  • This paper aims to give an overview of the methods to inherently prevent human errors and to effectively mitigate the consequences of such errors by securing defense-in-depth during plant management through the advanced man-machine interface system (MMIS). It is needless to stress the significance of human error reduction during an accident in nuclear power plants (NPPs). Unexpected shutdowns caused by human errors not only threaten nuclear safety but also make public acceptance of nuclear power extremely lower. We have to recognize there must be the possibility of human errors occurring since humans are not essentially perfect particularly under stressful conditions. However, we have the opportunity to improve such a situation through advanced information and communication technologies on the basis of lessons learned from our experiences. As important lessons, authors explained key issues associated with automation, man-machine interface, operator support systems, and procedures. Upon this investigation, we outlined the concept and technical factors to develop advanced automation, operation and maintenance support systems, and computer-based procedures using wired/wireless technology. It should be noted that the ultimate responsibility of nuclear safety obviously belongs to humans not to machines. Therefore, safety culture including education and training, which is a kind of organizational factor, should be emphasized as well. In regard to safety culture for human error reduction, several issues that we are facing these days were described. We expect the ideas of the advanced MMIS proposed in this paper to lead in the future direction of related researches and finally supplement the safety of NPPs.

  • Steam generator is one of the major components of nuclear power plant and steam generator tubes are the pressure boundary between primary and secondary side, which makes them critical for nuclear safety. As the operating time of nuclear power plant increases, not only damage mechanisms but also scaled deposits on steam generator tubes are known to be problematic causing tube support flow hole blockage and heat fouling. The ability to assess the extent and location of scaled deposits on tubes became essential for management and maintenance of steam generator and eddy current bobbin data can be utilized to measure thickness of scale on tubes. In this paper, tube reference standards with various thickness of scaled deposit has been set up to provide information about the overall deposit condition of steam generator tubes, providing essential tool for steam generator management and maintenance to predict and prevent future damages. Also, methodology to automatically measure scale thickness on tubes has been developed and applied to field data to estimate overall scale amount.

  • A solar power plant is a facility that produces electricity. As the risk of fire and electric shock accidents is diversified, the risk of workers, surrounding people, and facilities is increased, preventing safety accidents and promptly responding to safety accidents Is emerging. In light of the necessity of such development, it is necessary to develop a solar power generation management system that can diagnose and maintain the problems of the power generation system in real time by developing technologies for collecting and analyzing the data produced by the solar power generation system As a result, the utilization rate and the maintenance cost can be reduced. In order to do this, it is necessary to accurately predict the solar power generation amount in the present state, to diagnose the abnormality of the current power generation state and to grasp the abnormal position, and to use the model considering economical efficiency when the abnormal position is grasped, And the time and other information should be provided.

  • The turbine rotor, one of the main facilities in a power plant, it generates electricity while rotating at 3600 RPM. Because it rotates at high speed, it requires careful management because high vibration occurs even if it is deformed by only 0.1mm. However, bending occurs due to various causes during turbine operating. If turbine rotor bending occurs, the power plant must be stopped and repaired. In the past, straightening was carried out using a heating torch and furnace in the field. In case of straightening in this way, it is impossible to proceed systematically, so damage to the turbine rotor may occur and take long period for maintenance. Long maintenance period causes excessive cost, so it is necessary to straighten the rotor by minimizing damage to the rotor in a short period of time. To solve this problem, we developed a turbine rotor straightening equipment using high-frequency induction heating equipment. A straightening was validated for 500MW HIP rotor, and the optimal parameters for straightening were selected. In addition, based on the experimental results, finite element analysis was performed to build a database. Using the database, a straightening amount prediction model available for rotor straightening was developed. Using the developed straightening equipment and straightening prediction model, it is possible to straightening the rotor with minimized damage to the rotor in a short period of time.

  • The nuclear power plant(NPP)'s Instrumentation and Control(I&C) system periodically conducts integrity checks for the maintenance of self-diagnostic function during normal operation. Additionally, it performs functionality and performance checks during planned preventive maintenance periods. However, there is a need for technological development to diagnose failures and prevent accidents in advance. In this paper, we studied methods for estimating the reliability function by utilizing environmental data and self-diagnostic data of the I&C equipment. To obtain failure data, we assumed probability distributions for component features of the I&C equipment and generated virtual failure data. Using this failure data, we estimated the reliability function using representative artificial intelligence(AI) models used in survival analysis(DeepSurve, DeepHit). And we also estimated the reliability function through the Cox regression model of the traditional semi-parametric method. We confirmed the feasibility through the residual lifetime calculations based on environmental and diagnostic data.

  • Diffuse pollution management in Korea initiated by the Ministry of Environment (MOE) resulted to the construction of pilot facilities termed Best Management Practices (BMPs). Twelve BMPs installed for the diffuse pollution management in the Kyung-An Stream were monitored since 2006. Data on the mass loading, removal efficiency, maintenance activities, etc. were gathered and utilized to conduct the evaluation of long-term performance of BMPs. The financial data such as actual construction, design and maintenance cost were also collected to evaluate the lifecycle cost (LCC) of BMPs. In this study, most of the maintenance activity was focused in the aesthetic maintenance that resulted to the annual maintenance cost of the four BMP types was closely similar ranging from 8,483 $/yr for retention pond to 8,888 $/yr infiltration system. The highest LCC were observed in constructed wetland ($418,324) while vegetated system had the lowest LCC ($210,418). LCC of BMPs was not so high as compared with the conventional treatment facility and sewage treatment plant. On the other hand, the relationship of removal efficiency on unit cost for TSS and TN was significant. This study will be used to design the cost effective BMP for diffuse pollution management and become models for LCC analysis.

  • The main purpose of this thesis is to select the appropriate plants for the ecological restoration of coastal land. The soil and vegetation environment survey of the beach where the halophytes live now was executed for the sake. Firstly, the soil survey was done by the physical and chemical survey of beach soil and dumped soil. The soil is mostly sandy loam and sandy clay loam which has silty much. The beach soil where the salt plants live has more organic matters in the content than dumped soil because of the influx of the dead halophytes, a pioneer plant to this area. Secondly the vegetation survey was executed by the halophytes survey in the beach area in order to select the appropriate plants for ecological restoration. The shows two different areas in the vegetation divided by the salt density of soil. Artemisia fukudo, Juncus haenkei, Carex pumila, Silene armeia, Polyponum aviculare etc live in the less salt density area and it doesnt show collected. Salicornia herbacea, Suaeda asparagoides, Aster tripolium, Limonium tetragonum, Suaeda maritima, Scirus fluvitilis, Phragmtes communis, Suaeda japonica, Zoysia sinica etc halophytes live in the more salt density area and there are a few advent plant but many collected. So the salt density of soil limits the vegetation. The selection of appropriate plants for the ecological restoration programs was designed with 3 different standards considering the salt density of soil in the dumped soil area. The plan selection guidelines of thick salt density due to the salt density of soil, and economical efficiency and maintenance because the area is large. The guidelines of middle salt density area were made considering economical efficiency and maintenance because there are salt as well, and it is effective for the scenery if they have normal ecology but their leaves have good color and the flowers are beautiful. However I suggest beautiful flowery plants for the neutral plan area because this area is the entry point of the airport so the view is very important.
