  • In order to maximize dynamic range and to minimize image lag in digital X-ray imaging, diminishing residual parasitic capacitance in photodiode in pixels is critically necessary. These requirements are more specifically requested in dynamic X-ray imaging with high frame rate and low image lag for industrial 2D/3D automated X-ray inspection and medical CT imaging. This study proposes duoPIXTM X-ray imaging sensor for the first time that is composed of reset thin film transistor, readout thin film transistor and photodiode in a pixel. To verify duoPIXTM X-ray imaging sensor, designing duoPIXTM pixel and imaging sensor was executed first then X-ray imaging sensor with 105 ㎛ pixel pitch, 347 mm × 430 mm imaging area and 3300 × 4096 pixels (13.5M pixels) was fabricated and evaluated by using module tester and image viewer specifically for duoPIXTM imaging sensor.

  • We present an algorithm for automatic anatomically adaptive image enhancement of digital chest radiographs. Chest images were exposed using digital radiography system with a 0.143 mm pixel pitch, l4-bit gray levels, and 3121 ${\times}$ 3121 matrix size. A chest radiograph was automatically divided into two classes (lung field and mediastinum) by using a maximum likelihood method. Each pixel in an image was processed using fuzzy domain transformation and enhancement of both the dynamic range and local gray level variations. The lung fields were enhanced appropriately to visualize effectively vascular tissue, the bronchus, and lung tissue, etc as well as pneumothorax and other lung diseases at the same time with the desired mediastinum enhancement. A prototype implementation of the algorithm is undergoing trials in the clinical routine of radiology department of major Korean hospital.

  • In order to make full color cholesteric displays, color filter-less R, G, B sub-pixel structured cholesteric LC cells have been studied. To make R, G, B colors, UV induced pitch variant chiral dopant was added to cholesteric LC mixtures. The concentration of the photo-sensitive chiral dopant was adjusted so that the initial state showed blue color and the color was changed from blue to green and red with increase of UV irradiation to the cholesteric cells. To prevent the mixing of R, G, B reflective sub-pixel liquid crystals, separation walls were formed using negative photo resister in boundary area between sub-pixels. Through the optimization of the material concentrations and UV irradiation condition, vivid R, G, B colors were achieved.

  • Digital radiographic systems based on solid-state detectors, commonly referred to as flat-panel detectors, are gaining popularity in clinical practice. Large area, flat panel solid state detectors are being investigated for digital radiography. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the active matrix flat panel digital x-ray detectors in terms of their modulation transfer function (MTF), noise power spectrum (NPS), and detective quantum efficiency (DQE). In this paper, development and evaluation of a selenium-based flat-panel digital x-ray detector are described. The prototype detector has a pixel pitch of $139\;{\mu}m$ and a total active imaging area of $14{\times}8.5\;inch^2$, giving a total 3.9 million pixels. This detector include a x-ray imaging layer of amorphous selenium as a photoconductor which is evaporated in vacuum state on a TFT flat panel, to make signals in proportion to incident x-ray. The film thickness was about $500\;{\mu}m$. To evaluate the imaging performance of the digital radiography(DR) system developed in our group, sensitivity, linearity, the modulation transfer function(MTF), noise power spectrum (NPS) and detective quantum efficiency(DQE) of detector was measured. The measured sensitivity was $4.16{\times}10^6\;ehp/pixel{\cdot}mR$ at the bias field of $10\;V/{\mu}m$ : The beam condition was 41.9\;KeV. Measured MTF at 2.5\;lp/mm was 52%, and the DQE at 1.5\;lp/mm was 75%. And the excellent linearity was showed where the coefficient of determination ($r^2$) is 0.9693.

  • Thermal imaging is mainly used in military equipment required for night observation. In particular, technologies of uncooled thermal imaging detectors are being developed as applied to low-cost night observation system. Many system integrators require different specifications of the uncooled thermal imaging camera but their development time is short. In this approach, EOSYSTEM has developed a small size, TEC-less uncooled thermal imaging camera module with $32{\times}32mm$ size and low power consumption. Both domestic detector and import detector are applied to the EOSYSTEM's thermal imaging camera module. The camera module contains efficient infrared image processing algorithms including : Temperature compensation non-uniformity correction, Bad/Dead pixel replacement, Column noise removal, Contrast/Edge enhancement algorithms providing stable and low residual non-uniformity infrared image.

  • A holographic display system with a 22-inch LCD panel is developed to provide a wide viewing angle and large holographic 3D image. It is realized by steering a narrow viewing window resulting from a very large pixel pitch compared to the wave length of the laser light. Point light sources and a lens array make it possible to arbitrarily control the position of the viewing window for a moving observer. The holographic display provides both eyes of the observer with a holographic 3D image using two vertically placed LCD panels and a beam splitter to support the holographic stereogram.

  • Fine pitch microprobe arrays are microneedle-like probes for inspecting the pixel of LCD panel. They are usually made of multilayers of metallic, nonmetallic, or combination of the two. In this study, the microprobe arrays were fabricated using the process applied for MEMS fabrication technology and they consist of BeCu, BeNi, or Si. Their contacting probing force and deflection were measured using the laser equipment. The design requirement are 5gf of a minimum contact force and $150{\mu}m$ of a maximum deflection. A lot of microprobe shape are possible satisfying the requirement. A double cantilever-type microprobe having needles on both ends were applied for this study. Several candidate were chosen using the topology and shape optimization technique subjected to the design requirements. Finite element results and experimental results were compared and both gave good correlation.

  • The MTF(modulation transfer function) measuring system with a linear CCD(charge coupled-device) was constructed to cvaluate a color CRT(catode ray tube). The measured MTF values were corrected by considering the spectral response and the pixel sizes of CCD. The effects of a spot size, video bandwidth, pitch of shadow mask holes, display luminance, and ambient illumination on image quality were studied. The uniformity of resolution and the contrast Ioss by ambient light of the color CRT monitor were measured, and the results were analyzed by MTFA(modulation threshold area).

  • High-luminance CNT-FED character-displays using simple line-rib-structure was performed. One display-panel had $48{\times}480$-dots and the sub-pixel pitch was 1mm. Another panel had $32{\times}256$-color-pixels, and the subpixel size was $0.6mm{\times}1.8mm$. The power consumption was less than 10W at character-displaying module. It should be useful for public display even under emergent no-power condition.

  • Optimization of the luminance, luminous efficiency, and address voltage margin characteristics has been made on the delta color array PDP with various hexagonal shape subpixels. The optimal subpixel and electrode designs are obtained for the 42-inch high-definition PDP ($1,366{\times}768$) with the fine pixel pitch less than 0.7 mm. The hexagonal delta array structure shows more improved characteristics than that of the normal delta array structure with rectangular shape subpixels.
