  • A bulge testing system was developed to measure mechanical properties of thin film materials. A bulge pressure test system for pressurizing the bulge window of the film and a micro out-of-plane ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometric) system for measuring deflection of the film were included in the testing system developed. For the out-of-plane ESPI system, whole field speckle fringe pattern, corresponding to the out-of-plane deflection of the bulged film, was 3-dimensionally visualized using 4-bucket phase shifting algorithm and least square phase unwrapping algorithm. The bulge pressure for loading and unloading was controlled at a constant rate. From the pressure-deflection curve measured by this testing system, ain-plane stress-strain curve could be determined. In this study, elastic modulus of an electrolytic copper film 18 ${\mu}m$ was determined. The modulus was calculated from determining the plain-strain biaxial elastic modulus at the respective unloading slopes of the stress-strain curve and for the Poisson's ratio of 0.34.

  • The bond mechanism for reinforcing bars in concrete is equivalent to the normal contact and friction between the inclined ribs and the surrounding concrete. Based on the contact density model for the computation of shear transfer across cracks, an open-slip coupled model was developed for simulating three-dimensional bond behavior for reinforcing bars in concrete. A parameter study was performed and verified by simulating pull-out experiments of extremely different boundary conditions: short bar embedment with a huge concrete cover, extremely long bar embedment with a huge concrete cover, embedded aluminum bar and short bar embedded length with an insufficient concrete cover. The bar strain effect and splitting of the concrete cover on a local bond can be explained by finite element (FE) analysis. The analysis shows that the strain effect results from a large local slip and the splitting effect of a large opening of the interface. Finally, the sensitivity of rebar geometry was also checked by FE analysis and implies that the open-slip coupled model can be extended to the case of plain bar.

  • Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is an innovative new material that, in comparison to conventional concretes, has high compressive strength and excellent ductility properties achieved through the addition of randomly dispersed short fibers to the concrete mix. This study presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behavior of axially loaded UHPC short circular columns wrapped with Carbon-FRP (CFRP), Glass-FRP (GFRP), and Aramid-FRP (AFRP) sheets. Six plain and 36 different types of FRP-wrapped UHPC columns with a diameter of 100 mm and a length of 200 mm were tested under monotonic axial compression. To predict the ultimate strength of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns, a simple confinement model is presented and compared with four selected confinement models from the literature that have been developed for low and normal strength concrete columns. The results show that the FRP sheets can significantly enhance the ultimate strength and strain capacity of the UHPC columns. The average greatest increase in the ultimate strength and strain for the CFRP- and GFRP-wrapped UHPC columns was 48% and 128%, respectively, compared to that of their unconfined counterparts. All the selected confinement models overestimated the ultimate strength of the FRP-wrapped UHPC columns.

  • This paper first presents an experimental study of twelve specimens for their creep performance, including nine concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns and three plain concrete columns, subjected to three levels of sustained axial loads for 1710 days. Then, the creep strain curves are predicted from the existing creep models including the ACI 209 model, the MC 78 model, and the MC 90 model, and further a fitted creep model is obtained by experimental data. Finally, the creep effects of a CFST arch bridge are analyzed to compare the accuracy of the existing creep models. The experimental results show that the creep strains in CFST specimens are far less than in the plain concrete specimens and still increase after two years. The ACI 209 model outperforms the MC 78 model and the MC 90 model when predicting the creep behavior of the CFST specimens. Analysis results indicate that the creep effects in the CFST arch bridge are significant. The deflections and stresses calculated by the ACI 209 model are the closest to the fitted model in the three existing models, demonstrating that the ACI 209 model can be used for creep analysis of CFST arch bridges and can meet the engineering accuracy requirement when lack of experimental data.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a finite element procedure for predicting the compressive strength and ultimate axial strain of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) confined circular concrete columns and to study the effective parameters of confinement efficiency for helping design of CFRP retrofit technology. The behavior of concrete confined with CFRP is studied using the nonlinear finite element method. In this paper, effects of column size, CFRP volumetric ratio and plain concrete strength are studied. The confined concrete nonlinear constitutive relation, concrete failure criterion and stiffness reduction methodology after concrete cracking or crushing are adopted. First, the finite element model is verified by comparing the numerical solutions of confined concrete with experimental results. Then the effects of column size, CFRP volumetric ratio and plain concrete strength on the peak strength and ductility of the confined concrete are considered. The results of parametric study indicate that the normalized column axial strength increases with increasing CFRP volumetric ratio, but without size effect for columns with the same CFRP volumetric ratio. As the same, the increase in column ductility depends on CFRP volumetric ratio but without size effect for columns with the same CFRP volumetric ratio.

  • Static or dynamic elastomeric O-ring seals are installed between joining parts, and play key roles of high pressure-tightening. Sealing performance and structural safety of the O-ring are dependent on groove design, plain diameter, squeeze and applications such as pressure and temperature. In this study, to solve O-ring problem squeezed and highly pressurized under laterally one-sided constrained condition, hyperelastic FE analyses are performed, and FE results are compared with measured ones by computer-aided tomography, deformed shape and extrusion depth of the O-ring. Through the comparisons, FE analysis technique was verified. In order to evaluate design sensitivity, Taguchi method was used to select FE analysis cases. Adjustment parameters are clearance gap, groove comer radius, plain diameter and squeeze. By means of verified FE analysis technique, it has been analysed how the parameters have effects on contact stress fields, internal stress fields, and extrusion depths. Sealing performance has been evaluated based on contact stress fields and contact widths, and structural safety on internal stress and strain, extrusion lengths.

  • The effects of cooling rate and onset time of fatigue test on hot ductility of plain carbon steels containing 0.06$\sim$0.8 wt.% carbon were investigated at various temperatures. The tensile tested specimen after fatigue strain during cooling showed higher hot ductility than the specimen fatigued and tensile-strained after cooling. With a decreasing cooling rate from solutionizing temperature to test temperature, hot ductility was increased in all temperature ranges, typically in the trough region, and the minimum point of ductility moved to a lower temperature. Also, the depth and width of the trough decreased with lowering the cooling rate.

  • In this paper, the progressive damage of an orthogonal grid shell fabricated with plain weave fabric CFRP under bending load was investigated. The orthogonal grids were cured with the bottom composite shell. Progressive damage analysis of an orthogonal grid shell under bending was performed using nonlinear finite element method with Hashin-Rotem failure criterion and Matzenmiller-Lubliner-Taylor(MLT) model. In addition, the three - point bending test for the structure was carried out and the test results were compared with the analysis results. The comparison results of the strain and displacement agreed well. The damage area estimated by the progressive damage analysis were compared with the visual inspection and ultrasonic non-destructive inspection.

  • Under impact or blast loads, concrete behaves with different mechanical properties comparing to the static loading conditions. In other words, with high strain rate, mechanical properties of concrete vary significantly. To evaluate the compressive characteristics of concrete with high strain rate, SHPB(Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar) test is typically used. However, because SHPB test method has been developed for metallic materials, it is necessary to verify the applicability of SHPB for brittle materials such as concrete. Also, there have been little researches on the evaluations of mechanical characteristics of UHPC under high strain rate conditions. This study has been performed to evaluate and analyse the compressive characteristics of plain concrete and UHPC with SHPB test apparatus. Also, to verify the applicability of SHPB test for concrete, direct displacement image analysis with high speed camera was performed for the comparisons with analytical solutions for SHPB test.

  • It has been well known that the fracture mechanics can be applied to large through crack growth. But the growth rate of small surface cracks initiated from a small defect under rotary bending fatigue tests can not be treated as a function of stress intensity factor range. In this paper, to investigate the growth behavior of surface small fatigue cracks in the view-point of both fracture mechanics and strength of materials, the fatigue test has been carried out on two kinds of plain carbon steels with a small surface defect. Applying the concept of the cyclic strain intensity factor range .DELTA. $K_{\epsilon}$/$_{t}$ to the analysis of small surface fatigue crack growth, it is found that the relationship between cyclic strain intensity factor range and crack growth rate shows linear relation on logarithmic coordinates regardless of defect sizes and two kinds of carbon steels.s.s.
