  • Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is known to produce the highest total digestible mutrients (TDN) yield among summer grain legumes in Jeju area but little is known about the effects of cultural practices on forage yield and quality. A determinate soybean cv. Baegunkong was planted on 5 June, 20 June, and 3 July and grown at four plant densities (30, 50, 70 and 90 plants $m^{-2}$ in 1998 in Jeju to evaluate the effects of planting date and plant density on the yield and quality of soybean forage. Days to flowering decreased from 47 to 38 days, average plant height from 61 to 51cm and main stem diameter from 6.31 to 5.00mm as planting was delayed from 5 June to 3 July. Average plant height quadratically increased from 45 to 62cm as plant density increased from 30 to 90 plants $m^{-2}$. Planting date did not affect the average dry matter, crude protein, and TDN yields. The average dry matter and TDN yields displayed a quadratic response to plant density and the optimum plant density for both dry matter and TDN yields was estimated about 60 plants $m^{-2}$. Plant density had no effect on crude protein yield. Planting date did not significantly influence forage quality. The crude protein content was not significantly influenced by plant density. Increasing plant density slightly increased acid detergent fiber content but slightly decreased TDN content.

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of extension of grazing duration in late autumn on grass growth in following spring, in order to improve the rate of self-sufficiency for roughage feed. Plant height, total biomass and litter production of herbage were increased when the grazing was finished early in late autumn. The proportions of clover and litter, and amounts of animal intake were decreased, with extended grazing duration in late autumn. But when the grazing was finished late in autumn, the contents of crude protein (CP, %) of herbage were increased, contents of acid detergent fiber (ADF, %), neutral detergent fiber (NDF, %) and crude ash (%) were decreased in pasture after grazing, therefore the contents of total digestible nutrients (TDN, %) and relative feed value (RFV) of herbage were improved. The early end grazing showed that plant height, total biomass and litter production of herbage in following spring were higher than those in late end grazing. However, increased yields were not significantly different among end grazing treatments (0.12-0.15 tonha), except for the final end grazing in late autumn (0.01 tonha). With extended grazing duration in late autumn, the contents of CP of herbage in following spring were increased, contents of ADF, were decreased, and RFV were improved. • This experiment were conducted to investigate heterosis and combining ability for several mutant characters by analyzing dialled crosses of flue-cured tobacco. In a dialled cross of 3 flue-cured varieties and the mutant line 83H -5, the heterosis was somewhat higher in Fl than in F2. For growth character, the heterosis was 0.28-6.03% in plant height, leaf number, leaf shape index and yield, and was 43.2% for bacterial wilt disease index. The mutant line 83H-5 showed significantly negative GCA effect for plant height, leaf width and bacterial wilt disease index in Fl and F2, leaf length in F2, and positive GCA effect for total alkaloids, total nitrogen in Fl and days to flower in F2, respectively. Specific combining ability(SCA) in 83H-5 x Hicks was significant in negative effect for leaf length(F2), number of leaves(F2), leaf shape(F1, F2), bacterial wilt(F2) and alkaloids(F1), and in 83H-5 x NC 2326 in positive effect for leaf length(F1, F2) and leaf width(F2), and for 83H-5 x NC 82 in positive effect for plant height(F1, F2) and leaf width(F2), and for 83H-5 x NC 82 in Positive effect for Plant height(F1, F2), leaf length(F2) and yield(F1, F2).

  • Ranunculus asiaticus characterizes colorful and attractive flower shapes that are related with the ornamental value of bulbous plants. Improving ornamental value of bulbous flowers has been the general goal of floricultural market. Gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) and benzyladenine (BA) play an important role in growth and developmental processes in floriculture. Combinational treatments of these two hormones have been used in floriculture to improve flower quality. We assessed the effects of combined $GA_3$ and BA, as well as the individual effects of each hormone, on growth characteristics using soil drench application to eight R. asiaticus cultivars, 'Giallo Millepetali', 'Bianco Millepetali', 'Arancio Millepetali', 'Rosa SC', 'Arancio Pratolino', 'Giallo Pratolino', 'Bianco Pratolino', and 'Rosa Ch Pratolino'. $GA_3$ treatments increased plant height and first flower size of R. asiaticus cultivars. Moreover, about 5 to 9 days to flowering were averagely shortened by $GA_3$ treatments compared to controls. On the other hand, the opposites, including first flower size and days to flowering, were observed for cultivars treated with BA, compared with controls. Treatments of $GA_3$ + BA generally affected growth traits, such as plant height, flower size, and the timing of flowering on some R. asiaticus cultivars. In particular, about 5 to 6 days to flowering were reduced on average by Treatments of $GA_3$ + BA. Our results showed positive growth effects, including plant height, days to flowering, first flower height, number of flowers from the application of individual and combined hormones to R. asiaticus cultivars and demonstrate a role for these hormones in future bulbous floriculture.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of single and co-inoculation of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) on early plant growth in Saemangeum reclaimed soil. Plant growth promoting Brevibacterium iodinum RS16 and Methylobacterium oryzae CBMB20 were inoculated on maize (Zea mays L.) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor L.) grown in Saemangeum reclaimed soil. Single and co-inoculation of B. iodinum RS16 and M. oryzae CBMB20 increased plant height, dry biomass accumulation and macro-nutrient accumulation of maize and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. M. oryzae CBMB20 treatment increased plant height in maize by 41.2% at 30 days after sowing (DAS), shoot dry weight and total dry weight compared to non-inoculated treatment. Macro-nutrient accumulation (N and P) in maize roots was significantly increased with co-inoculation treatment, K and Ca content was significantly increased at B. iodinum RS16 treatment compared to non-inoculated treatment. Macro-nutrient accumulation (P, K, Ca and Mg) in shoot was higher with M. oryzae CBMB20 treatment compared to non-inoculated treatment. In case of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, co-inoculation treatment showed 33.7% increase in plant height compared to non-inoculated treatment at 30 DAS. M. oryzae CBMB20 treatment increased root dry weight and total dry weight, macro-nutrient accumulation in roots and N, Ca and Mg accumulation in shoot compared to non-inoculated treatment. P and K accumulation in shoot was significantly increased at co-inoculation treatment compared to non-inoculated treatment. This pot culture experiment demonstrated that single and co-inoculation of B. iodinum RS16 and M. oryzae CBMB20 increased the early growth and nutrient accumulation of maize and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid.

  • Streptomyces spp. were isolated from rhizosphere in fallow lands. The Streptomyces spp. were identified as Streptomyces griseus (MSS181), Streptomyces griseoaurantiacus (MSS269), Streptomyces microflavus (MSS275), Streptomyces herbaricolor (MSS276) based on 16S rRNA gene sequences. Afterwards, cucumber, pepper, tobacco and tomato were drenched with the isolates at early growth stages and plant growth such as height and dry weight of plants was measured. By treatment of Streptomyce spp., plant height of cucumber was increased by 16-29% compared to the control, But there were no statistically significant differences in dry weight. When the same isolates were treated on chili-pepper, plant height and dry weight of chili-pepper were increased respectively by 10-19% and 19-25% compared to the control. The dry weight of tobacco and tomato were increased by 44-73% and 65-165%, respectively compared to the control. When antifungal activities of the isolates were tested against plant pathogenic fungi, Streptomyces microflavus (MSS275) effectively inhibited the mycelial growth of Phytophthora capsici, Fusarium oxysporum, Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum.

  • This Study was conducted to estimate the degree of dominance and gene frequency of some sueful characters in tobacco. The eight parents and a set of 28 crosses of F'1s was F'2s were used as materials, and planted on oriental's and burley cultivated system as randomized block designs, respectively. The observed characters were six agronomic characters which were plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width, days to flowering and yield, and the data obtained from the experiment were analyzed from methods by Hayman's and Jinks. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In Vr-Wr graphical analysis, number of leaves per plant, leaf length, days to flowering and yield were found to be inherited in partial dominance, and plant height was over dominance to be similar to complete dominance, but leaf width was inherited with partial dominance close to complete dominance. 2. In the gene frequency, two varieties Xanthi-Basma and KA 102, for days to flowering and yield had larger number of dominant genes as those were situated near the point of origen. 3. Additive effects of genes(D) were greater than dominance effects of Genes(H) for six agronomic characters except plant height, and mean degree of dominance over all loci was lower than 1 for days to flowering yield, leaf length and number of leaves per plant.

  • Korean local corn lines from various regions in the country were studied for the plant characters such as flowering days. plant height. growth rate. number of ears per plant. leaf size. brace roots and tillers. All the lines without exception were different in plant characters studied and the difference were also apparent among regions from where the original lines were obtained. The variation among lines and original regions indicated that the plant characters were quite dependent upon the magnitude of traditional cultural practices and other environmental factors such as precipitation or cropping systems in regions concerned.
