A Study on a Trend of Human Error Types Observed in a Simulated Computerized Nuclear Power Plant Control Room

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate a trend of human error types observed in a series of verification and validation experiments for an Advanced Control Room(ACR) equipped with Lager Display Panel(LDP), Work Station Flat Panel Display(WS FPD), list type Alarm System(AS), Soft Control(SC) and Computerized Procedure System(CPS). Background: Operator behaviors in a fully computerized control room are quite different from those in a traditional hard-wired control room. Operators in an ACR all together monitor plant status and variables through their own interface system such as LDP and WS FPD, are notified of abnormal plant status through their own list type AS, control the plant through their own SC, and follow the structured procedure through their own CPS whereas operators in a traditional control room only separately do their duty directed by their supervisor. Especially the secondary task such as manipulating the user interface of ACR can be an extra burden to all the operators including the supervisor. Method: The Reason's human error classification method was applied to operators' behavioral data collected from a series of verification and validation experiments where operators showed their plant operational behaviors under a couple of harsh scenarios using the ACR simulator. Results: As operators accustomed to the new ACR system, knowledge or rule based mistakes appearing frequently in the early series of experiments decreased drastically in the latest stage of the series. Slip and lapse types of errors were observed throughout the series of experiments. Conclusion: Education and training can be one of the most important factors for the operators accustomed to the traditional control room to be adapted to the new system and to run the ACR successfully. Application: The results of this study implied that knowledge or rule based mistakes can be reduced by training and education but that lapse type errors might be reduced only through innovative improvement in human-system interface design or teamwork culture design including a new leadership style suitable for ACR.

  • 이 논문은 국내 원자력 발전소에서 급수펌프 구동용 소형 터빈의 아날로그 제어시스템을 디지털 방식으로 교체한 후 발전소를 기동하기 전에 최초 제어 파라미터를 설정하는 방법에 대하여 기술하고 있다. 기존 제어시스템의 제어상수가 알려져 있는 경우에는 초기 제어상수를 쉽게 결정할 수 있으나 보통은 아날로그 시스템의 제어상수를 파악할 수 없는 경우가 많으며 이 때 초기 제어상수와 최적 제어상수는 크게 차이가 날 수도 있다. 이런 경우에는 발전소 자체의 기동이 위험한 경우도 발생할 수 있다. 매우 간단한 실험이지만 제어기술자가 플랜트를 기동하기 위해서 매우 유용한 방법과 실제로 이를 적용한 사례에 대하여 기술한다.

  • Recently, tidal power generation has gained much attention. South Korea's tidal power generation systems were imported from abroad by turnkey type and have being operated. Therefore, for efficient operation and technological independence of a tidal power system, development of core technology is required. This paper deals with the start stop control system of water turbine generator in the tidal power plant, as one of our development project results. Using the SCADA system, the status and operations of water turbine generator in the tidal power plant, as well as simulation for calculation of maximum power were carried out. A small model type of start stop control device was also developed. In addition, the control system in Sihwa tidal power plant was modeled, and the results obtained by the dynamic simulation were given in graphics by 2D simulator.

  • 본 논문은 MRAC방식을 이용하여 비행체 조종장치의 제어기 설께에 관하여 다루었다. 적응제어 시스템의 구성은 NARENDRA와 VALAVANI가 제안한 구조를 토대로 하여 프랜트의 상대차수가 $n^{*}=2$인 경우에 대하여 고찰하였다. 비행체 조종장치는 단일 입.출력을 갖는 제어시스템으로 근사화하였고, 제어입력은 기준모델과 프랜트의 입.출력관계로부터 얻는다. 설계된 제어시스템의 타당성을 검토하기 위하여 프랜트가 애널로그 모델인 경우롸 비행자세를 나타내줄 수 있는 비행운동테이블을 포함하는 각각의 경우에 대하여 시뮬레이션하였고, 그 결과 검토하였다.

  • There are generator/turbine/boiler control system in the thermal power plant. By the way, the manufacturers are different each other in many cases. Therefore there were many difficulties in interface and maintenance of power plant. So, we have been developing the integration of all control system in a single manufacturer. Mill & burner control is analyzed in this paper.

  • An supercritical once through boiler system has been used in the korea standard-type thermal power plant. It is critical in boiler operation that superheater temperature should be controlled within the specified limit. In this paper, control logic scheme is suggested for superheater temperature in once through boiler. Finally the simulation result using process model based simulator shows the validity of suggested control logic.

  • The improvement of load following operation of the thermal power plant is influenced to the electrical quality. Analysis of boiler, turbine, and governor system, and the study of control algorithm are preceded. The thermal power plant is operated by various control systems. In the case of faulty governor system, it takes long days to solve the problem and impossible to repair the mechanism without outage. A non-planned out-age is taken into consideration because of economical power production. In this paper, to clear the continuous swings of an old turbine governor system(YEOSU #1), the trend, the control logic, and the hydraulic mechanism are analyzed, and then the control circuit with ADAPT function and the 1st order lag circuit are inserted and modified. After that, the power plant comes to automatic governor control operation.

  • Since the heat exchange system, such as the boiler of power plant, gas turbine, and radiator require a high rate heat efficiency and the efficiency of these systems is depended on the control methods. However, it is important f3r operator to understand control system of these systems. In order to properly apply control equipment to these process control systems, such as boiler, any other heat process, or process control system it is necessary to understand the basic aspects and operation principle of the process that relate control, interrelationships of the process characteristics, and the dynamics that are involved. Generally, PID controllers are used in these systems but it is difficult for engineer to understand the complex dynamics and the tuning method because of the coupling action and disturbance in the system loop. In this paper, we design an effective experimental system fur automatic control education and analyze its characteristics through experimental system and industrial plant control software to study how they can team automatic control system by experiments.

Stability Evaluation for Estimated Impulse Response with a Feedforward Adaptive Control System

  • This paper describes a new method of stability evaluation for an estimated impulse response of a plant. It is difficult for the conventional stability evaluation equation to be used in an adaptive feedforward control system which uses an immeasurable acoustic transfer system of a real plant, because the equation requires an exact true impulse response of the plant. Therefore, the usefulness of the conventional equation is limited in a computer simulation. The proposed method is applicable to not only a computer simulation but also a real feedforward adaptive control system. It is found that the system is stable when the value of misadjustment is below -10 dB through computer simulations and experiments. And also, it is proved that the error signal is stable through the verification using filtered reference and filtered error LMS methods.

  • The importance of plant factory which blend agriculture and manufacture has been discussed widely. This company has researched hydroponics technique for cultivation which has been mainly developed in the sites of Okinawa and Hyougo Prefecture. In 1987, we stopped the previous research there, and started a new one far plant factory at the Agricultural Research Center of Chiba Prefecture. In 1989, we built four experimental plant factories (120㎡) at Chiba Oil Factory Refinery in Ichihara-city, developing techniques of cultivation, equipment production and environmental control for cultivation system of tomato, strawberry and leaf vegetables.
