of more flower number. The shedding ratio of flower buds was about 30% in average and showed increasing tendency by dense planting. It was observed that the higher ratio of bud shedding tended to accompany with shedding the lower ratio of boll shedding.

  • The study was conducted to find out the ways of increasing fresh leaf yield under conditions of the optimum shading net treatment and planting densities of Aster glehni. Although the most effective shading net treatment to acclimatize the plant was 75% shading in 1993, as growing years were prolonged, effects of shading net treatment was not recognized. Ca contents in 75% shading net treatment was much higher than other shading net treatments. Shading effect tend to promote their growth and fresh leaf yield in 1993 even though 75% shading net treatment did not increase fresh leaf yield in 1994 and 1995. Planting density. $30\times20cm$. showed the effectiveness fresh leaf yield for 1994 and 1995 except for 1993.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the optimum planting density for rice pot seedling cultivation in wheat-rice double cropping system in Honam plain area. A mid-late maturing rice variety 'Chinnong' was raised in pot seedling tray and conventional tray for 30 days, and then transplanted on June 25 in 2012 and 2013. Four different planting densities (15.2, 18.9, 21.6, and 25.3 hills per $m^2$) in pot seedlings were applied as treatment. Conventional tray seedling was implicated as control at a single planting density of 27.8 hills per $m^2$. In this experiment, the number of effective tillers was increased as planting density increasing, but stem diameter was decreased. Pot seedling showed higher stem diameter and effective tillers than the control. Heading dates of pot seedling plots were not significantly different between the planting densities but 2 days faster than the control. Culm length, number of panicles, panicle length, and ripening grain ratio were higher in pot seedling compared to the control, but 1000-grain weight showed no significant difference. Milled rice yields in pot seedlings ranged from 5.19 to $5.43\;t\;ha^{-1}$, and the highest yield was observed in 21.6 hills per $m^2$. Head rice ratios in pot seedlings and the controls were not significantly different. Above results on planting density of rice pot seedling cultivation would be applicable to wheat-rice double cropping and also to late transplanting cultivation of rice single cropping.

  • Since 1962, varietal development and dissemination for summer upland crops have been actively initiated by the Crop Experiment Station, Office of Rural Development, Suweon, Korea. The major breeding objectives of soybeans have been to develop varieties which are early maturing, disease resistant, and adaptable to late planting for after-barley cropping. Development of eleven new soybean varieties including Hwangkeumkong, Jangyeobkong, Danyeobkong, and Kwangkyo has greatly increased the soybean yield throughout country. For com, after development of Hwangok #2, a synthetic, in early 1960's, nine corn hybrids-single crosses, double-crosses, and three-way crosses-such as Jecheon-ok, Hoengseong-ok, Kwangok, Suweon #19, etc., have been disseminated mainly to Kangweon province, a major corn producing area in Korea, and drew up the yield over 4 tons per hectare. The major breeding objectives of sweet potato have been to develop varieties which have high starch content and root yield. Hwangmi, Hongmi, and Shinmi are three sweet potato varieties developed and disseminated by the Crop Experiment Station, Office of Rural Development and are grown most widely in Korea. Most of researches on cultural practices of upland crops have begun on a full scale from early 1960's. In soybeans, for example, no fertilizer but for barley was applied although the effects of phosphate and potassium fertilizers were great on soybeans in after-barley soybean croppings. The effects of heavy application of phosphate and calcium fertilizers on soybeans in newly reclaimed soils were recognized. Recently a mixed fertilizer for soybean (N; 40, P:70, K:60 kg/㏊) was developed and sold for soybean growers. The optimum planting densities of 220, 000 plants/ha in full-season cropping and 330, 000 pts/ha in after-barley cropping of soybeans were known from repeated experiments. For higher yield, a means of cultural practices such as transplanting-pinching, direct planting-pinching, and hilling-up, etc., were developed along with barley-stubble planting with no tillage and integrated herbicide application for labour savings. For sweet potato, cultural practices for planting date, harvesting date, fertilizer, and planting density were fully established. For early marketing, a technique of vinyl-mulching on sweet potato has also fully developed. For com, planting density of 37, 000 pts/ha in early 1960's has been changed to 55, 000 pts/ha for grain production and 67, 000 pts/ha for silage. The amounts of fertilizers have also been changed from 120-120-120kg/ha (N-P-K) in early 1960s to 180-150-150 kg/ha. These increases in number of plants per unit area and fertilizer levels have resulted in greater production for both grain and silage. At the same time, the production techniques of F1 seeds have also improved.

  • The influence of planting density, on the mulberry yield, had been studied for 5 years period since 1982. For this purpose, a hilly land (15$^{\circ}$) was selected and 5 planting density level (926, 1,667, 2,780 and 3,444 tree/10a) were used. Following results were obtained. 1. Vinyl mulching promoted 2 days earlier of green tip sprouting stage and 3 days earlier of shallow-bill stage, compared with the non-mulching. 2. It was shown that increase of the length of the branch with vinyl mulching and decrease of the mulching effect with the higher density of plants from, 2,780 tree/10a. 3. When the planting density was higher, length and width of leaf was decreased sharply, and chlorosis of the lower part of the branch was occured heavily. 4. With the higher planting density, number of branches per tree and average length of the branch was decreased. Number of shorter branch-normal branch ratio were increased. However, number of branches and total length of branch per area were shown opposite. 5. Yield of mulberry was increased for the peroid of 3 years after planting with the all the levels of planting density after that, yield increase was dully in 926 tree plot, and more dully in 1,677 trees plot, while decrease of the yield were showen with density of 2,780 and 3,444 trees plots. 6. The highest average yield for the 5 years were obtained from 2,780 trees plot, 46.6% higher than in 926 trees plot, followed 40% higher in 3,444 trees plot, and 29.9% higher in 1,667 trees plot. 7. Soil pH, organic matter, Ca and Mg decreased with cultivation, especially P2O5, pH, Ca and Mg in the density of more than 926 trees plot.

  • Growth habit, intraspecific competition of Digitaria sanguinalis, and interspecific competition between soybean and D. sanguinalis were evaluated to obtain the basic informations on establishing an effective control measure in upland corps. The earlier planting on April 1 produced approximately 3.5 times higher dry matter than that of the latest planting on July 22 and resulted in the earliest heading on July 8 and the latest heading was observed on September 4 planted on July. 22, but the interval between planting and heading dates was shortened progressively as the planting dates were delayed, showing irregularity of heading within a hill. Tiller numbers per plant were inhibited as densities increased from one to forty. One plant planted per pot produced significantly higher tiller numbers than density of 5 to 40 plants per pot. However, total tiller numbers was the highest in density of 40 plants planted per pot. Regardless of planting densities used, D. sanguinalis at all densities produced the similar dry matter per pot, showing severe intraspecific competition as density increased, but on each plant basis dry weight production was the highest in the lowest density such as one plant planted per pot. Competition between soybean and D. sanguinalis for the entire growing season decreased the total dry weight of soybean by 59.6%. Soybean required the maintenance of a weed free condition, about 3 to 4 weeks immediately after seeding, for obtaining the maximum yield, beyond which soybean crops effectively suppressed the growth of D. sanguinalis.

  • Growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) with arch training method were evaluated on several training heights, planting densities, and topping node orders. Cucumber cultivar 'Eunsung-baekdadagi' was planted on 9 June with three training heights of 1.5, 1.8, and 2.1 m, there planting densities of 90${\times}$40, 90${\times}$50, and 90${\times}$60 cm, and five topping node orders of 20th, 30th, 35th, and nontopping. The plot of 2.1 m training height resulted in the higher sun-scald fruit rates due to the higher temperature above 37$^{\circ}C$ in the upper space of plastic house. The plot of 1.8 m arch training height showed higher fruit setting and marketable yield rate compared to the other training heights. The maketable yield rate with 1.8 m height arch training was 102,691 kg ${\cdot}$ $ha^{-1}$, 21% higher value than that of 1.5 m. Powdery mildew incidence increased with the increase of planting density. Lower LAI were shown depending on the higher topping node order. Lower light transmission ratio was shown in the higher planting density plots, might be due to the crowded stems and leaves inside those plots. Fruit setting rate was also higher in main stems rather than in lateral ones. Marketable yie이 in 90${\times}$50 cm planting distance with 35th node topping treatment was 98,311 kg ${\cdot}$ $ha^{-1}$, 5% higher than that 90${\times}$40 cm planting distance with 30th node topping treatment. Thus the 1.8 m of training height, 90${\times}$50 cm of planting distance, and 35th node topping was evaluated for the effective cultivation condition in arch training of cucumber in highland.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate growth and yield characteristics and the contribution to the yield according to the emergent sequence of tiller under two planting density $(60{\times}15\;cm,\;60{\times}25\;cm)$ in Coix lachryma-jobi L. var. mayuen Stapf. The average culm length and number of rachillas of $60{\times}25\;cm$ planting density were 20 cm shorter and 4.7 higher, respectively, whereas seed setting position of $60{\times}25\;cm$ planting density was 1.7 nodes lower compared with $60{\times}15\;cm$ planting density. Culm length and culm diameter of each tiller became shorter and thinner as the tiller emerged later. Length of rachillas was longer, number of grains was higher and ripening rate was also higher in $60{\times}25\;cm$ planting density than those of $60{\times}15\;cm$ planting density, whereas 100 grain weight in $60{\times}25\;cm$ planting density was lower by 0.5 g compared with $60{\times}15\;cm$ planting density. Length of rachillas and number of grains according to the emergent sequence of tiller were shown shorter and lower as the tiller emerged later. The highest number of bract was obtained from the main culm in both planting densities. 100 grain weight according to the emergent sequence of tiller became lower as the tiller emerged later in $60{\times}15\;cm$ planting density, but there was no clear tendency in $60{\times}25\;cm$ planting density. Among 8 tillers, 5th tiller and 4th tiller of main culm contributed 84.4% to the yield in $60{\times}15\;cm$ planting density, while it was 84.1% in $60{\times}25\;cm$ planting density. Analysis of path coefficient to grain yield showed that direct effect was the highest in the number of grain per tiller followed by in the 100 grain weight and in ripening rate.
