A Study on Determining Chemical Compositions of Schizandra chinensis (오미자 성분에 관한 연구)

  • The results from the determination of contents of chemical components in Schizandra chinensis are as follows. The contents of malic acid and citric acid in Schizandra chinensis was 38,691 and 3,330 ppm/100g dry weight. The contents of total phenolic compounds in Schizandra chinensis was 1.560%. The predominat phenolic acids were cinnamic acid, gentisic acid, coumalic acid, chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid. Contents of crude lipids in Schizandra chinensis. was 160.5mg/g. Most of fatty acids in lipids were oleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid which are unsaturated fatty acids, and palmitic acid which is saturated fatty acid. In case of essential oils, the predominat components in Schizandra chinensis were caryophyllene, calarene, cubebene, acoradiene and ${\beta}$-himachalene

Fumigant Toxicity and the Repellent Effect of Essential Oils against Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (어리쌀바구미에 대한 식물정유의 훈증독성과 기피효과)

  • Stored grain insects appear frequently as grains are harvested, stored, and distributed on the market. Producers mostly depend on chemical fumigants to control and repel insect pests, but this application of chemicals may cause side effects for humans and the environment. Safer control approaches, including the use of natural products are required, and in this study, we assessed the control effect of essential oils on stored grain insects. The essential oils of 8 plant species from 6 families were tested for their fumigant toxicity and repellent effects using a Y-tube Olfactometer against Sitophilus zeamais adults. Pennyroyal and tea tree oil respectively exhibited 97% and 63% mortality at $10{\mu}{\ell}L^{-1}$ air concentration in tested fumigant toxicity. Of particular note, pennyroyal oil ($LT_{50}$, hour=3.87) showed higher adulticidal activities than tea tree oil ($LT_{50}$, hour=4.09). When assessing repellent effects, using a Y-tube Olfactometer at $10{\mu}{\ell}$/filter paper concentration, the cedarwood, cinnamon, cypress, patchouli and pennyroyal essential oils showed potent repellent activities against Sitophilus zeamais adults. Cinnamon, cypress and pennyroyal essential oils showed notably high repellent activities of 82.4%, 80.0% and 86.7%, respectively, at $1{\mu}{\ell}$/filter paper concentration.

  • Bungkang (Syzygium polyanthum) is a medium to tall plant which produces medicinal root-bark, the plant is normally found along inland river bank and produces small white flowers and fruits. Essential oils are among the most interesting components of the plant extracts consisting mostly of monoterpenoid or sesquiterpenoids. They are used as therapeutic agents in ethno, conventional, and complementary alternative medicines. Investigation and evaluation of the essential oil of Syzygium polyanthum as well as the antibacterial, antioxidant and antifungal activity was ascertained. The experiment was performed. 100 chemical constituents were obtained and two pure compound was isolated as Eugenol (1) and Farnesol (2). Significant growth inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus, (ATCCⓒ25923) Klebsiellia pneumonia (ATCCⓒ19155), Salmonella typhi (ATCCⓒ14028) and Escherichia coli (ATCC©25922) and the fungal strains Aspergillus flavin, Aspergillus niger, Candida, tropicalis, and Fusarium oxysporium was observed from the essential oil at concentration of 500 ㎍/mL. Antioxidant potential was observed to be strong of 18.42 ㎍/mL when compared to the control of 15.23 ㎍/mL. The result indicated that the oil obtained from root-bark of Syzygium polyanthum can be considered as an agent for antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal in pharmaceutical food and cosmetic industries trails.

Comparative Chemical Composition of Domestic and Imported Chrysanthemum indicum L. Flower Oils

  • Volatile flavor compounds were isolated from the flowers of Chrysanthemum indicum L. (gamguk) produced in Korea and China by the hydro distillation, and were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The yield of oils from Korean and Chinese gamguk were 2.0 and 0.5%(v/w), respectively. Sixty-three volatile compounds of Korean gamguk representing 89.28% of the total peak area were tentatively identified, including 35 hydrocarbons, 12 alcohols, 6 ketones, 3 esters, 5 aldehydes, 1 oxide, and 1 miscellaneous component. Thirty-six volatile components of Chinese gamguk constituted 58.15% of the total volatile composition were tentatively characterized, consisting of 19 hydrocarbons, 7 alcohols, 2 ketones, 2 esters, 4 aldehydes, 1 oxide, and 1 miscellaneous component. The predominant components of Korean oil were ${\alpha}$-pinene, 1,8-cineol, and chrysanthenone. Whereas, camphor, ${\alpha}$-curcumene, and ${\beta}$-sesquiphellandrene were the main aroma compounds of Chinese gamguk.

Comparison of Volatile Aroma Components from Saussurea lappa C.B. Clarke Root Oils

  • The volatile flavor components were isolated from the roots of Saussurea lappa C.B. Clarke produced in Korea and China by the hydro distillation, and were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). 63 aroma compounds representing 87.47% of the total peak area were tentatively identified, including 13 alcohols (22.56%), 26 hydrocarbons (21.78%), 4 aldehydes (21.24%), 11 ketones (18.04%), 1 oxide (0.52%), 3 esters (0.16%), 1 carboxylic acid (0.02%) and 4 miscellaneous components (3.15%). 46 volatile flavor components of imported S. lappa C.B. Clarke constituted 65.69% of the total volatile composition were tentatively characterized, consisting of 1 aldehyde (23.32%), 24 hydrocarbons (16.69%), 10 ketones (15.84%), 7 alcohols (8.92%), 1 oxide (0.83%), 2 esters (0.07%) and 1 acid (0.02%). The predominant components of both essential oils were (7Z,10Z,13Z)-7,10,13-hexadecatrienal and dehydrocostuslactone.

Variation of the Essential oil and Main Component from Different Origin of Levisticulum officinale Koch

  • The essential oils were isolated by hydrodistillation and their composition determined capillary GC method with standards. The essential oil content showed significant differences between the two populations on the vegetative organs. The essential oil level of the leaves and roots was considerably higher in the Korean population at full flowering and waxy ripening stage but essential oil content of the roots was significantly higher in the Hungarian taxon at leaf rosette stage. We observed the essential oil accumulation tendency was mianly dependent on plant organs and intra-specific taxon during the vegeation period. Butylidene-phthalide was proved to be the main component of the oil in both population roots (50.9-73.3%), while dimethyl-acetate was showed as a major compound on the over-ground parts (56.7-62.0%). The qualitative composition of the essential oil in the reproductive organs concerning the identified compounds was the same as the vegetative parts with the main component ${\alpha}-phellandrene$ (4.8-28.1%) and butylidene-phtalide (9.7-16.1%), The quantitative composition showed some changes during the ontogenesis phases. Most characteristic ones are the decreasing proportion of dimethyl-acetate (from 7.3% to 1.1%) and the appearance of ${\alpha}-pinene$ (from 0.5% to 1.5%) only after fruit setting in both population.

Biological Activities of the Essential Oil from Angelica acutiloba

  • Angelica acutiloba is one of the most intensively cultivated medicinal plants in Korea. The roots of this plant have been used as an important herbal drug, especially for the treatment of various female disorders, as the traditional therapy in Korea and other Asian countries. Consumption of its fresh leaves as a healthy vegetable has recently increased. In this study, essential oil fractions were extracted from the roots and leaves of this plant by steam distillation. Compositions of the two oils were compared by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antibacterial activities of the essential oil were determined against three strains of Escherichia coli. DPPH radical scavenging and reducing power tests were performed to evaluateits antioxidant activities. The cytotoxic activities of the essential oil against a human breast and a uterine cancer cell line were estimated by MTT tests. Additionally, the morphological changes after treatment of the oil fraction were observed under a microscope. The essential oil fraction and its main components, Z-ligustilide and butylidene phthalide, inhibited the growth of three E. coli strains examined, with minimum inhibiting concentrations (MICs) ranging from 1.0 mg/ml to 8.0 mg/ml. Additionally, the essential oil fraction of A. acutiloba exhibited significant DPPH free radical scavenging activity and reducing power. Significant cytotoxic activities of the A. acutiloba essential oil were observed for human uterine (Hela) and breast (MCF-7) cancer cell lines.

Suppression of melon powdery mildew and tomato leaf mold disease by the antifungal activity of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil

  • Essential oils (EOs) have been shown to be plant-extracted antimicrobial agents. However, there are limited studies investigating the efficacy of EOs against pathogens. Among them, tea tree oil (TTO) is extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia, which is also used as an antifungal agent. In this study, the effect of TTO was investigated on the suppression of melon powdery mildew caused by Podosphaera xanthii and tomato leaf mold disease caused by Passalora fulva. Both powdery mildew and leaf mold diseases were significantly suppressed by a spray of TTO. Eighty percent of powdery mildew and 81% of leaf mold disease of the control value were suppressed by 0.5% TTO liquid, when sprayed 3 times every 7 days on the melon and tomato leaves. Inhibition of mycelial growth was also greatly affected by different concentrations of TTO against four different fungal pathogens. Ninety-eight percent of Pseudocercospora fuligena, 97% of P. fulva, 95% of Botrytis cinerea, and 94% of Phytophthora infestans mycelial growth were inhibited by 0.2% to 1.0% of TTO contained in plate media, respectively. However, phytotoxicity in plants by the TTO treatments was revealed when melon and tomato leaves were sprayed with a 1% and 2% concentration of TTO, respectively. Therefore, our findings show that TTO has high antifungal effects against various plant pathogens that occur during crop cultivation. We also suggest that when applying TTO to plant leaves, it is necessary to establish an accurate treatment concentration for different crops.

Colorado Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) Control Potential of Essential Oil Isolated from Iranian Cymbopogon citratus Stapf

  • Colorado potato beetle is a most destructive insect pest of potato throughout the world. Although utilization of chemical insecticides is a main method for management of this pest, their negative side-effects such as threat to humans and the environmental pollution prompted researchers to search for natural alternatives. Recently plant essential oils with low or without side-effects against noun-targeted organisms and with high availability were considered as safe bio-pesticides. In the present study, toxicity of essential oil of Iranian lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus Stapf, was evaluated against 3th instar larvae and adults of Colorado potato beetle by a leaf dipping method. Results displayed essential oil had notable toxicity against both larvae and adults after 24 and 48 h exposure times. Probit analysis revealed $LC_{50}$ values (lethal concentration to kill 50% of population) with 95% confidence limits were 10.32 (9.17 - 11.72) and 7.76 (6.80 - 8.74) ${\mu}l/ml$ for larvae and 6.27 (4.82 - 8.15) and 4.35 (3.24 - 5.62) ${\mu}l/ml$ for adults after 24 and 48 h, respectively. Based on regression analysis, a positive correlation between log concentration of essential oil and insect mortality was achieved. Results indicated C. citratus essential oil can be candidate as a natural alternative to the harmful chemical insecticides in the management of Colorado potato beetle.
