  • Rust diseases were found on safflower (Carthamus thinctorius) fields located in Euisong-gun Gyengbuk province in Korea. The infection rate of the disease in surveyed area was about 15% in 2001. The typical symptoms of the disease appeared first as small white spots on the leaf and turn brownish, dark brown spores revealed on them. Uredospores were light brown in color, ellipsoid or spherical in shape and 21~23 ${\times}$ 21~25${\mu}m$ in size. Teliospores were chestnut-brown in color, ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and 35~40 ${\times}$ 27~33${\mu}m$ in size. Pedicels were non-color of limpidness in color and 15~30${\mu}m$ in size. The causal fungus was identified as Puccinia carthami, based on morphological charateristics. This is first report on the rust of safflower caused by Puccinia carthami in Korea.

  • An unreported disease of garlic was observed in commercial fields in Jiangsu province, China. The symptoms started as water soaked lesions at the base of the leaves. Later, water-soaked areas developed on stems and spread to the internal tissues, followed by yellowing and necrosis along leaf edges and soft rot of the stems. The causal organism isolated from symptomatic plants was identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens based on its biochemical and physiological characteristics and confirmed by the cellular fatty acid composition and Biolog data as well as 168 rRNA gene sequence analysis. The bacterial isolates caused similar symptoms when inoculated onto garlic plants. In addition, leek and shallot were susceptible to the P. fluorescens pathogen. However, the P. fluorescens pathogen failed to cause any symptoms when it was inoculated onto 15 other plants. This is the first report of a bacterial disease of garlic caused by P. fluorescens in China.

  • A disease forecast model for Marssonina blotch of apple was developed based on field observations on airborne spore catches, weather conditions, and disease incidence in 2013 and 2015. The model consisted of the airborne spore model (ASM) and the daily infection rate model (IRM). It was found that more than 80% of airborne spore catches for the experiment period was made during the spore liberation period (SLP), which is the period of days of a rain event plus the following 2 days. Of 13 rain-related weather variables, number of rainy days with rainfall ≥ 0.5 mm per day (Lday), maximum hourly rainfall (Pmax) and average daily maximum wind speed (Wavg) during a rain event were most appropriate in describing variations in airborne spore catches during SLP (Si) in 2013. The ASM, Ŝi = 30.280+5.860×Lday×Pmax-2.123×Lday×Pmax×Wavg was statistically significant and capable of predicting the amount of airborne spore catches during SLP in 2015. Assuming that airborne conidia liberated during SLP cause leaf infections resulting in symptom appearance after 21 days of incubation period, there was highly significant correlation between the estimated amount of airborne spore catches (Ŝi) and the daily infection rate (Ri). The IRM, ${\hat{R}}_i$ = 0.039+0.041×Ŝi, was statistically significant but was not able to predict the daily infection rate in 2015. No weather variables showed statistical significance in explaining variations of the daily infection rate in 2013.

  • Red spots symptoms were observed on the leaves of Rumex japonicus Houtt. in Goesan, Korea, in May 2019. Diseased leaf showing red spot and white-colored sori were found behind of diseased leaves. Aeciospores were confirmed and observed using a stereomicroscope, light microscope, and scanning electron microscope. They were globose or ovoid and measured 19.0-24.4×19.0-24.5 ㎛, with verrucae ornamentation. For the phylogenetic analysis, partial of large subunit rDNA region and cytochrome c oxidase subunit III were sequenced. As a result, the isolated fungus species showed high similarities with Puccinia prizeliana. Based on the previous report, morphological characters, phylogenetic analysis, it was confirmed as Puccinia phragmitis which have not been reported in Korea, and we firstly report this fungal agent on R. japonicus as P. phragmitis in Korea.

  • A stem and leaf rot disease of English ivy(Hedera helix) was found in the flower market, Jeonju, Chonbuk province, Korea in July 2007. A Phytophthora species was isolated from the diseased part of the plant. Based on the mycological properties and pathogenesis the isolate was identified as Phytophthora nicotianae. The fungus produce ovoid sporangium which was ovoid to spherical which is noncaducous, papillate and averaged $35.4{\times}25.2{\mu}m$ in dimension. Chlamydospores were abundantly produced on agar media and sized about 28.5 ${\mu}m$ in diameter. The fungus was heterothallic and A1 mating type. Oospores were measured 23.3 ${\mu}m$ in size. Optimum temperature for growth of the fungus was 25 to $30^{\circ}C$. Up to our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating the stem rot on English ivy caused by P. nicotianae in Korea.

  • Leaf spot symptoms were observed in a commercial Palenopsis cultivated fields. Circular-elliptical watersoaked spots surrounded by a light green or yellow halo and turned to black when it was severe infection or blacken with gathered symptoms. These spots were finally enlarged to form of larger areas. Under the favorable conditions of temperature and moisture, the infection extended rapidly and dispersed to the crown and sometimes the infected plant became dead. A bacterial organism, isolated from the advancing margins of the lesions, was tested to characterize causing bacterium based on pathogenicity. The biochemical and physiological tests of that bacterium identified that as an Acidovorax avenae subsp. cattleyae. Therefore, we suggested to call that the new Phalaenopsis disease was bacterial brown spot caused by A.avenae subsp. cattleyae in Korea.

  • The influence of rice bacterial leaf blight (BLB) disease incidence on yield and quality of Nampyung, Gang-baek and Iksan493 was investigated in three areas, Gimje, Yeongam and Jangheung, frequently found BLB infested rice. The infection rate of Nampyung, susceptible to BLB disease, was higher ($23{\sim}93%$) than Gang-baek ($2{\sim}15%$) and Iksan493 ($2{\sim}6%$), have resistant gene Xa7 and xa5, respectively. BLB disease incidence was severely found in Gimj and then yield of Nampyung was reduced 65% (352 kg/10a) compared to Iksan493 (540 kg/10a) due to the decrease in the ripen grain filling, brown/rough ratio and 1,000 grain weight. There was no difference of rice yield among Nampyung, Gangbaek and Iksan493 in Yeongam and Jangheung. The occurrence time of disease in Yeongam and Jangheung was later than Gimje and BLB disease was less infected in these areas. BLB infected rice grain showed inferior grain appearance and taste index to sound grain. independent of rice with resistant gene. In Yeongam and Jangheung, Gangbaek and Iksan493 cultivated showed lower ratio of white color to belly than Nampyung. Iksan493 showed better grain appearance and lower ratio of white core to belly than Gangbaek. In protein content of rice grain, the range of Gangbaek and Iksan493 was $6.9{\sim}9.8%$, but Nampyung showed unstable ranged from undetermined to 9.0%.
