  • This study attempts to examine the process of place-making, to define the role and interrelationship of the subjects and to analyze the placeness of the 'Kim Gwang-seok Road', a representative example of artificial place-making. Through a 10-year urban regeneration project based on the concept of Kim Gwang-seok, the alleyway between Bangcheon Market and the retaining wall of Sincheon-daero has been embedded as a memorial space for Kim Gwang-seok and an cultural art space. However, the existing placeness has weakened as the result of the excessive tourism in the late 2010s, while the characteristics of cultural commercial space has strengthened. This change in place has prompted community disintegration, which has caused the loss of momentum for sustainable development. To overcome these problems, it will be necessary to establish endogenous governance to expand and reproduce existing community capabilities, embedded social capital and place assets in new directions.

  • Purpose: This study aims to explore the ways to improve the security of temporary shelters in case of nuclear power plant accidents. Method: In this study, we mainly rely on the case studies on previous nuclear power plant accidents-Chernobyl, Fukushima, and Three Mile Island (TMI) cases. Result: The current radiation emergency response plans for nuclear power plant accidents center around the evacuation procedure. As a result, the concept of "shelter in place" has been understood as a means of assisting resident evacuation. However, based on the case studies, we find that encouraging shelter in place, rather than simply emphasizing evacuation, would help minimize unnecessary casualties, especially in case of the accidents rated greater than or equal to INES 5. To facilitate better shelter in place, we recommend utilize apartments as temporary shelters and suggest some possible improvements to ensure those apartments could be equipped with technologies for high radiation protection. Conclusion: To ensure better shelter in place, we recommend using apartments as temporary shelters, and we seek to supplement the function of apartments by using shielding, positive pressure, and sealing technologies.

  • Third places are those that offer a space outside of work and home for people to escape the stress associated with the primary spaces of their lives. Through social interactivity these help in acquiring some emotional support provided by a close and intimate attachment. Such social support can turn into social resources for individuals and can lead to forming communities that may become incubators for social capital through regular visits to shared socializing places. This paper focuses on social interaction that takes place through the third place and the communities that are being created as a contributing factor to knowledge management. The study being reported in this paper investigated the role of coffee shops as third places in building communities and social capital in Kuwait. A mixed-method approach was used to conduct the study. These methods included qualitative methods such as extended conversations in the form of semi-structured interviews and quantitative methods of using questionnaires distributed to coffee shop staff and visitors. Results indicated that importance attached to providing facilities by coffee shops reflected that the owners perceived these as third places. The facilities attracted customers to coffee houses where interactions took place that helped to build communities. The pattern of visits by customers showed that mostly they come in groups and have meetings and gatherings that facilitated and encouraged interactions. The communities that are being built in the coffee shops are indicative of these being perceived as third places by owners, customers, and staff. This study shows the potential of coffee shops as a major sector of the food industry promising a valuable contribution in transformation and transition to a knowl- edge-based economy in Kuwait.

  • This study seeks to examine how to understand the meaning and function of archives from the perspective of deconstruction through a discussion of Derrida's 『Archive Fever』. Derrida argues that the archive is not a space of fixed and absolute truth, but a place open to various interpretations. Archive records are composed of countless meanings constantly created by the people who produce the records and the people who read them. As a result, the archive is not simply a place to store past documents, but a place where meanings are produced, destroyed, and interacted with each other. It must be understood as a complex place. Derrida's view of archives reveals a deconstructive perspective on archives that can be understood separately from the discourse of power and memory. Based on Freud's psychoanalysis, Derrida analyzes the process by which meaning is created and destroyed in archives and the unconscious desires that act on it. Through this, we see that archives are not simply passive records of the past, but memories of the present and future. We must acknowledge that it is an active and complex place that is constantly being reorganized.

  • The trend of abstract expressions has become one of the fundamental causes of the problems relating to a sense of place in modern architecture. This trend began in earnest after the era of modernism, caused by the effect of modern dualism. Before analyzing the problems of the modern trend of abstract expressions and sense of place, a fundamental review of the establishment of human environments is necessary. In this context, this study deals with the principles of the establishment of an environment based on the logic of projection between human beings and milieu, through the concept of mediance by Augustin Berque, and based on this, causes of adverse effects on the establishment of environments in modernism were verified. In addition, the last section covers the conceptual supplements required in order for the concept of mediance to become practical, overcoming its limitation of being simply theoretical. Through this analysis on the concept of mediance, it is realized that a genuine sense of place can be achieved only when architecture moves beyond the individual dimension as a simply physical object, and instead plays a role as a socially sustainable community, embracing the people and unique objects therein.

  • These days, mobile embedded systems adopt flash memory capable of XIP feature since they can reduce memory usage, power consumption, and software load time. XIP provides direct access to ROM and flash memory for processors. However, using XIP incurs unnecessary degradation of applications' performance because direct access to ROM and flash memory shows more delay than that to main memory. In this paper, we propose a memory management framework, dynamic XIP, which can resolve the performance degradation of using XIP. Using a constrained RAM cache, dynamic XIP can dynamically change XIP region according to page access pattern to reduce performance degradation in execution time or energy consumption resulting from native XIP problem. The proposed framework consists of a page profiler gathering applications' memory access pattern using PMU and an XIP manager deciding that a page is accessed whether in main memory or in flash memory. The proposed framework is implemented and evaluated in Linux kernel. Our evaluation shows that our framework can reduce execution time at most 25% and energy consumption at most 22% compared with using XIP-only case adopted in general mobile embedded systems. Moreover, the evaluation shows that in execution time and energy consumption, our modified LRU algorithm with code page filters can reduce more than at most 90% and 80% respectively compared with applying just existing LRU algorithm to dynamic XIP.

  • The aim of the research is to focus on the cognitive principles and to achieve human-level intelligence in referring context based browser history and the Windows history. One of the major problems faced by today's computer users is insufficient and single exclusive context based reference of the browser history and the Windows history. Today we search for the browser history and Windows history in different places even though the context is the same. For e.g., When working on a research paper or preparing a business presentation, a user may require to refer many web sites on the internet and various documents on the local computer. The browser can provide only time based history. The windows document history is also time based and limited to list only few documents. Hence, we propose a tool "Cognitive Based Context Aware Reference History Management Tool" which helps to access the exclusive reference of context and time based history in one place. The tool also proposes to store image history with urls and classifies images of a specific topic accessed in different time, bookmarks management and cross browser history management. These features are very useful as we can access all related documents (doc, docx, ppt, pptx, pdf, txt, and html), web pages, images and bookmarks in one place. The tool uses the cognitive principles like classification and association to achieve the purpose.

  • By depicting the transfer of heat and combustion reaction to take place within thin gas layers close to the propellant surface burning in a steady-state fashion, a mathematical equation has been deduced to describe the burning rate of solid propellant as a function of initial grain temperature and chamber pressure. It has been also assumed that chemical reaction could take place in premixing-diffusing zone but were carried out mainly in the reaction-flame zone. All these phenomena taken place in each zone of combustion have been assumed to be steady-state. In the present investigation, the equation, γ=$\kappa$$.$(1/R(T(sub)i+C))(sup)n$.$exp(-E(sub)a/R(T(sub)i+C))(P/z) is being presented and it is compared with experimental data. The proposed model has been tested and evaluated vis-a-vis strand burner data for three different propellants based on CTPB, and it has been found that the deviation of the computed burning rates from the measured rates ranged up to 2%.
