  • This paper employs numerical tools to obtain an optimal thermal design of a heat exchanger with plain-fins. This heat exchanger is located at the condensing section of a crevice-type heat pipe. The plain-fins in the heat exchanger are radically mounted to two tubes in the condensing section. To obtain the optimal design parameters, a computational fluid dynamics technique is introduced and applied to different placement configurations in a system module. Owing to its effects on the heat pipe performance, the temperature difference between the tube surfaces and ambient air is investigated in detail. A greater heat dissipation rate occurs when the plain-fin offsets change from 2 to 3 mm. When this temperature difference is ${\Delta}T=70^{\circ}C$, the upper part of the plain-fins undergoes an accumulation of heat. At below $70^{\circ}C$, the dissipation of heat is accepted. A rectangular plain-fin geometry with varying widths and heights does not have a significant impact on the heat dissipation through-out the overall system. In addition, the temperature distributions between different plain-fin pitches show an equal profile even with different fin pitches.

  • Fin-tube heat exchangers are widely used in refrigeration systems. To improve the performance of fin-tube heat exchangers, the shape of plain fin was developed in slit fin and louver fin. These pins have higher heat transfer performance as well as larger pressure drop. Recent studies of a delta winglet vortex generators(DWVG) show less heat transfer capacity than louver fin. However, the DWVG have very small pressure drop. This paper compares the performance for the plain fin and DWVG fin in terms of flow characteristics and heat transfer based on CFD analyses. The DWVG generate vortex and delayed flow separation and leads to a reduction of a wake region behind a tube. The results show that the DWVG produce improved heat transfer and reduced pressure drop compared to a plain fin. This result is opposite to the Reynolds analogy.

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of a plain tube, low fin tube, and Turbo-C enhanced tube for CFC-11, HCFC-123, CFC-12, HFC-l34a are measured and compared against each other. All data are taken at the vapor temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling temperature 3~8$^{\circ}C$. Test results show that HTCs of a low vapor pressure refrigerant, HFC-123, for a plain, low fin, and Turbo-C tubes are 10.5~20.5%, 8.2~12.2%, 16.5~19.2% lower than those of CFC-11, respectively. On the other hand, HTCs of a medium vapor refrigerant, HFC-l34a, for a plain, low fin, and Turbo-C tubes are 20.6~31.8%, 0.0~8.0%, 13.2~20.9% higher than those of CFC-12, respectively. For all refrigerants tested, HTCs of Turbo-C tube are the highest among the three tubes showing almost 8 times increase in HTCs as compared to those of a plain tube. Nusselt's prediction equation for a plain tube yielded 12% deviation for all plain tube data while Realty and Katz's prediction equation for a low fin tube yielded 20% deviation for all low tube data.

  • This work studies for boiling and condensation heat transfer performance of trapezoidally shaped integral-fin tubes having fin densities from 748fpm to 1654fpm. For comparison, tests are made using a plain tube having the same inside and outside diameter as that of the root of fins of finned tubes. Hahne's theoretical model and Webb's theoretical model are used to predict the R-11 boiling heat transfer coefficient and condensing heat transfer coefficient respectively for plain tube and all integral-fin tubes. Experiments are carried out using R-11 as working fluid. This work is limited to film-wise condensation and pool boiling on the outside surface of plain tube and 4 low integral-fin tubes. In case of condensation, the refrigerant condenses at saturation state of 32$^{\circ}C$ on the outside tube surface cooled by coolant and in case of boiling. the refrigerant evaporates at saturation state of 1bar on the outside tube surface. The amount of non-con-densable gases in the test loop is reduced to a negligible value by repeated purging. The actual boiling and condensing processes occur on the outside tube surfaces. Hence the nature of this surface geometry affects the heat transfer performances of condenser and evaporator in refrigerating system. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of integral-fin tube is enhanced by both extended tube surface area and surface tension. The ratio of the condensation heat transfer coefficients of finned to plain tubes is greater than that of surface area of finned to plain tubes, while ratio of the boiling heat transfer coefficient of finned to plain tubes shows reverse result. As a result, low integral-fin tube can be used in condenser more effectively than used in evaporator.

  • The present work was conducted to investigate the air-side thermal-hydraulic performance of the brazing fin-tube heat exchanger. Pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient for a plain and a louvered fin configuration were compared numerically and experimentally. It was found that the heat transfer characteristics for the plain fin were similar to the developing flow in the rectangular channel. The louver fin showed about twice better heat transfer coefficient than the plain fin. Previous empirical correlations presented by Davenport, Sunden and Svantesson, Sahnoun and Webb, Chang and Wang, Achaichia and Cowell, and Kang were compared with the present experimental data.

  • The row-by-row heat transfer characteristics of fin-and-tube heat exchangers were experimentally investigated. Three wavy fin samples having different rows (one, two and three) and one plain fin sample (three row) were tested for $600{\leq}Re_{D}{\leq}4,000$. The heat transfer data were obtained for individual rows, and the corresponding heat transfer coefficients were reduced from the data. Results showed that the heat transfer coefficients were strongly dependent on the tube row. The heat transfer coefficient decreased as the tube row increased. However, the row effect was different depending on the fin shape. For the wavy fin, the row effect significantly decreased as the Reynolds number increased, yielding approximately the same heat transfer coefficients at $Re_{D}{\approx}2,500$. For the plain fin, however, the row effect lasted for the whole Reynolds number range. The increased mixing of bulk flow by wavy channels appears to induce high heat transfer coefficient (accordingly diminishing row effect) at downstream rows. The heat transfer coefficients of individual rows were higher for heat exchangers having larger tube rows.

  • An experimental investigation was made to study the performance characteristics of evaporator having different fin configurations and tube inner grooves. Three different types of fin such as super slitted fin, slitted fin, plain fin, and two types of tube such as inner grooved tube, and bare tube, are tested varying the air velocity, evaporation temperature and superheat of refrigerant. Results show that in the range of air side Reynolds number $3{\times}10^3\;-\;1.5{\times}10^4$ evaporator with super slitted fin and inner grooved tube shows best performance. It is 80% higher in overall heat transfer coefficient and 2.6 times higher in pressure loss compared to that with plain fin inner grooved tube. Friction factor is found to be almost independent of evaporating temperature and degree of superheat, while Colburn j factor varies with evaporating temperature.

  • There are no domestic researches of plate fin heat exchanger in the field of cryogenic such as LNG FPSO liquefaction plant. In this study, condensing heat transfer characteristics of nitrogen according to three kinds of fin type in the plate fin heat exchanger were analyzed through simulation and experiment to secure independent technologies. In the simulation, nitrogen was condensed at 69bar and $-140^{\circ}C$ in serrated and wavy fin of plate-fin heat exchanger. The serrated fin shows the highest value of local heat transfer coefficient, followed by wavy and plain fin. The experimental results were shown errors less than 12% comparing with the simulation results.

  • In this study, pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of plain finned heat exchangers having 5.0 mm diameter (fin collar 5.3 mm) tubes were investigated. Six samples having different fin pitches (1.1 to 1.3 mm) and tube rows (1 and 2 row) were tested. The fin pitch had a negligible effect on j and f factors. Both j and f factors decreased as the number of tube row increased, although the difference was not significant for the f factor. When compared with the j and f factors of the samples having 7.3 mm diameter tubes, the present j and f factors yielded lower values. However, the j/f ratio was larger at low Reynolds numbers. Possible reasoning is provided from the flow pattern consideration. Comparison with existing correlations were made.

  • Heat transfer performance of integral-fin tube which is used in recipro turbo refrigerator or high compact heat exchangers is studied. Eight tubes with trapezoidal shaped integral-fins having fin densities from 748 to 1654 fpm and 10, 30 internal grooves are tested. A plain tube having the same(inner and outer) diameter as the fin tubes is also tested for comparison. Pool boiling heat transfer of R-11 is investigated experimentally and theoretically on single tube arrangement. The refrigerant evaporates at saturation state of 1 bar on the outside tube surface and heat is supplied by not water which circulates inside of the tube. From the result of eight fin tubes and one plain tube tested, a tube having 1299 fpm-30 grooves shows the best performance. A maximum overall heat transfer coefficient of this tube is about 4000 $W/m^{2}K$ at 2.8m/s of water velocity. The maximum heat transfer enhancement (i.e., the ratio of overall heat transfer coefficients of finned to plain tubes)is about 2.1.
