  • Plant life cycle consists of design, construction, certification, operation, and maintenance phases, and various and enormous plant life cycle data is involved in each phase. Plant life cycle data should be linked with each other based on its proper relationships, so that plant operators can access necessary plant data during their regular operations and maintenance works. Currently, the relationships of plant life cycle data may not be defined explicitly, or they are scattered over several plant information systems. This paper proposes high level design of a plant life cycle data management system based on pre-defined plant life cycle database design. ISO-15926 standard is adapted for the database design. User-interface designs of the plant life cycle data management system are explained based on analysis of plant owners' requirements. A conceptual design of the database is also described with the entity-relationship diagram.

  • Flora investigations in Korea have been conducted by many researchers for diverse purposes. Accumulated flora investigation data has not been utilized efficiently because there is no accessible database for comparison. To overcome this shortcoming, we constructed web-based database of flora investigation, named as the Integrated Korean Flora Database (IKFD; http://www.floradb.net/intro.php). Until now, 284 flora references (263 papers, 14 reports and books, and 7 unpublished papers written in between 1962 and 2017) were digitalized into the database. From 134,711 records, 4,301 species belonging to 228 families and 1,079 genera were identified via mapping with two major Korean plant species lists. Polygon areas originated from references were used for distribution of plant species, identifying precise distribution area. It will be a better index to show plant ecological characteristics. Collected micro-climate data provided by Korea Meteorology Administration were also integrated in IFKD for understanding correlation between distribution of plants and micro-climate. Cold hardiness zone which has been utilized for classifying climate zones. 12 out of 26 zones identified based on micro-climate data in Korea were mapped with distribution of plants. More than half species were appeared in zone 6a, 6b, 7a, and 7b. Taken together with these results, IKFD will be a fundamental platform for understanding plants in Korea flora investigation as well as a new standard for classifying distribution of plants. Moreover, Biodiversity Observation Database (BODB; http://www.biodiversitydb.info/intro.php) which integrates plant distribution data was also integrated for further studies.

  • A nuclear Power Plant is composed of a number of mechanical components. Maintaining the integrity of these components is one of the most critical issues in nuclear industry. In order to evaluate the integrity of these mechanical components, a lot of data are required including inspection data, geometrical data, material properties, etc. Therefore, an effective database system is essential to manage the integrity of nuclear power plant. For this purpose, an internet based virtual reality environment and web database system was proposed. The developed virtual reality environment provides realistic geometrical configurations of mechanical components using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). The virtual reality environment was linked with the web database, which can manage the required data for the integrity evaluation. The proposed system is able to share the information regarding the integrity evaluation through internet, and thus, will be suitable for an integrated system for the maintenance of mechanical components.

  • Flora investigations have been conducted by many researchers for a long time in Korea. Even though large amount of investigation data has been accumulated, there is no accurate statistics or database because most of data were published in a printed form. We developed a web-based database of flora investigation, named as the Integrated Korean Flora Database (http://www.floradb.net/) to understand distribution patterns and habitats of plants in Korea. Till now, 480 published paper, 356 thesis, 76 reports and books, and 8 unpublished papers written in between 1962 and 2017 were collected and their species lists from 280 papers were parsed into the database. From 124,105 records, 3,100 species belonging to 206 families and 965 genera were identified via comparing with two major Korean plant species lists. 55 endangered species, 159 endemic species, and 367 rare species were identified. The most frequently surveyed species were Commelina communis in herbaceous and Rosa multiflora in woody plants. Microclimate data provided by Korea Meteorological Administration were also integrated and analyzed to assign cold hardness zones for each species. By comparing minimum temperature (<2%) acquired from automated weather stations (AWS) near by plant species, 6a to 10b zones (7b is the most frequent zone) were identified. Integrated Korean Flora Database will be a fundamental platform of korea flora investigation as well as a new standard for classifying distribution of plants based on accurate microclimate data. Moreover, it can also provide evidences of investigated plant species, such as specimen and/or pictures with connecting to the InfoBoss Cyber Herbarium (http://herbarium.infoboss. co.kr/) and Biodiversity Observation Datbase (BODB; http://www.biodiversitydb.org/).

  • Korea national arboretum has worked with the plant taxonomic society of Korea to make the first fully electronic floristic checklist in Korea. The result is an ever-expanding online plant name index containing scientifically authorative, up-to-date information on the approximately 7,000 taxa including cultivars. With 37 contributing taxonomists, KPNI is the largest collaborative research projects ever assembled in Korea. A comprehensive database model for the taxonomic data from literature and other sources is presented, which was devised for the Korea National Plant Index database project (KPNI). Gwangreung database model is based on an approach using entity-relationsip diagram. It encompasses taxa of all ranks, nothotaxa and hybrid formulae, cultivars, full synonymy, basionyms, Korean name, and other nomenclatural information. Ths paper presents an analysis of KPNI work processes and an overview how we are approaching the construction of Gwangreung databaese model. It can help the system engineers of other biological information systems to develop their database based on the accurate and integrative taxonomic database.

  • The component reliability database is required in PSA (Probabilistic Safety Analysis) for NPP (Nuclear Power Plant). We have applied a generic database to the PSA for the Korean NPPs, since there is no specific component reliability database. Therefore we are developing the plant-specific component reliability database for domestic NPPs. We also extend the experience and knowledge of PSA and component reliability database for NPP to chemical industry We collect the raw data like component operation history and maintenance history and then input the required data for the component reliability database through failure analysis. With the database, we can not only perform PSA with real data but also perform maintenance optimization.

  • Many applications such as nuclear power plant monitoring, plant process control, stock market management, and network data management require a database system supporting both temporal data model and active rule processing. There have been some efforts to extend the temporal functionalities of the active database system, but an active database system based on temporal database, especially the one applied to the real application is rare. In this paper, we proposed an active temporal rule model based on bi-temporal database. And a rule language following the proposed rule model was described with its execution semantics. Then, how to apply to the nuclear power plant monitoring system was given as the examples.

  • Due to the decreasing domestic construction market since 2007, Korean construction companies are expanding overseas market. As a result, the international market share by Korea has been continuously increased and achieved 65.2 billion dollars in 2013. Despite of such visible results, profitability concerns are constantly arising. It is pointed out that the low-priced bid competition between Korean construction companies and various unpredictable risks are the most crucial factors which aggravate the profitability in the overseas projects. From this point of view, predicting the risks in advance and controling them could be the most important tasks to improve the profitability. This research proposed 202 risk factors with a hierarchy and relational database schema for power plant construction, which is based on the 24 risk classifications in previous research (Kim & Jung 2013). Proposed risk classification and relational database schema could be utilized as the basic data in risk management system.

  • A number of illustrated floras are generally used when we want to idenufy a name of a certain tree. This method, however, has not been efficient because it has taken a great deal of time and effort for persons who do not have much knowledge on the group of the plant. In contrast to this method, the use of taxonomical keys is very efficient for finding out the group of a certain plant. But this method Is very dirtficult for non-specialists to understand the taxonomical ternunology and thus has not been of general use. In thins context, this study was conducted to present the efficient way of the group of a certain tree through the computer database by using the brief forms of plant organs. The database consists of effect fields such as form of trunk and evergreen or deciduous, types of leaf and leaf arrangement, existence of price and hair on twig, form of leaf margin, leaf form and venation, existence of hair on leaf surface and petiole, length of leaf and petiole. The 222 species of tree used for landscape architecture were sorted by items of the eight fields. As a result, the 222 species were divided into 185 groups and the one group contains 7species, 2 groups contain 3 species, 27 groups contain 2 species and 155 groups contain only one species. Therefore it is suggested that the use of computer database and illustrated floras is very easy and efficient in identifying a tree.
