  • 1. For the purpose of analyzing the plan of new reclamation project and its evaluation, actual studies for the existing polders are required. 2. The variations of the salt content of soil, yields and staus of its plantation have been studied for six areas reclaimed in relatively recent years, including Kangwha, Daechon, Chopo, Eushin, Kwangyang and Chinkyo. 3. The annual yields from the project were only 52 percent in the first year as compared with kilograms per 10 a. in the Hachirogata polder in Japan. 4. Such a low productivity in the existing polders in Korea is chiefly by the high ground water table, unfavourable conditions of subdrainage in the root zone, and saline damages of existing high salt content. That is because the depth of drainage ditches is too shallow and layout distance between every drainage ditches is also too long. 5. In order to overcom such a uncertiainties, the drainagedistance suitable for these areas has been Calculated by using the Donnans formula. Applying to the formula, drainage facilities are so densie that land use capability may be decreased. 6. For the purpose of ensuring the effective desalinization and high land use capability, feasible interval to establish the culvert has been studied in accordance with both formulas of Donnan and Hoogan. 7. In order to accomplish the early desalinization in both areas of new reclamation or existing polders, the problems of internal drainages should be resolved. for this puprose in addition to the endeavour of the personnels actually engaged in such works. The actual support of the related agencies for financial assitance is required.

  • Miscanthus is one of the promising energy crops for producing bioethanol or bioenergy in many countries. A field of about 180 ha for miscanthus plantation was started for demonstration near Geum River in 2011. Since the size of the field is much larger than those of traditional cultivation for one single crop in this country, questions were raised if there are any environmental impacts from the energy crop plantation, particularly on water quality. In this study, water quality of runoff water from three different plots was analyzed for assessing the impacts of energy crop production. The results showed that there were no substantial differences among the plots; control, the first, and the second year growth fields. The concentrations of COD, T-N, and T-P were lower than those in runoff water from agricultural crop fields. The second year field showed a slight higher values of COD and T-N concentrations due to the biodegradation of residue of miscanthus which was not cultivated for observation. Commercial planation of miscanthus in a large scale would not result in a water quality problem when avoiding application of fertilizer as practiced in agricultural crop fields.

  • We examined the effects of fertilization [control (C), 200 kg N ha^{-1} + 25 kg P ha^{-1}$ (LNP), and 400 kg N $ha^{-1} + 50 kg P ha^{-1}$ (HNP)] on fine root (< 2 mm diameter) dynamics using monthly soil coring method in a 39-year-old Pinus rigida plantation of central Korea. The average fine root biomass (live + dead) (kg $ha^{-1}$ $\pm$ SE) during the first growing season for C, LNP, and HNP was 1301 $\pm$ 54, 1084 $\pm$ 47, and 1328 $\pm$ 22, respectively. The fine root production (kg $ha^{-1}$ $\pm$ SE) was 2394 $\pm$ 128 for C, 2048 $\pm$ 101 for LNP, and 2768 $\pm$ 150 for HNP, respectively. Over the same period, fertilization treatments had impact on N and P concentrations of live fine root. Nitrogen and P inputs (kg $ha^{-1}$ $yr^{-1}$) into the soil through fine root turnover for C, LNP, and HNP were 16.6 and 0.9, 17.2 and 0.9, and 24.1 and 1.6, respectively. There were no significant differences in fine root biomass and production during the first growing season after fertilization. However, fertilization increased fine root N and P concentrations, and in consequence resulted in increased N and P inputs into soil through fine root turnover.

  • The number of species and forest area has decreased as urbanization is progressed. The landscape degradation was examined by analyzing vegetation map, satellite image and characteristics of actual vegetation. The study was conducted in Mt. Baekja and its surroundings located on Gyeongsan city, southeastern Korea. As the result of landscape analysis, agricultural field was a characteristic attribute of the study area. Lowlands of this study area were occupied by agricultural field and various plantations. For 15 years from 1987 to 2002, forest area decreased from 2,072.9 ha to 1,853.2 ha, and shape index and fractal dimension of vegetation patches increased from 1.32 to 1.65 and from 1.05 to 1.09, respectively. Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucco. community showed the highest species diversity, whereas Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carriere community showed the lowest species abundance. As forest management implications, monitoring of endangered plant species (Jeffersonia dubia (Maxim.) Benth. & Hook.f. ex Baker & S.Moore), and restoration of lowland forest from plantation to natural forest were discussed. Further, establishment of greenways utilizing existing streams, roadside, and public facilities were recommended.

  • For landscape ecological management of the isolated forestlands in Incheon city located in the western tip of South Korea, the forest vegetation of Mt. Cheolma was classified phytosciologically and mapped out its spatial distribution at a scale of 1:5,000. Characteristics of forest landscape structures were discussed in terms of the number and size of patches obtained by analy zing vegetation map. Units to manage the forest vegetation were categorized into eighteen communities, seventeen groups, and sixteen subgroups. Landscape elements were classified into five types: secondary vegetation, introduced vegetation for forestry (IVF), introduced vegetation for agriculture (IVA), and other elements. Two hundred and ninety-three forest landscape patches covers 443.3ha, of which IVF accounted for 316.8ha(71.5$\%$), the largest portion, secondary vegetation for 101.2ha(22.8$\%$), IVA for 6.2ha(1.4$\%$), and others for 19.1ha(4.3$\%$). The ratio of natural forest elements of 31.9$\%$ showed that this area was mainly comprised of artificially introduced vegetation, such as Robinia pseudoacacia plantation and Pinus rigida plantation. Forest landscape patches have a mean area of 4.5ha, a density of 66.1/100ha, and a diversity index of 0.87. It was estimated that differentiation of patches recognized in community level would be related to human interference and those in subordinate level to natural processes.

  • This study was undertaken to compare the biomass of Abies koreana growing at two sites. A $10{\times}10m$ plot was established in each site of a natural stand in Mt. Jiri and a plantation in Gyeongsan nursery. Five trees of A. koreana were randomly selected in each site. The following traits were investigated from each tree : height, basal diameter, age, weight of stem, branches, and needles as above-ground traits and weight of total roots, horizontal roots, and vertical roots as below-ground traits. In Gyeongsan nursery, age of sample trees was negatively correlated with both height and weight of total stem, while height was highly correlated with weight of horizontal roots. There was high correlation between the basal diameter and weight of total stem, and between the basal diameter and weight of roots. In Mt. Jiri stand, most of the above-ground traits except age were significantly correlated with the below-ground traits. The linear regression equation between the cross section area of base (X) and the weight of total stem (Y) in Gyeongsan nursery was Y=12.66X-12.92, and correlation was significant ($R^2=0.89$). The linear regression equation between the cross section area of base(X) and the weight of total branches (Y) in Mt. Jiri stand was Y=25.51X+6.00, and correlation was highly significant ($R^2=1.0$).
