Plasma technology has been widely used for decontamination, differentiation, and disease treatment. Recently, studies show that plasma has effects on increasing seed germination and plant growth. In spite of increasing number of studies about plasma effects, the interaction between plasma and plants has been rarely informed. In this study, we have analyzed the effects of nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma on seed germination and growth of coriander (Coriandum sativum), a medicinal plant. We used to Ar, air, and N2 plasma on seed as feeding gases. Plasma was discharged at 0.62 kV, 200 mA, 9.2 W. Seed germination was increased over time when treated with N2 based DBD plasma for exposure times of 30 seconds and 1 minute, everyday. After 7 days, about 80~100% of seeds were germinated in the treatment with N2 based DBD plasma, compared to control (about 40%, only gas treated seeds). In order to elucidate the mechanism of increased germination, we have analyzed characteristics of changes in plant hormones and seed surface structure by SEM.
The present investigation dealt with observation and experiments concerning the growth and differentiation of hop plant, using the varieties of Cascade(C), Shinshuwase(Sh), and Hallertau(H). The results were as follows: (1) Life cycle of hop plants. The annual growth period of hop plant was devided chiefly into 3 phases, dormant, vegetative and reproductive. (2) Growth of main stem. The hop vine begun to grow in the middle of May and grow vigorousely in the middle and latter of June, then gradually decline or stops at the middle of July and the early of August. (3) Growth of lateral vines. By the statistical analysis, it is judged that the varieties of H and Sh were more grown than that of C. H and Sh were not significant, but H and Sh from C were significant in 5% level. (4) Fresh weight and water content of hop cone. Hop cone in fresh weight of C variety was higher than those of other two varieties and water content of hop cone was decreased with time elapse in three races together. (5) Growing point. Histological view of hop varities in each was different. C showed form of sweet potato, H showed form of round, and Sh showed form of ellipse. (6) Shape of the leaf. C and H were 3 lobes, but Sh is 3∼5 lobes. Generally, the color is dark green. (7) Hop cones. Hop cones are as follows.

E. intermedium 60-2G possessing a strong ability to solubilize insoluble phosphate, has plant growth-promoting activity, induced systemic resistance activity against scab pathogen in cucumber, and antifungal activity against various phytopathogenic fungi. The phosphate solubilizing activity of 60-2G may be mainly accomplished by production of gluconic acid through a direct extracellular oxidation of glucose by glucose dehydrogenase that required a PQQ cofactor for its activation. A pqq gene cluster conferred Phosphate-solubilizing activity in E. coli DH5${\alpha}$ was cloned and sequenced. The 6,783 bP pqq sequence had six open reading frames (from A to F) and showed 50-95% homology to pqq genes from other bacteria. The E. coli strain expressing the pqq genes solubilized phosphate from hydroxyapatite after a pH drop to 4.0, which paralleled in time the secretion of gluconic acid. To study the role of PQQ in biocontrol traits of E. intermedium, PQQ mutants of 60-2G were constructed by marker exchangee mutagenesis. The PQQ mutants of E. intermedium were lost activities of solubilizing phosphate, growth inhibition of phytopathogenic fungi, and plant growth promotion. These findings suggest that PQQ plays an important role, possibly activation of certain enzymes, in several beneficial bacterial traits of E. intermedium by as yet an unknown mechanism.

Ninety isolates of Colletotrichum species from new persimmon tree twigs and 50 isolates from pepper plant fruits were isolated via single-spore isolation. Of the 140 isolates, 26 were examined for mycelial growth, carbendazim sensitivity, and ITS sequence. Four of the isolates from the persimmon trees, which were cultivated exclusively in an orchard, showed fast mycelial growth and sensitivity to carbendazim, while five of the pepper isolates showed slower mycelial growth and were resistant to the fungicide. However, 17 isolates from persimmon trees cultivated with pepper plants in the same orchard showed slow mycelial growth like the pepper isolates and they were sensitive to carbendazim like the persimmon isolates. ITS sequence analysis of these 27 isolates led to the identification of the 22 persimmon isolates as C. gloeosporioides and the five pepper isolates as C. acutatum. PCR with species-specific primers confirmed that the 90 isolates from persimmon were C. gloeosporioides whereas the 50 isolates from pepper were C. acutatum. The 90 persimmon isolates of C. gloeosporioides and 50 pepper isolates of C. acutatum were compared by a wound inoculation test to determine their capacity for host cross-infection. All of the C. acutatum isolates from pepper caused typical symptoms of anthracnose on the fruits of pepper plants and twigs of persimmon; they differed from the C. gloeosporioides isolates from persimmon, more than 90% of which were able to infect only persimmon. Amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis revealed the existence of two groups (C. gloeosporioides and C. acutatum isolates group). At 80% genetic similarity, the C. gloeosporioides group was defined within four clusters, while the C. acutatum group was within three clusters. However, these clusterings were unrelated with the virulence of Colletotrichum species against pepper fruits.

In this study, strain KNU17Pc1 was tested for its antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani AG-1(IA), which causes banded leaf and sheath blight (BLSB) of maize. KNU17Pc1 was tested further for its broad-spectrum antifungal activity and in vitro plant growth promoting (PGP) traits. In addition, the in vivo effects of KNU17Pc1 on reduction of BLSB severity and seedling growth promotion of two maize cultivars under greenhouse conditions were investigated. On the basis of multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA), KNU17Pc1 was confirmed as P. chlororaphis subsp. aurantiaca. The study revealed that KNU17Pc1 had strong in vitro antifungal activity and was effective toward all in vitro PGP traits except phosphate solubilization. In this study, for the first time, a strain of P. chlororaphis against Colletotrichum dematium, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. melonis, Fusarium subglutinans and Stemphylium lycopersici has been reported. Further biochemical studies showed that KNU17Pc1 was able to produce both types of phenazine derivatives, PCA and 2-OH-PCA. In addition, solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS) analysis identified 13 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the TSB culture of KNU17Pc1, 1-undecene being the most abundant volatile. Moreover, for the first time, Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxan (D4), dimethyl disulfide, 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene and 1-undecene were detected in P. chlororaphis. Furthermore, this study reported for the first time the effectiveness of P. chlororaphis to control BLSB of maize. Hence, further studies are necessary to test the effectiveness of KNU17Pc1 under different environmental conditions so that it can be exploited further for biocontrol and plant growth promotion.
Chinese cabbage is one of the most important vegetables in Korea and a target crop for market stabilization as well. Remote sensing has long been used as a tool to extract plant growth, cultivated area and yield information for many crops, but little research has been conducted on Chinese cabbage. This study refers to the derivation of simple Chinese cabbage growth prediction equation by using RapidEye derived vegetation index. Daesan-myeon area in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea is one of main producing district of Chinese cabbage. RapidEye multi-spectral imagery was taken on the Daesan-myeon five times from early September to late October during the Chinese cabbage growing season. Meanwhile, field reflectance spectra and five plant growth parameters, including plant height (P.H.), plant diameter (P.D.), leaf height (L.H.), leaf length (L.L.) and leaf number (L.N.), were measured for about 20 plants (ten plants per plot) for each ground survey. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for each of the 20 plants was measured using an active plant growth sensor (Crop $Circle^{TM}$) at the same time. The results of correlation analysis between the vegetation indices and Chinese cabbage growth data showed that NDVI was the most suited for monitoring the L.H. (r=0.958~0.978), L.L. (r=0.950~0.971), P.H. (r=0.887~0.982), P.D. (r=0.855~0.932) and L.N. (r=0.718~0.968). Retrieval equations were developed for estimating Chinese cabbage growth parameters using NDVI. These results obtained using the NDVI is effective provided a basis for establishing retrieval algorithm for the biophysical properties of Chinese cabbage. These results will also be useful in determining the RapidEye multi-spectral imagery necessary to estimate parameters of Chinese cabbage.
We isolated nine endophytic fungi from the roots of salt-stressed soybean cultivar Daewonkong and screened them for growth-promoting secondary metabolites. Of all fungal isolates, P-4-3 induced maximum growth promotion of waito-c rice and soybean. Analysis of the culture filtrate of P-4-3 showed the presence of physiologically active gibberellins $GA_1$, $GA_3$, $GA_4$, and $GA_7$, along with physiologically inactive $GA_{15}$ and $GA_{24}$. The plant growth promotion and gibberellin-producing capacity of P-4-3 was much higher than wild-type Gibberella fujikuroi, which was taken as the control during the present study. The fungal isolate P-4-3 was identified as a new strain of Scolecobasidium tshawytschae through the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of 18S rDNA sequence. Gibberellins production and plant growth promoting ability of genus Scolecobasidium was reported for the first time in the present study.
Rhizobacterial strain isolated from barren soil, Bacillus subtilis RFO41 exhibits a high level of phosphate solubilizing activity and produces some phytohormones. Its promoting effect on the growth of Xanthium italicum Moore, a wild plant growing at lakeside barren land and thus a good candidate plant for revegetation of barren lakeside was evaluated in the in situ test for 19 weeks at Lake Paro, Kangwon-do. Strain RFO41 could enhance the dry weight of X. italicum by 67.7%. It also increased the shoot length of X. italicum plant by 21.1% compared to that of uninoculated control. Both growth enhancements had statistical significance. However, the inoculation did not show any effect on the root growth, which might be due to the breakage of tiny root. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis showed that the inoculated bacteria were maintained in the soils, and the indigenous bacterial community did not exhibit any significant change. This plant growth promoting capability may be utilized as an environment-friendly and low cost revegetation method, especially for the sensitive areas such as barren lakeside lands.

Growth and development of a plant over a growing season is closely related to the daily accumulation of heat. Heat unit measured by accumulated growing degree days (GDD) is becoming increasingly popular to estimate the growth of a plant or even in insect. GDD or heat accumulation per day is measured by calculating average daily temperature and then subtracting the base temperature below which growth does not occur. Heat accumulation per day is added for the desired period and accumulated GDD is determined. The present study was conducted in five seasons in an established garden with K-2, S-36 and V-1 mulberry varieties belonging to Morus indica L. grown under completely irrigated condition at the farm of CSRTI, Mysore during 2001 - 2002. Plants were pruned in each season and the growth of the plant measured by total shoot length and fresh leaf yield was recorded at an interval of 5 days starting from 30 days of pruning (DAP) to 70 days when all the plants were pruned. The accumulated GDD for the corresponding days were recorded and used for analysis. Accumulated growing degree days (GDD) have been found to be perfectly correlated with both growth and yield in all the seasons in all the varieties studied. The high $R^2$ values indicated a strong relationship between the accumulated GDD and, growth and yield of mulberry.
