  • Sapwood samples of pitch pine were treated with disodium octaborate alone by dip-diffusion, or in combination with water-repellent preservative(WRP) and methyl metacrylate(MMA). Treated samples were subjected to an accelerated leaching test for determining the improvement of leaching resistance and to soft rot and mold tests for evaluating the increase in bioefficacy, due to the addition of WRP and MMA applied as a second treatment. The addition of WRP and MMA retarded leaching of boron to some extent from treated samples and this retardation can be explained by improved water repellency of WRP and MMA treated samples. Borate /WRP and borate /MMA systems will not qualify borate treated wood for ground and fresh water contact use but may improve performance of borate treated wood in above-ground applications not subjected to continuous wetting conditions. Bioefficacy against soft rot fungi and mold fungi was improved by a second treatment with WRP. However, improvement in the performance of borate /MMA systems was not observed. Considering improvement in both resistance of leaching and bioefficacy against micro fungi by the treatment of WRP and MMA, simultaneously, the dual treatment of borate treated wood by MMA containing co-biocides might be believed as an ideal treatment system.

  • Volume increment and estimation of future growth of pitch pine stand at age of 16 were analyzed based on the stand table method. The diameter growth survey was made by the Meyer's Increment Borer method which was based on the volume formular made on the single tree volume. The formular is V=0.000058D $^{1.6}{\times}H^{1.1}$ This survey was made based on the 95% reliability surveyed on the 339 trees in the 0.33ha of sample plot espicially set up. (1) Linear regression over annual diameter growth for the diameter is as follows; y=0.1618+0.0298x (2) Ninety percent of the total trees, in the diameter distribution of 2cm round off, each increased one step in diameter. (3) Stand volume increment percentage shows 16%. (4) The increment of stand volume for 5 years shows 46% of increment rate.

  • This survey was estimated under the ratio estimate such as single class method, simple random sampling method, compound ratio sampling method, separate ratio sampling method and average tree sampling method artificial forest pitch pine volume. The following results were realized by the ratio estimates. At the above table simple random sampling method and compound ratio sampling method are the only ones which is included the actual stand volume in the ratio estimatedstand volume. It is thought that the sampling was in a such good result was because of stand structual stands were simple forest. The most simple measurement and calcuation on the stand volume estimates, in order, would be (1) single class method, (2) simple random sampling method (3) average tree method (4) separate ratio sampling method and compound ratio sampling method, and at the planted evenaged forest the method has realized the best results in obtaining good accuracy and the measure stand volume with least time, expenses and labor in considerably.

  • This study evaluated the potential of coffee waste (CW) and used frying oil (UFO) as an additive in the production of pitch pine (PIP) and Mongolian oak (MOK) pellets. Ash contents obtained from CW and UFO were 0.5% and <0.1%, respectively. The calorific values of UFO (31.4 MJ/kg) and CW (26.3 MJ/kg) are higher than PIP (20.6 MJ/kg) and MOK (19.1 MJ/kg). For pellets fabricated using a pilot-scale flat-die pellet mill, regardless of fabricating conditions, moisture content (MC) and bulk density of PIP and MOK pellets satisfied the A1 wood pellet standard for residential and small-scale commercial uses, as designated by the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFOS) of the Republic of Korea. When CW was used as an additive, durability of PIP pellets made with 12%-MC sawdust and MOK pellets increased. The optimal conditions for producing PIP and MOK pellets could be by adding 20 mesh CW as an additive and the using of 12%-MC sawdust. However, durability of PIP pellets and ash content MOK pellets did not satisfy the A1 wood pellet standard of NIFOS. Thus, further research is needed to improve the properties of wood pellets with additives.

  • The cultured stain fungus isolated firstly from discolored wood of Pinus rigida was inoculated on wood blocks to investigate the invading pathway of the fungus. The inoculated fungus rapidly colonized in the ray parenchyma and moved radially along them. In process of time the fungus penetrated tracheids where it started to move into vertical direction. After 90 days the fungus colonized all over the wood tissue, therefore some cell lumens were filled with full of hyphae. In addition methanol extracts did not affect the invading pathway of the stain fungus.

  • In 2001, we conducted a study to assess the effects of differential arrival times and nest-site selection on reproductive performance in a mixed-species heronry consisting of six species in Taeseong-ri, Chungbuk, Korea. We recorded the arrival dates, nest heights, clutch sizes, and brood sizes after 15-20 days of the age of the birds' chicks. The grey herons and cattle egrets arrived first and last, respectively, on the colony site. In the homogenous vegetation structure of the breeding site, the pitch pine trees (Pinus rigida) were mainly used for building nests on 48 of the 50 pine trees (96%). The breeding species vertically stratifies the nest sites according to their body size, except for the cattle egrets and black-crowned night herons that nested at sites higher than those predicted from their body size. The mean nest success rates of the six species under study were positively correlated with the mean nest heights. Our findings suggest that aggressive interspecific interactions among neighbors influence nest-site selection to enhance breeding success.

  • 24mm-thick specimens from three species of plantation-grown softwood were press dried under two platen pressures of 1.75kgf/$cm^2$ and 3.50kgf/$cm^2$ to obtain drying information regarding to drying rate, thickness shrinkage and drying defects. The influence of platen pressure on drying fare in range of moisture content (30 to 10 percent) increased for pitch pine and larch, but reduced for korean white pine at higher pressure. Thickness shrinkage was increased at the higher pressure, and estimated thickness shrinkage at final MC of 10 percent became unrealistically greater for specimens containing higher final moisture content under the great influence of compressive strain. The effects of pressure on the amount of surface checks and honeycombing were different from species used. These species should have applied lower temperature than 177$^{\circ}C$ in this study to reduce surface checks and honeycombing.

  • Flowering time of Pinus rigida Mill and Pinus taeda L, in an $F_1$-hybrid seed orchard was investigated for five years from 1971 through 1975. The two tree species flowered during late April to early May at the observation site, Flowering patterns of the two species of different sex of the same species changed yearly during the five observation years. Floral development of the two species appeared to depend largely on temperature factor during the period of the initiation of floral organs up to flowering provided that other environmental factors are normal. Six-days difference in flowing time between female inflorescence of pitch (flower later) and male inflorescence of loblolly (flower earlier) pines effectively isolated the two species reproductively on population levels. Not all of selected trees of the two species for their synchronized flowering appeared to be useful as parental trees for the establishment of $F_1$-hybrid seed orchards. With the result from this investigation the author suggested to use a modified simple recurrent selection method for pitch-loblolly hybrid pine breeding.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the changed vegetational community structure according to vegetational succession in Chiaksan National Park of Korea by applying ordination and classification method of floristic composition along with the actual vegetation by correlation. As for the ratio of actual vegetation, Mongolian oak forest(33.1%) was the highest, followed by mixed forest(16.2%), Japanese larch forest(15.6%), deciduous broad-leaved forest(14.7%), red pine forest(11.1%), Korean pine forest(2.3%) and Pitch pine forest(0.1%), respectively. The vegetation was classified into Acer pseudosieboidianum-Quercus mongolica community, Cornus controversa-Carpinus cordata community, Quercus sonata community, Pinus densiflora community and afforestation. The Acer pseudosieboldianum-Quercus mongolica community-a subordinately ranked community-was divided into Carpinus laxiflora-Sassa borealis community, Fraxinus rhynchophylla community and Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa-Carex siderosticta community. The results of community classification using by ordination and classification method of floristic composition were similar to each other. The vegetational succession, with the combination of Quercus mongolica, Acer pseudosieboldianum and Rhododendron schlippenbachii, was predicted to form a climax forest from above the hillside.
