  • The swing noise of an excavator is reduced in this study. When an excavator is under a swing motion, it produces the annoying noise which is required to be reduced. To identify the characteristics of the swing noise, the signals of noise and vibration from an excavator are measured during the swing motion. From the variation of the driving motor speed, the noise and vibration signals are picked up and plotted in the waterfall plots. From the waterfall plots, we identify the frequency components corresponding to the driving motor frequency, the gear mesh frequency of the planetary gear, and their harmonics. In addition, the natural frequencies and modes of the center frame are extracted by using the experimental modal test. It is found that the swing noise is amplified when the gear mesh frequencies coincide with the natural frequencies of the center frame. To reduce the swing noise, the structural modification is performed to the center frame. Finally, it is observed that the noise is considerably reduced by the structural modification.

  • Today, we face many problems at the planetary, national, local, and personal level. What is interesting and important is the fact that the environmental crisis that we have been facing since the 1960s is seen by many environmentalists as a crisis of Western civilization, a slow collective suicide, and "the defining challenge of our age." This fact has encouraged many environmentalists, thinkers, and activists to turn to the wisdom of the East for a better and deeper understanding of nature and humanity for a sustainable future. Moreover, environmental, social, and economic threats are aimed at everyone without discrimination, be they Christian, Jew, Muslim, or Buddhist. Therefore, the very nature of the environmental crisis and challenge requires a cooperative, global response. In this context, this study suggests that Eastern societies may re-discover the richness of their own traditions in the light of pressing environmental problems and offer new insights to respond to these problems. This paper will explore the possibility and relevance of Sir Muhammad Iqbal's (1877-1938) ideas for an attitude of reverence and care for nature. It will suggest that his ideas could enlarge and enrich our perspective of ourselves vis $\grave{a}$ vis nature, and raise our "ecological consciousness" and moral responsibility to take action for the environment. It will be argued that Iqbal, as a great and towering son of the Silk Road and a bridge between East and West, is still relevant for us.

  • Houttuynia cordata is used as a raw material of oriental medicine to acquire antioxidant and anti cancer effect and to cure a heart disease. Mechanochemical technology not only reduces the size of the object but also changes the chemical properties of the object. Extraction of functional materials from the Houttuynia cordata after grinding as a pretreatment using the mechanochemical technology was conducted in this study to investigate the effect of grinding on the yields and antioxidant activities of the extract. Houttuynia cordata was ground by the planetary ball mill and the morphology was analyzed by SEM. Yields of functional materials were increased from 6.2 g in the sample without grinding to 7.0, 7.8, 8.8 g after grinding of 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours, respectively. Nitrite scavenging abilities were increased from 57-77% to 69-86% as a result of mechanochemical pretreatment. Also, DPPH scavenging abilities for the methanol extraction were increased from 10.01-40.29% to 11.01-49.29% as a result of mechanochemical grinding.

  • In the case of 4 wheel drive (4-WD) type car, power switching occurs to 4-WD by operating lever or switch that operates power switching device attached in transfer case which can operate motor by electric signal. So if the RPM of motor is high, power switching will not exactly occur and can cause damage to gear in transfer case according to circumstances. So in this study, we applied 2 level of planet gear type motor spindle of motor drive part of a power train. And conducted decelerating to increase torque to switch power safe and accurately. Also, we researched efficiency of gear by designing reduction gear ratio and gear type and by calculating contact stress and bending strength. Based on researched content, we made drive head of power switching device and a reduction module which uses type that uses motor spindle as sun gear and ring gear as cover.

  • There are many types of speed reducer for industrial uses. However the cycloid speed reducer is widely used in manipulators based on excellent performance of low backlash, high reduction ratio and compact size. It is essential to use precision speed reducer for accuracy of position controls on robot systems and electric vehicles. The cycloid speed reducer has a eccentric rotating motion and offset to avoid some problem of assembly, so it has a disadvantage for vibration. In this paper, a multi-body dynamic model is developed for a cycloid speed reducer and the dynamic behaviors of the reducer are investigated. The cycloid speed reducer consists of cycloidal plate gears, housing gear, input shaft, output pin and shaft, and eccentric bearings. Using a CAD program, each component of cycloid reducer is modeled based on the offset and eccentric. Multi-body simulations using Recurdyn and test using a rig tester are performed. As a result, the pin reaction force and the amplitude of housing displacement are increased by the larger offset and smaller eccentric value of cycloid reducer.

  • Using the spectroscopic data secured with the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph attached to a 3-m telescope at the Lick Observatory, we derived the expansion velocities from various line profiles in the 3600 $\AA$ to 10,000 $\AA$ based on the full width at half maximum and double peak of the high dispersion line profiles. The symmetrical shapes of the permitted line profiles indicate that the permitted line zone is symmetrical e.g., a spherical shell or bipolar + torus structures, which might be evidence of relatively recent ejection from the central star. Most other stronger forbidden lines might be coming from a main shell which appears as a bilateral symmetrical morphology, seen in HST and other ground-based telescopic images. The overall expansion velocities of this main shell structure that are responsible for most lines, seem to show the Hubble type expansion, i.e., accelerating shell. The faster expansion velocities of the permitted OII, NII, NIII and perhaps CII lines that do not suit to the Hubble type expansion, imply the existence of a somewhat smaller inner shell inside the outer main shell. We conclude that the nebular shell consists of a swiftly expanding inner shell and an outer normal shell excited by a central star of about 55,000K. The former compact zone appears to be responsible for the permitted C, N, and O lines while the latter extended shell appears to be responsible for H, He, and forbidden lines. We present some evidence that NGC 6833 be a member of the Galactic halo.

  • In this paper, we derived the formula for estimating the power of the electric motors needed to operate the Decanter-type centrifuge. In the derivation of the formula the sludge-removal torque is to be supplied from the formula derived in the first paper. The intricate nature of the transmission mechanism in the planetary gear trains of the sludge-removal power and torque has been clarified in this second paper. In particular we considered two-motor system, where the main motor drives the machine while the differential-speed control motor plays the role of braking in adjusting the differential speed. Sample calculation for the specific design treated in the first paper showed that the selection criterion for the main motor depends on the lower limit of the differential speed; when the lower limit is set low, it should be selected based on the steadily operating power, while it should be selected based on the starting power when the lower limit is set high. The total power required by both the main motor and the differential-speed control motor increases as the differential speed is decreased. It is suggested that the power loss in the differential-speed control motor could be minimized by attaching an electric generator to it.

  • Gear trains are combined with the planetary gear units and helical gear units. It is known that the combination type is decisive to the system performances of the transmissions. In this paper, within the commonly used range of the design requirements for medium and large scaled (1~8 MW) wind turbines, the transmission characteristics of the typical layouts of the gear train are investigated. According to the international standard by ANSI/AGMA/AWEA 6006-A03, the gear boxes are basically designed and compared with respect to the system lifes of 99% reliability, total weight, the power densities, overall diameter/length and the maximum stresses of the gear teeth. With these comparison works, the characteristics of the layouts of gear trains are discussed.

  • The sensitivity of the typhoon track and intensity simulation to physics schemes of the global model are examined for the typhoon Bolaven and Tembin cases by using the Global/Regional Integrated Model System-Global Model Program (GRIMs-GMP) with the physics package version 2.0 of the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems. Microphysics, Cloudiness, and Planetary boundary Layer (PBL) parameterizations are changed and the impact of each scheme change to typhoon simulation is compared with the control simulation and observation. It is found that change of microphysics scheme from WRF Single-Moment 5-class (WSM5) to 1-class (WSM1) affects to the typhoon simulation significantly, showing the intensified typhoon activity and increased precipitation amount, while the effect of the prognostic cloudiness and PBL enhanced mixing scheme is not noticeable. It appears that WSM1 simulates relatively unstable and drier atmospheric structure than WSM5, which is induced by the latent heat change and the associated radiative effect due to not considering ice cloud. And WSM1 results the enhanced typhoon intensity and heavy rainfall simulation. It suggests that the microphysics is important to improve the capability for typhoon simulation of a global model and to increase the predictability of medium range forecast.

  • This paper proposes an object-oriented conceptual information model of mechanical assemblies, named open assembly model (OAM). The proposed assembly model primarily defines hierarchical relationships between parts and subassemblies. Together with the assembly hierarchy. the model also provides a way to represent tolerances, kinematic information, and parametric assembly constraints. Relational information such as mating conditions and degree of freedom between parts and subassemblies is captured via assembly features and relationships thereof. The information model is described using class diagrams of the Unified Modeling Language (UML), and instance diagrams are used to exemplify the proposed information model. The conceptual model presented in this paper is an integrated information model for assembly representation, which could supply necessary information for tolerance analysis and synthesis, kinematic simulation, and assembly simulation. Such a conceptual information model plays an important role for the exchange of information between modeling, analysis and planning systems. Hence, the proposed model could serve as a framework for developing data exchange standards of mechanical assemblies. The proposed model is demonstrated through a case study of a planetary gear assembly.
